I remember a film called Revolution with Al Pacino in it. Laden with a cast with calibre and a huge budget. I was an usherete at the time. First day, performances would begin with a full auditorium. But, as the weighty film played, people began to walk out. As each performance ended we would have to wake up some of the remaining members of the audience and inform them that the film had ended. As word of mouth got round the audience numbers got less and less each time. We still had to do the wake up at the end because of those who wouldn't or couldn't believe that something that sounded so right theoretically could turn out so wrong. No internet in those days. Not sure if that's a joke or not. But in case it isn't. The point is that the after doing super hero films and becoming a success. Fans only see the actor as one character. This can hurt you future films as people can't actually see you playing any role outside of your Most famous one. If you star in a comedy series it will be hard to see you in an action movie convincingly. If you are a super hero. Ppl are just gonna think it's weird to see this super hero in a drama film. Also as an actor it's gonna b annoying since you won't be recognized as you but only as the guy who played said super hero if you can get roles that make you similarly popular or half as popular. It's the reason that Leonard Di Caprio refuses to take super hero roles because he doesn't want to be type casted.

Separating a character from the actor is not a modern problem this happens all the time whenever a franchise becomes popular. No not necessarily. People remember an actor for their great performances. It's because they do so well as these different characters that they are known and remembered. No actor sticks out in the MCU.

@@dexxfilm I've heard this argument before and to an extent I can agree but not entirely. It's so easy to just lump everyone together when you try to dissuade someone from watching marvel movies (iron man, Dr. strange, Rocket Racoon: wise-cracking genius closed off to most others. Star Lord, ant man: criminal degenerate trying to do better. Gomorrah, Black Widow: sexy assassin chick with troubled past. Groot, hulk: the muscle of a few words. Like you genuinely have to try and make these heroes sound generic when if you really watch it, they all couldn't be more different in retrospective. The best example is the contrast from avengers (first movie) and endgame, where tony and Steve are coming at each other, thinking they have everything all figured out. Tony pegged Steve as a man out of time with nothing special to really offer, cause everything special about him came out of a bottle, when in reality his leadership skills, influence and pure hearted nature was so infectious and inspirational to so many other members, new and old. . . For crying out loud, he was ORIGINALLY the only human worthy of mjolnr (seeing the only other human is dead now, he technically still is) and lead the entire endgame war against Thanos, which ended up winning. Now on the opposite, Steve pegged Tony as a drunken degenerate who hides behind a suit of armor and wouldn't put his life on the line to save anyone but himself. Mind you Tony's original idea was to put a suit of armor around the world so everyone can be protected from the dangers unseen, but when that failed (ultron) he pushed to instead have a suit around the people closest to him, who needed it (pepper, rhodey, Peter, even bruce got to use the hulk buster suit when hulk refused to come out and fight) and in the end of all of it, he was the one that grabbed all the infinity Stones and sacrificed himself to save the entire world from Thanos, ending the war once and for all. Now I know, you most likely seen the movies and didn't like it, but the last thing (at least before phase 4 to an extent) that I would call these heroes are generic, especially with character I never touched upon, like ant man being low key a family guy that always ends up being mixed up on the wrong side of the law, when he's supposed to be a hero. starlord: a earth native that seems just as alien as any thing out of earth, yet manages somehow to sleep with any and every creature resembling a female. Wanda: a girl who just wanted to be normal, a wife, a mother, but is cursed to not ever have that because of the power she holds. Even going back to captain America and the fact that he's a Grandpa in a young man's body and it shows in basically every scene he is in, outside of "the first avenger" movie.

However, when watching the Jumanji reboots, it just feels like I'm watching Kevin Hart and the Rock do the same thing they always do. It's nothing bad per say, just a nit pick I have. Marvel is just a stepping stone, I remember I think it was a period in like 2018-2019 that Marvel actors were popping up in every movie. If they weren't stars people wouldn't have been excited to see them, people wouldn't care, if they just cared about the superhero no one would have cared. Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel Jackson in Kong was hype on the internet, Chris Hemsworth in Men in black. Tom Holland in a few of the animated movies, Dolittle. If they aren't stars then why were people so excited to see them in these movies

Not only the makeup, his body structure, voice, accent and so on... unlike Robert Jr. who has a fixed persona. His most hit films have a Tony Stark vibe, Sherlock Holmes and etc. Sad to say, wide range of actresses and actors today are not that much devoted to their roles. People that are in their 30s and up still know these actors/actresses by name. Like Ryan Reynolds is still a star for all he's done. Tarantino is wrong. This is one area that Emilia Clark is very good in. When her roles have so much cosmetic enhancement, not only does her face become less recognisable but she can play more roles without her face being a distraction. So having actors play roles with different hair and makeup and costume definitely helps. Then there's the men who look different because of exercise and haircut (long vs short or beard, jacked vs skinny). I think it's better to go to the movies to watch your favourite character rather than your favourite actor, but it also leads to dissatisfaction when the actor's looks don't match up like Witcher's Yennifer. Actors may complain that they're stuck in a certain kind of role, but welcome to the blonde bombshell trap that has been a problem since the dawn of cinema! If they only get one big role and then lots of smaller roles then great! The pay gap in acting is ridiculous anyway so I see no problem with this. Get your 5 minutes of fame and then move along for the next person lol.

@@_shynanigans7859 I think the problem is that the message is now becoming so much more important than the entertainment that the entertainment is gone and the message is becoming harsh and forced. So, for example, I can say that I think the last Charlie's Angels is a terrible film with a bad script and mediocre acting and explain why I think so, but any of my criticism will be dismissed as "sexist" because it is a film about "strong female characters."
Separating a character from the actor is not a modern problem this happens all the time whenever a franchise becomes popular. For example Jaleel White from family matters had trouble finding other roles because everyone saw him as Steve Urkle. Also if the audience sees the character and not the actor it usually means the actor either did a good job portraying said character.

No not necessarily. People remember an actor for their great performances. It's because they do so well as these different characters that they are known and remembered.

Ive said this before on a different short, but I'm happy that we're getting back to this. I want to see my favorite characters on screen, not the a lister who plays them. When I watch a movie like the original Jumaji, Robin Williams plays Alan so well that I don't see Robin anymore, I see Alan. However, when watching the Jumanji reboots, it just feels like I'm watching Kevin Hart and the Rock do the same thing they always do. It's nothing bad per say, just a nit pick I have. Idk, as an actor i believe you should be able to portray your character to the best of your ability, and part of that is dropping your ego and being okay with being synonymous with your character.
I worked door security at a swanky cocktail event in New Orleans. Mackie showed up at VIP entrance, but lady with the list didn't recognize him and turned him away. I told her "that's falcon from the Avengers" and she had me chase him down and apologize / let him in. He was cool about it, but it's experiences like this that led Mackie to believe he isn't a star.

well, the reason why people say, “let’s watch X-Men movies” it’s because those characters have been around way longer. Both sides are right, though a lot of people nowadays cannot differentiate the actors from the character depicted on the big screen.

Tom Cruise is mainly a franchise man though. People don’t always see the next Tom Cruise film: it’s the next mission impossible. Most of his films are either franchise building or flops or both (The Mummy for example). Then the Rock could be an argument however I genuinely can’t think of many good films he’s been in, they’re all either ok to bad. He’s a charismatic guy but his films are kind of trash.
@christopherwilson868

The Rock cannot and will never compare to Leo or any other great actors. His acting is decent at best. Plus people go to see The Rock be The Rock which is exactly the opposite of what they're saying.
I feel like Dolittle is a bad example since it generally wasn't well received by anyone and is generally overshadowed by the Eddie Murphy & Kyla Pratt series of films. I went to see Men in Black International because I like the franchise but also because I like Chris Hemsworth & Tessa Thompson and I really enjoyed it. I liked Jonathan Majors from Lovecraft Country and I'm very excited for him as Kang in Marvel but also in Creed 3 & Devotion.
It’s always been that way to a degree. Before the RDJ Holmes movies, Holmes was the star, not necessarily the actor who played him. When they made the Batman and Superman movies before they were trying to compete with Marvel, Batman was the draw. Same with Bond, then Star Wars, Star Trek, Indiana Jones, etc. The MCU just expanded it.
It’s not the MCU’s fault, there’s just so much talent out there. It used to be that once you got cast in a movie that got big you were basically guaranteed more big opportunities. Now with so much coming out and with so many projects, you have to search hard for the good ones, as well as compete.

That is true for an extent. But if a movie is coming out with a big name actor, you would at least watch the trailer.
I am 100% OK with this. Now, instead of getting someone famous to play a role, they’re not suited, they’ll just find someone who could play the role and is suited and no one will bat an eye.

The problem is that Hollywood is looking at quantity and not quality. Used to be the same movies played for a whole season and we went to see them over and over. It was a big deal when a new movie came out
I actually like the fact that there isn’t “movie stars” anymore. Because I’m not personally a fan of big stars who are absolutely in EVERYTHING. Leo is definitely the only actor that feels like he’s just the character and not Leo
The issue is 1. As far as established characters go (super heroes, James Bond etc) there is built in affinity for the character so the actor is now forever associated with the character, instead of vice versa. 2. And why there are no more movie stars, is that there's so much you can consume, the opportunities to watch something new and be introduced to actors you've never seen before is infinitely greater than it was in the previous decades when you had a much a much smaller pool of movies and actors. Everyone would watch the same thing and become fans of the same actors.

Oh ya, these multi-millionaires really have it rough. Poor them.
The irony of saying Chris Evans isn't the reason to see movies -- only Capt America -- is that I remember Chris Evans playing a banana split.

You are not a dipshit that’s my role😂
Virgin Simu lu: Let me 🥩 ride disney Chad Anthony Mackie: "Ur Right."🗿
That’s an interesting perspective, hadn’t thought of it like that before, there is a point here.
All I know for me is that I have loved Chris Evans, RDJ, and Anthony Mackie in both the MCU and acting rolls outside.
It just sounds like they hate movie franchises , cuz tbh the MCU made and casted up coming stars themselves. Just cuz we love the characters doesn’t mean we forget about the actor those actors are huge stars now forever legendary
This has been happening since the 80s and star wars, the public would rather get behind a character and root for them. Cinema is not dead, franchises are just easier to make appealing.
Hollywood says they hate superhero films but they are really saying they hate disney.
There are cases like Christian Bale, he demonstrates exceptional acting and he was also batman... that's mostly because he can blend so well with his roles and hide his original persona making him unpredictable. But once in a while they do give brilliant performances which Hollywood later milks out for the rest of their lives.
Nowadays nobody will ever say " Let's go see the new X-Men movie."
Adam Sandler, will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, Dwane Johnson, chris Pratt, Jennifer Lawrence, mark walburg, Christian bale, Samuel L Jackson, Keanu reeves. These are all well known and loved actors who have played many characters. Pretty sure whoever said that was just a Leonardo decaprio fan girl.
I’m pretty sure Anthony Mackie was one of the first to talk about this topic
Idk but I watch any Andrew Garfield movie or Chris Evans movie just for them 😭
Tom cruise is the top tier for me. Damn the way he does his stunts, maverick was so good like bruh. Flying jets in real time with real maneuvers. Wild
For an actor like Daniel Kaluuya were he played Wakabe in Black Panther, I actually watched Nope and Get out not for him but for the director. (Jordan Peele) He is an amazing British actor and I can see him play other roles.
The fact that Forrest Gump couldn't be made today is the issue - it's the greenlight that's broken, not Thanos.
I gotta agree with Aniston, their just aren’t new huge blockbuster names coming up anymore…. Hollywood just sucks now, Maverick was a breath of fresh air I’ll tell you that
i think this is due to them being series films when you only have one of its kind like inception or titanic you call them by name or lead actors but when you have a series like the matrix you no longer refer to them as that keanu reeves movie
So basically a bunch of egotistical actors are upset that we care more about the characters they play instead of the vapid money-obsessed personalities they really have when the cameras aren’t rolling.
Tom cruise, leo, brad pit, ryan gosling, denzel, the rock are all "movie stars"
regardless of how good a movie is, they have to sell it. Big name actors with a reputation for good performances brings in a lot of attention. Some mcu actors success extends past their marvel roles, some don’t. Simu liu isn’t a movie star or a name that helps sell a movie on a good performance. He’s Shang chi, outside of marvel his name means nothing.
I completely agree, just looking at last's years oscars you can't tell me there were truly famous movie stars in there
That's the point tho. To create characters that go beyond the actor playing them.
Oh my god, it's almost like we watch movies for the characters and plot, not just for the people in them
Mackie was known as Clarence who lived at home with both parents. And his parents have a real good marriage before he was casted as Falcon. But he wasn't a big time actor before falcon. But also actors/actresses need to be in more great roles than just ones people know the character and i feel its skewed argument because they go off the basis of social media, which is dominated by a younger audience. People that are in their 30s and up still know these actors/actresses by name. Like Ryan Reynolds is still a star for all he's done. Tarantino is wrong. Jennifer Anniston is washed so I see why she would say that. Also RDJ is also known for his Sherlock Holmes role
It's one rule I always follow about movies or TV shows the actor is one person that can take one many different characters but is not THAT character.
I still wouldn't be going to see "the next DiCaprio movie" though. Talented as he is, I'm in the seat to watch the CHARACTER. ...and DiCaprio does a great job portraying characters.
Movie stars I think still have their relevance, Leo, Morgan Freeman, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Jack Nicholson. All of these actors I can safely say people will still go to the cinema just because they are in it but the list is slowly deteriorating.
The problem is that actors are now playing roles who are also actors. People with 2 identities Robert plays a character that also dresses up as another character
We have keenue reeves, Nicolas cage, Sam Jackson, Morgan freeman, Tom cruise, Johnny Depp, Denzel Washington, ice cube, Vin diesel, like there's plenty of actors we know by name
I honestly think it’s for the better tbh. People idolize celebrities way too much as opposed to focusing on the art
Chris Pratt, Emma Stone, Adam Driver, Rami Malek, Mark Wahlburg, are all actors that ppl go to see because of their likeness, not cause of a character, maybe chris pratt but he had great dramatic roles that put him in the spotlight way before the mcu
I still follow actors like Florence Pugh
Jason Mamoa. His characters can be iconic but you still want Jason Mamoa
