Thank you for continuing to make educational videos. So many creators have migrated to "chatty plant chores" or "plant tours" and omit talking about the basics on how the specific plants grow - the details of how you've grown them with success (or not). I come here to learn, and you always provide that. 👍👍

I love your honesty about falling out of love with anthuriums due to the artificial hype in the community. Totally relate to that bad taste it left behind for a while. But I'm glad you've falling in love with them again and I loved seeing your collection and learning about how you grow them ☺

Refreshing take on the anthurium name craze! Honestly i hate having to google trying to figure out the two parent plants, always love sellers who just name the hybrids mother x father instead of the fancy schmancy names

You always have such perfect timing. Another sleepless night in the states, and I have 2 anthuriums on their way. Perfect video!! Also I'm just really getting into them. I've been growing plants for 3 years but have been hesitant in the past due to pricing, but now, they're more modest and I'm slowing introducing more to my collection. Your anthuriums are just gorgeous. Love and appreciate any and all information, tips, and / or tricks you have for us. Til next time!😉

Thanks for putting your hydrometer averages on here. Your numbers in your bedroom are what I have in my grow cabinets! So that makes it really hard for plants that outgrow the cabinet. In winter my ambient humidity is @30% and temps between 65 and 70 F. Although I'm finding that certain anthuriums are ok with lower humidity once they acclimate.

Anthuriums and thunderstorms! What a combination!!! 💚

Ahhh, my two favourite things in one video - Anthuriums and thunderstorms! I don't have an issue with people naming their hybrids as long as it's done with integrity. One of our local breeders does it, but they are super transparent about what the parent plants are (they put a photo of each on the website and next to the seedling trays at market) and they don't just do it for any common cross. They have parent plants that are really rare in New Zealand because of our strict import laws, and their hybrids are therefore quite unique. They don't use the fancy names to bump up their prices either - the price relates to the rarity of the parents. They also name their hybrids in instances where their parent plants aren't pure, so they can't use the usual name for that cross. For example, while a dress x papi is often called a Dark Phoenix, their dress and papi are both hybrids, so they couldn't legitimately call the babies Dark Phoenix - they named them Velvet Eclipse instead. I like that because I know any plant called Velvet Eclipse in New Zealand comes from that breeder and those specific parent plants. I have one and it looks like it's going to grow up to look like a Dark Phoenix red veins - olive leaves and bright pink veins that don't fade down to white 😍

I have a few strappy, birds nest, big round and i love them all but i feel like im good and done. The variety and options in my alocasias and philodendrons keep my interests more

I can't wait for my Anthuriums to get big like that. The velvet leaf ones are nice but I also have a thing for the strap leaf varieties.

Such a true point on anthurium hybrids. Because it’s so easy to breed anthuriums, literally any body can do it, there is a tendency for breeders/growers to cash in on the hype of ‘rare’ plants and sell any random cross that looks slightly different for a crazy amount. And I honestly don’t understand the hype of having a cross from a certain grower. If they say they like dark plants then everyone all of a sudden everyone likes dark plants, then it’s flat sinus, then ruffly edges etc etc. anyway I love crazy rubbish!😂

I think there are just two general camps for Anthurium, one for the everyday plant collector and one for the rare Anthurium collector/hybridizer. Without understanding the goals and motivations of the other group, it's easy to write them off and see them as silly. People should enjoy anthurium, and plants in general, according to their taste. Collect what you think is pretty or worthwhile. Not caring about specific species or their rarity and not chasing the "unicorn" plants is a perfectly valid way of doing the hobby. However there is a group of people that value the lineage of a plant, where it came from and it's specific traits. The original mother plants were the ones first taken from the wild. This group will often obsess over subtle traits that a more casual hobbyist would miss. They will create environments for the plants to thrive and breed. Also, breeding is more difficult than you think. Breeders have to be mindful of the maturity of the plant and it's overall health when breeding. Creating berries is very taxing for the plant, so a plant can drop all of its leaves to create the berries if it's not for enough for the job. This turns the plant into a rehab. You also only get a certain yield of good seedlings that will grow to maturity without problems. Many of the KZreadrs that show how "easy" it is to get 200 seedlings probably are not culling out weak plants. They later go on to sell those weak seedlings and the buyer does not have a great growing experience. Growers that have good reputations so this and are praised often for selling strong plants that flourish after being bought. This is just barely scratching the surface of how deep you can go with knowledge and experience in Anthurium. Again it doesn't invalidate the other way of collecting or vice versa. Certain plants command certain price tags either due to lineage or logistical things like difficulty to breed or, as is the case for Australian anthurium, difficulty to procure due to things like import and export laws.

And it is true that there is a problem with hybridizers making up random names for their hybrids and marketing is as this special thing without it being officially recognized or documented. It definitely can be a confusing barrier to entry for anthurium collecting.

That's a good idea. Plant choice according to one's own environment is key. I feel Jan is very good at this.

I think it's cool to be able to grow tropical plants from seeds you pollinated inside your house. I grow lots of vegetables from seed for my outside summer garden, but never thought it possible for tropicals. (I have grown cannas and callas from seed, though, just to experiment). It's amazing how different the leaf sizes can be of the same plant.

Frame. of this collection😂 Incidentally my Veitchii is slow to size up as well 🤷🏻‍♀️ Also, to your point- as someone who loves anthurium for aesthetics & the love and challenge of plant care, I'm happy that tissue culture ls making some of these plants more accessible for more reasonable prices 😊

I finally got a Luxurians 2-3 months ago and I loooove it! I also have a lux hybrid. There are some hybrids out there that are beautiful but they are extremely expensive and I’d rather not. I don’t need to have a super ultra rare Anthurium. I’d be so broke! I love your crazy rubbish hybrid. They are all beautiful so I like to pick and choose what I add to my collection. I just recently jumped down the Hoya rabbit hole. We have been getting a lot of rain in the U.S. (Texas) so I put out my dollar store buckets to catch rain water…my plants love it! Would love to see any and all other videos…Monstera, Philodendron….whatever you decide to do I will definitely watch!

I’m an anthurium collector and have some expensive ones… and I have to say u are soooo right with what you said! Anthurium community are soo toxic even here in germany… I used to spend so much money, which I regret sometimes. I now only buy anthuriums I really really want and not because of a name. It’s because I think they’re pretty. To everyone who starts with anthurium I would recommend everything as u said. Start with cheaper ones, hybrids, it could get pricey too fast🫶🏼 good video as always!!

liked both the anthuriums and the storm 🙂 1) i had a question: given your liking for giant leaves, have you ever grown philodendron giganteum ? i may have missed a discussion about this. 2) Also, something interesting happened to me today. About 4 months ago I put my monstera deliciosa on a fern bark totem (New Zealand fern from Besgrow). Today i moved it to a moss pole, believing that roots would grow in the moss pole but would not grow in the fern totem. To my surprise, the monstera roots had penetrated the fern totem ! The roots were not as developed as they would have been in a moss pole, but i was interested to see they had grown into the totem at all. To remove the totem would have torn roots. I decided to leave the totem in and provide the new moss pole as well. I'm not sure if that will hurt or help the plant ... got to experiment, though, right? Have you seen this kind of thing ?

I think i want more now😂 but since you are talking about your collection maybe you can do a video on plants you want but don’t have? 🤷🏻‍♀️ also do you have or would you ever have a philodendron heart leaf? The variegated version is very nice and i have seen them get very big on moss poles maybe you can try that next?? 😁 also how do you feel about syngoniums?? I think they are easy plants and can look good on poles👍

OK… so I feel like Neo in the matrix when gets plugged in to download information. That was a wild ride and I learned why my ONE, (yes, one) anthurium is a sad little under-sized orphan. Thank you, SPG+B (Sydneyplantguyplusbrad) for another great video. I actually sometimes think, “Yeah, I’m just going to have this video in the background kinda while I brush my teeth and water my plants.” Nope. I always end up rewinding and rewatching. You’re GOOD, man. What do we want to see next? Ummm. Please be interested in anything I’m interested in and teach me how to do it in your clear and inspired fashion. Dog training? Oil painting? Drawing? Baking? OK… other plants? Aren’t you gearing up for a Hoya collection, or maybe some terrarium building?

They're all so beautiful!!! I really want a Queen anthurium! 😮 I got my 2 first ones last weekend and I'm totally in love! I hot a Magnificum and a Villenaorum. I choose them only beaucoup they were looking beautiful! 😅 I'm gonna put a layer of moss on them, maybe it can be good for them in my environment 😊

Another fantastic video. But where is Brad? I have a crystallinium it is growing very well since i bought it as a tiny plant. It has made offsets and there are now 4 plants growing intertwined together the plant is very bushy with lots of leaves and the leave are getting bigger but they are still much smaller that other crystals that i have seen. I think my care is good and i feed it. Is it because there are 4 plants growing together that the leaves are not sizing up? I've had her for 3 years. She is one of my absolute favourite plants. Also yes more videos talking about you different plant families. Ooh and also ideas about plant arrangements would be cool.😊

He’s scared of thunder so was hiding :P most likely your plants are not sizing up further because they compete for light, nutrients & space :)

Coincidentally I just watched your old anthurium spotlight last night to solidify best care practices as well as get an idea of what my new baby Forgetii might look like full grown. Early on in my plant journey I killed a beautiful Black Love anthurium and swore off ever trying again, until I found success with other aroids using your techniques. I can't thank you enough for the confidence I've gained learning from you Jan.😻 I also wondered what had become of your variegated magnificum x, as these are apparently the next wave in "rare" plants out of Indonesia 😹 As for the "rare plant unmixed DNA" snobs, this behavior only encourages plant poaching that can lead to endangering or completely eradicating to extinction. So hybridizing and TC are the most sustainable path for collectors to ensure biodiversity in my humble opinion. As for what's next? Wondering if you might experiment with Keiki paste on aroids? Or have you thought about trying kokedama or growing anthurium on lava rock or any of the other interesting ways to display plants? Could be fun to try with some of your crazy rubbish? Do you have room now to try a small pond and get that Mojito colocasia? ( Mines still living it's best life in semi hydro) Basically it's always a blast to see any of your "proof in the pudding" processes. Thoroughly enjoy following you on your plant filled journey.😻

I get them from Bunnings which doesn’t exist in the US so of no help here, sorry 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s a liquid nutrient I use when watering, not as a foliar spray :)
