Eh, the fear was mostly only present to the end of the Kruschev years, it kindov mellowed out and just became a bit shit. Oppression became less common and the main issues were state propaganda impeding progress, failure to compete and a system more concerned with keeping itself in power than benefiting the people. So it could've been worse(for the Russians themselves at least) , but it could've been a whole lot better too

But it didn't matter because they were puppet states of the USSR. The soviet armed forces were the largest in the world with 5.5 million personnel, 55000 tanks,94000 AFVs, 50000 artillery guns, 15700 aircraft, 7 aircraft carriers, 33 cruisers, 45 destroyers,113 frigates and 300+ submarines. Many will say that the soviet army was manned by conscripts but the soviet knew about this problem and by the mid 1980s built a professional officer corp of more than 1 million men. This meant that the soviet army would be led much more ably in battle than the red army was led in 1941. The soviet army would perform much better than the red army. The soviet union had warsaw pact which allowed it station 600k ground troops in eastern europe. Modern russia doesn't even have influence over ukraine. The soviet union was the world's 2nd largest economy till 1989. Modern russia is ranked as the 6th largest economy by PPP and 11th by nominal GDP. Modern russia is crippled by loss of the former SSRs and warsaw pact members. The black sea used to be secured by all sides except in the south. The baltic sea too was secured. The soviet union and warsaw pact protected the russian heartland from invasions. Today NATO is on russia's doorstep. Modern russia is definitely in a much weakened state than the USSR. The soviet union was leader of eastern Europe and most of asia. Russia is the leader of only the central asian countries and belarus today and its hold on central asia is being challenged today by china.

The MOST POWERFUL Anthem! I've loved it since I've heard it 4 the 1st time and always wanted know the lyric! THANKS FOR THE TRANSLATION! It's beautiful!

I'd say, being a communist myself, this song and it's many variations feel different. Rather than aprecciating merely it's melody, and what little I could make out of the lyrics, I aprecciate what it meant to the people of the USSR, and to the working classes of the world. The USSR will most likely never come back, but the people's fight will continue, and hopefully, we'll have something similar to it in the future, near future, I hope.

Communism is, theoretically, a good idea but it has one big flaw: it doesn't take into account the human spirit and the people's determination to improve their status, i.e., being able to own two cars as opposed to just one, being able to have a better house with a private swimming pool (in the USSR there were swimming pools, but they were public), for instance. That flaw and political corruption killed communism.

You gotta admit one thing about communists, they have the best beards
