From my radio experience that goes back in the early 70s beginning with the CB band, I say, "Go for the gusto! Get the most complicated and best quality equipment, rip open them operating manuals, and read and play with all the knobs, buttons, and features that they have!" That's what a Hobby is; have fun with it!

Great video with good information, as the rookie I am I thought you would demonstrate how to use these tuners, I guess I must move on to continue the search.

remember if you have a multi band vertical like a zero five or some that MFJ makes , or flag poles you have to use a remote tuner at the antenna because those antenna have line a 7to 1 , 9 to 1 depending one the band , a manual or auto next to your station it would build up to much heat and won't be to effective , I have a 75 ft run of LMR 400 and was loosing 15-18 watts at the antenna I went to a remote and the loss was 5 watts ,

The ATU in the Xiegu G90 is also very effective.

I started with manual tuner for my IC7300 but they are a pain to adjust all the time, if you're changing bands a lot. AT100 autotuner was worth every penny. It is just so simple when it tunes automatically.

Once again Peter thank you for sharing your extensive experience with us. I have one question (if I may) My ATU doesn't have a balanced output just a 50 ohm UHF plug type output. Will it still work if I use a 4:1 balun to feed a doublet antenna? kindest Adrian

I see some stations will put there atu outside near the hookup at the ant, maybee they use coax and eliminate the loss in the feedlines that way thx for vid

Yes, you are right. I have an external automatic tuner, It goes under the antenna, It needs a good ground connection. I have used the structure of the outsider room, It Is all in steel. My tuner comes from a old SSB transmitter (skanty) It was used on board of the commercial ship. It Is mealy 40 years old, but It Still does its job. It tunes any frequency starting from 1,6 to 30 MHz. I use an old wip antenna 2,5 Meter and other 4 Meter of commun wire 6 mm. Antenna total length 6 Meter. Tuning procedure of amy frequency Is done in less then 2 seconda. I wery Happy of this automatic tuner, It Is old, but great. Just to give an idea, It Is from skanty TRP 8400, I fix It because had a problema with a track damage on PCB due to water leak. 20 years now It Is there and it's ok. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

Should I still use my external antenna tuner if my radios internal antenna tuner can tune the antenna?

"Antenna tuners" (in the radio, on the desk or at the base of the vertical) alters the phase relationship between the RF current and Voltage complementary to the matching error at the feed point of the antenna, making the system work as though there were no matching error. The matching error is frequency dependent. Ron W4BIN

1st "tuner" I got, my local Ham friends thought I'd kicked on an amplifier as I got 1.0:1 SWR on the 10-meter band and they all said I came up with at least an S unit and louder, better sounding modulation. For about 2 weeks they were begging me to tell them what I'd done to improve the signal. They'd sworn that I'd put an amplifier in line with at least a couple hundred more watts than the 100 watts from the radio itself! For months they'd talked down about antenna tuners and boasted about tuning "the hard way". And then, I finally broke down and told them that it was an antenna tuner. AND - pointed out having seen pictures of their shacks with antenna tuners in line making total hypocrites of themselves.

Since I relate to the new ham operator, I have both an MFJ 949E Versa Tuner and a LDG Z100A, needing direction for use with the Yaesu 991A. Since both the manuals for the 991A and the LDG ATU briefly offer support, I want to find direction to use the ATU with my Yaesu rig. Can you offer some insight or resources to this new ham to help keep me from burning up my rig? I do use the My Go2 portable/stealth antenna from TN07, a 40m and 20 m home brew dipole, and I also successfully wound a 49:1 40-10m EFHW. With the My Go2 working below 1.8:1 I have no issue with tuning the kit. However, the EFHW was a bit hard on several bands with 40m, 20m, 15m, and 10m being the easiest with the internal tuner in the 991A. I really don’t want to burn the finals out of my rig by using anything but the My Go2, which is consistent to be less than 1.6-1.8:1 on 80m through 6m. I love HF phone to say the least! I want to keep my kit working properly without destroying it for not knowing proper use. Thank you for your time! Bill KC3RMV, Pennsylvania

Hi Bill, You would need to make up an adaptor cable from the AT100 to power (+12 volts Ang ground). I think you then need to take the Key line to the ring connector on a 3.5 mm stereo plug, with ground on the sleeve of the plug. This then plugs into the REM/ALC socket on the back of the 991a. Then tap the Menu button and change item 141 to "LAMP". The internal tuner will be disabled. You can then tune by pushing the Tune button on the tuner. This should cause the radio to transmit a carrier while the AT100 tunes, then it will drop back to receive when it has finished tuning.
