I lived in Southeast Asia for close to 15 years. Spent the bulk of that in beautiful (gorgeous!) Indonesia. About 8 of those years were spent living out of a tent, riding my bicycle with all my belongings strapped to the back. Had the great fortune of seeing every country in the region. Towards the end of my life there, I finally made it to the one country that had evaded me until that point: Vietnam. Cycled in from Yunnan, China and made my way down to Danang via the Ho Chi Minh Highway. Really lovely ride. I made a plan to spend three full days exploring all that I could in Hanoi. By the end of 7 days, I pried myself away with a somewhat heavy heart. It’s the loveliest city I’ve ever seen. And for my money, it has the best food in a region chock full of amazing cuisine. It is the best of the best. I’d return in a heartbeat if only to have one more meal.

Tony Bourdain is my favorite food commentator. He is more sincere, genuine than most of others doing the same thing. It's so tragic that underneath all of this kindness, openness to other people and their cultures, lurks a permanent depression which ended up taking his life. Miss you Tony. Which year was this shot? Vietnam/Hanoi has changed a lot in 2022. Tradition is slowing being replaced by the phone generation and modern nuclear family culture. What scares me is in the next 50 years, will we still have the loving grandmas cooking family dinners? The uncles riding bikes 200km from village to meet in the city? The unannounced cousin showing up at your place middle of night? The family bonds across multiple generations? Time changes everything- let’s see what it does to Vietnamese spirit. Sometimes, the future is not the best.

There will never be another Anthony Bourdain, you know, his charm, wittiness, snarkiness, friendliness, good manners when the occasions called for, and most importantly his kindness, being big or small, words or deeds, he made good, lasting impressions to so many who were fortunate enough to have met him, known him, and loved him. The one that is coming close second, but can't replace Anthony is Gary Butler. Gary possesses all those aforementioned qualities, though not as fluid as Anthony, but Gary loves food and people & always eager to travel for food & trying new dish. I miss you, Anthony Bourdain, but Gary is curing the emptiness of your absent. RIP.

Very good served with sweetened condensed milk over ice. FYI Vietnamese coffee is all robusta so its pretty high in caffeine.

I wish I could retire their. All I would do is eat, ride my bicycle and paddle my Kayak from one fishing spot to another. The food looks amazing. I think the people are wonderful. I have good friends from there. When I visit they love to feed me.I eat and love everything.

They knocked down a lot of shots. Anthony Bourdain seemed to be holding his own--so to speak.

It really hurts my heart to hear Tony say “it’s good to be alive…” because I wonder how that became not the case. RIP Tony.

But don't be fooled. Linh is an agent of the communist govt. He's there to make sure no one says anything freely to Tony.. and sure Tony doesn't say anything that the party doesn't approve of. Lihn is not a good guy. Say something wrong and you go to re education camp
