How do you remove the box when the tree is to big to lift over the top, wouldn't it be better to have the box beside the tree rather than over it?

I was wondering the same. I would propose to make it C or U shaped instead of O shaped.The benefit of having it (partly) around the tree is that it also creates a cooling effect. If the shape is U or C we can also remove the boxx sideways instead of up so that we don't damage the tree when removing the boxx.

Is there an update on how this turned out? Was it a success? Has it help desertification or was it a project which has been forgotten?

Since plastic is corroding over time, it would be a good alternative to make the boxes out of ceramic. For grape plants, where the boxes stay in the ground for about 20 years, it would be worth the extra costs.

How well do the trees survive after they outgrow the boxes? Can they survive independently above the tree line?

Yes, because they have been grown strong and big root system.

The make a desert bloom is to add water. Here in the United State of Nevada,. a desert State, we have a species of Beaver, an aquatic mammal that build dams. Nevada's Beavers build dams in streams that had regularly dried up in the dry season and transforms the area into a desert oasis with trees and sweet water flowing year round. Maybe our Beavers can transform the dried up streams in China, Mongolia, and the Sahara to help reverse desertification. Beaver ponds sustain fish, wildlife, and can provide irrigation water. and water for livestock.

It is not enough to simply add water because it rapidly runs off bare land. It is common in desert areas for there to be rainy periods that then lead to huge rushing rivers that strip away the land and the water quickly disappears again. Planting trees and helping them to get started forms a root network that holds soil in place and stops erosion. Beavers can't survive in a desert with no trees to feed them, and they would rapidly devastate these afforestation projects before the trees are large enough to be self-sustaining.

@@DMahalko You are absolutely correct. The absence of grasses and trees, that hold water to the land, causes horrible flash floods. I know them well from living in a desert for 40 years.. The beavers build dams up and down the streams and this creates oasis' with trees, grasses and aquatic plants that slows water flow and lessens the chances of destructive flash flooding. Men and women are inventive and this fine quality will create numerous remedies for desertification. Nevada is encouraging the native beaver population to grow and work their magic.

How often do you have to refill the waterboxx with water in such an Environment?

Good question! Sometimes you have to refill the Waterboxx 1 or 2 times, but 1 day of rain can refill the box completely. Also, it depends on how old your tree or plant is. When the box is empty after 9 months, you probably don't need to refill the box and the tree can already survive on its own. The Waterboxx plant cocoon will than provide a micro climate to the plant (see: www.groasis.com/en/technology/waterboxx-micro-climate-effects)!

Scattering truck load of grass seeds around the trees in the waterboxxes would also be beneficial. What we must remember is that woods and forests are not made of just trees, but grasses, weeds, plants, scrub, all of which form the bio-substrata that supports trees and larger bush. Scattering grass and weed seeds around the targetted area, and if possible sprinkling them at least once in a while with water will allow the tougher weeds, grasses and plants to take hold. Sometimes just the moisture from dew will help such biology to thrive. Once the bare ground is beginning to be covered with the ''lesser'' plant life, trees will take root more successfully. we must understand that trees are living organisms which like company. They associate with other green vegetation. Conifers in bare ''waterboxxes'' look desolate and rather unwilling to stay alive. The bare and desolate ground that you see here on the hill side should be sprayed with animal manure, grass seeds etc., before trees are planted. And conifers do not create as much mulch and leaf matter as broad-leaved trees do. If there were giant trucks to carry away mined soil, then those who did this, should be taxed to bring back the trucks with cattle/horse manure to spray the devastated grounds. I hope Pieter Hoff and others will take note of my suggestions. along with promoting waterboxxes, those involved with reforestation schemes should first look at how to bring smaller vegetation back along with tree planting that must take second place afterwards. Once vegetation is established, it will automatically bring moisture and living organisms back into the soil, and this will prepare the ground for reforestation. All the best.

Trees first and the rest follows naturally. If you spread seeds on slate or bare rock.. Nothing will grow. What theyre doing os correct. Trees first. It fixes the water retention in the soil. Which fixes the water table. Encourages other growth. Remember thay evolutionarily speaking.. Trees came first. Grass came last

Hi! How would you treat the problem, the poor soil? We are very interested to hear your solution! When planting trees and shrubs, we are improving the soil (after a couple of years). It is not only for decoration!

Once a deciduous tree is able to become established, it automatically starts to form healthy soil by breaking down nutrients deep underground and then dropping leaves around itself. The leaves then build the soil so that other plants can grow around the tree.

You need to learn more about the tool of livestock on planned grazing, right now the only tool you are using is technology and that wont fix a biological problem.

@@Gustav4 I have sheep and tried to plant trees. I don't believe a second, that these boxes alone had helped my little project. Way too many trees didn't survive. But I don't see what my animals could have done to help it either. I try to 'heal' my land with grazing since several years now. I don't see much change - at least none, that would support the growth of trees - ?? In my area soils arent't deep. Specialists say, that tillage/ preparation of the soil is (maybe not all, but) critical: the roots need to be able to go where they want to go, and if they can't, they just won't and won't ever. The reported glorious changes through grazing practices are not for everyone and everywhere. Saying that animals will do the trick, is a violation of the one rule of 'holistic mangement' I remember: everything is allowed (although not desirable).

@@TheCommono Where are you from Livestock is just recycling the plant material that has grown through the year(s) biologically, which is necessary to improve soil. The thing is, this problem is beyond your little plot of land, degraded soil in entire regions has changed the weather, so it is not only poor soil with broken ecosystem functions millions of hectares, the weather has been effected as well.
