ANSYS Tutorial: Moving Heat Source in ANSYS

Welcome back to another tutorial!
Today we will be going through how to set up a simulation with a moving heat source in the steady state thermal module in ANSYS workbench. This tutorial teaches you how to take advantage of the ANSYS extensions in order to make you simulation easier to setup!
Hope this was helpful!

    Hello, I work on my master thesis and am a novice in CAD and FEM. I try to simulate ultrasonic metal welding process but currently stuck with boundary conditions. The main problem at the moment is that I cannot apply the vibration motion to my system. In ultrasonic welding an upper metal sheet slides along the x-axis on top of another one with a frequency of 20 kHz. In some paper I found a formula: Ux = Xsinwt, where X is the amplitude of vibration (27.5 micrometers). E.g., upper sheet first goes to the left direction, then returns to the initial position, then goes to the right direction and so on. w = 2πf , f is 20 kHz. Welding time in the real process is about 1-2 s, but for saving computational time it could be 0,1 s in Ansys for the beginning. So I need to apply this equation in Ansys as a displacement. Perhaps it usually applies with APDL but do not understand how.

    Hi!! Nice video!! I have a doubt, when you select the path in 'moving heat flux' you only can select the line which separate the 2 workpieces, but for example I need to select a particular path, which It's in the middle of a geometry (a weld bead). So I've made a 'path' with 'construction geometry' inside the model, but then in the options of the path (in moving heat flux) I can't select this path because the options are only 'geometry selection' or 'named selection' in the 'scoping method'. How can I select the path that I want? thankss!!

    Hi Ángel Artero Real, Unfortunately this is one of the limitation of this plug-in. Like all the regular boundary conditions that we can add, the "path" of the "moving heat flux" has to either be chosen from a "named selection" or a "geometry". Creating a path using the "construction geometry" is a very useful tool for examining the results at a specific location but to my knowledge, it cannot be used to define the scope of the boundary condition such as in this case the path of the moving heat flux. I would suggest if you can, constructing your geometry as shown in the video, where the path separates the work piece. To my knowledge this is the best (unfortunately the only) way to do it using this particular plug-in.

    @@Schausteller-ni7mg This is a very weird situation... My suggestion would be to verify the download and the installation into plug-in page. Note that on the website it says the extension can be used for ANSYS version 17. Currently I am using 19.2 and it seems to be working correctly but if you are using an older version you may run into problems. As I typed this something came to mind. Are you using imperial units on your geometry/meshing modules? It is possible that the plug-in was written specifically for SI units. So it is possible that if "mechanical" is set to imperial units, the code for the plug-in does not know/does not understand how to interpret these units (converting between them, etc). This is just a hypothesis of what could be the issue though.

    Hi great video Can this be tweaked so that the heat source remains static for a few seconds and the power of the laser increases either while moving or not moving? Thanks

  • @theengineeringguide8332

    @theengineeringguide8332

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey! As for a static heat source this would be possible. In this case you would have to break this motion into 2 different heat sources. The first heat source would be have a velocity of zero over a certain period of time. Once that period of time is over, you would be able to specify a second heat source that starts in the location where the static heat source was and that has a velocity (and path) in order for it to move. As for varying power intensity, unfortunately this is one of the limitation using a plug-in rather than coding the APDL commands yourself. The plug-ins are much easier to use than the commands but you experience limitations using them. Unfortunately, unlike other forces and BCs, for the moving heat source, you are not able to specify the power intensity in terms of a function or a table (rather only 1 value can be specified).
