Anti Communist Soldiers Fled To This Village In Thailand

My first visit to Ban Rak Thai was way too short and all I got from that first visit was that it was a Yunnanese Chinese Village thats close to the Thai/Myanmar Border. It wasn't until I went home and did proper research (way to go Forrest) that the origin story of this village was actually from fleeing Kuomintang/Nationalist Chinese forces that took refuge here from the Chinese Communist during and after the Chinese Civil War.
I came back here for the second time to explore this story...

My Father was a Korean War veteran and Chinese POW. He unconditionally disliked ( hated ) " Hippies " During the Late 60's South Florida had a great Hippie invasion, Nixon was the US President. It became a running joke. My little Brother who was 14 years younger than me ( must of been like 3 years old ) came up with a Good one. One of sisters would scream " Oooo a Hippie !" Little Brother would then say " Squash'em like a Roach" or " Squash'em like a Bug!" To this day he sports a Crew cut ( like Dad had ) & hates All Hippies. Your intensity reminds me of my Little Bro.

I walked around the Golden Triangle in January 1976. I met Kuomintang soldiers and also groups of irregular soldiers carrying guns and travelling with their girlfriends and pet dogs. As I do not speak Chinese, Thai or the Hill Tribe dialects, I did not understand the history of these groups.. The Hill Tribes and the Kuomintang soldiers moved between Burma and Thailand. The only transport in the area was by foot or pack horses. Also in January 1976, I visited Thamassat University in Bangkok. There I met left wing students selling communist literature. In October of that year, there was a coup. Many of these left wing students joined the Thai Communist Party and fought the Thai Army near the Lao border. The Thai Communist Party was not defeated by the Thai Army, but by internal divisions. Some supported Beijing and wanted to speak only Chinese. Others wanted to speak only Thai and retain the Thai monarchy. The communist governments of Laos and Vietnam supported Moscow after 1978. King Rama 9 granted an amnesty to members of the Thai Communist Party and the party dissolved.

What's wrong with hippies? I don't get it. They are living their lives without hurting anyone. I have met a lot of nice hippies who prayed for my daughter when she was dying from serious illness. Do not judge anyone. Someone could judge you for thousands of things. I don't drink and smoke weeds but I don't judge people who do. I have friends who judge others who drink. I have friends who judge others for smoking cigarettes. I have friends who judge people for making KZread videos for living. Someone will judge you for skin color, nationality, religion, weight, age and any small insignificant things.. it is not good idea to start off your video with negative attitude towards a group of people who are here in this world for reason. Every single thing has meaningful reason to be here. Don't get me wrong I am nowhere near being hippie. I got my work and family.

You seem to have a dislike for various types of people old expats over a certain age, Backpackers and now Hippies. By calling all hippies as being dirty and smelly seems very narrow minded! Being a Hippie isn't about how you dress and look, It's a state of mind. I know many Hippies that wear 3 piece suits and sit on board rooms! As for your comment "How to find ones self besides doing drugs there are many ways such as studying various religions, self help books and reading about psychology! I thought the idea about travelling was to make people more broad mined?? Sure seems it hasn't worked for you! You seem to have some very REDNECK POINT OF VIEWS !!! As for the 3 groups of people mentioned here that you dislike they helped open this country up before mainstream tourism arrived in Thailand and have helped making travel here for the likes of people like you and so called mainstream tourist to come here and get around easy!
