I used to read the NYFA classifieds back in 2015-18 and almost every fellowship, grant, even simple 9-5 jobs would require you're not white, and God-forbid a white male. This was the epoch of Slave Play at NY Theatre Workshop, you just couldn't get away from pure identity politics at the biggest off-broadway shows and companies. It was a big reason I left NYC and the theatre scene. I just found your channel Clifton and I your perspective is really interesting and a breath of fresh air, and congratulations on the upcoming one man show!

The private conversations and the public conversations around this are totally different. Half of the people who tell you in public that the discrimination doesn’t exist will privately tell you about times they were explicitly discriminated against.

Since the events of 2020, around 6% of white-collar hires have been white men, which represent approximately 60% of the hiring pool. It's plenty obvious.

Clifton I just must say, you are a hero for not bowing to the covid mafia, even though it cost you your job. I am glad to see you turn it around and it warms my heart that you got the funding (and above) to do the Thomas Sowell solo play. While I am normally not that into theater, I am looking forward to that one.

I am so proud of you Kevin. This is such a great, honest and open convo. Jobs and opportunities should be based on merit and this is coming from someone who is BIPOC! And yes, we do see this is wrong. We don't speak out and are afraid of being cancelled...we don't want to lose work. I am one of those people. Thank you for putting this out into the world. Discrimination is defined in the dictionary as "the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of ethnicity, age, sex, or disability."

Becoming more and more apparent that those pretty words were a slogan meant to sell something else.. A system for stirring up racial resentment, possibly by accident or possibly on purpose, but regardless of intent, some people in power noticed that it became a useful wedge for campaigning. And now it is a way of converting racial animus into power, to the detriment of both white and black people everywhere. I think that's the takeaway: both of us lose with this dynamic, as our hidden resentments and insecurities are commodified as political fuel.

The reliance upon federal/state grants has allowed these ideologues to function without understanding a basic P&L. They have never understood money, or where it comes from. It's hitting theatre hard because of the small ecosystem.

Federal grants have always been an inroad for the expansion of federal power and spreading their system of thought; tempting as they might be, they are certainly not a vehicle for pure charity.

I started gettong my BFA in musical theater in 2020 and now that i'm about to graduate i'm not even planning on being an actor anymore because of how many people in the industry have told me I will straight up not get casted because i'm a "cisgendered white male". That pissed me off so much that I couldn't handle it anymore. acting should be about talent and skill, not identity. it's ok to have a character that is specifically black or specifically aisian etc. but when a role is ambiguous the fact that some people take skin color into account now is so stupid. I saw Jordan Fisher when he played Evan Hansen on Broadway and all the headlines was "Jordan fisher becomes first african american Evan Hansen" instead of focusing on his clear talent. Edit: Whenever I go into auditions now I tend to ham up my more....... flamboyant side to try and get past the whole "straight white man" image.

Bravery from 2 of my favorite men in theatre! I live in Missouri and have been to Broadway to see shows on 6 trips from 1987-2008. I’ll never go back to what a cesspool it has become. Looking forward to seeing and hearing about new works appearing elsewhere. Sadly even /Regional theatre is infected by this mind virus. Time for like minded people like us to carve our own niche, create theatre and companies. Again, I cannot say enough about my admiration for the 2 of you.

Same here in Aus. Quotas for crew, performers, the orchestra and even dressers (!!!). 3 jobs now that I've been offered and had retracted because the final make-up was deemed "too white" so someone/people had to be let go and replaced by non-white people. And those are just the jobs I've been told about directly. It's been 20+ years of my life but there's no place for me anymore. I'm also tired of being afraid and I want my voice back. Carmel Dean is an Aussie and I'm disappointed to hear about her role in this.

I wish, in a sense, this was confined to the theater; unfortunately it's a multi front engagement; my fear is that, unless something gives, we may be headed for some kind of civil breakdown, people are at their wits end, and I have a bad feeling it's all out of control. I hope and pray I'm wrong!
