Ansys Fluent PEMFC Tutorial (2020R2)
This video details the entire process of creating a working PEMFC model using the PEMFC add on module for Ansys Fluent. Some useful tips are included for geometry creation, meshing and Fluent setup.

Thank you so much for such a informative and nicely explained video. Looking for more videos like this on Fuel cell.😊
Very interesting and useful video!
Thanks Conor!

hello, can we also use the PEM fuel cell module while doing PEM electrolyzer work?
Hello Sir, This is a great tutorial. I want to seek clarification regarding defining the individual component as either fluid or solid. At 4:40, you suggested that only the two flow plates are to be defined as solid and the rest others as fluid, while ANSYS recommendations is to define the membrane as solid. While doing so, the results differs. How to take care of this?
nice video. very informative. have you done any project on SOFC using Fluent?
how to create geometry or is there any files to download for geometry
Hi, really good video on PEMFC simulation for beginners. Can you also share a video on PEMFC geometry design. Thank you.
hello, does anyone here know how to change the stoichiometry number in PEMFC simulation, I failed to change it many times
Doing mcfc simulation similar to this method or different?
please I need a tutorial on SOFC by Ansys Fluent
Hi Conor, thank you for sharing your tutorials. I am performing some simple simulations with a single cell and a straight channel but the current density of the cathode falls to zero after few iterations. How can I face this issue? Thank you

Hi sir, I do hope this message reaches you out as soon as possible and i hope you reply ASAP. I am pursuing Masters and my thesis topic is optimization of ffp in PEM FC and there is not a lot of help I could find and I have been trying to doil this on my own and I am completely lost. I try to runs results but they diverge all the time. Is there any literature, papers, forums, thesis anything anything related to ansys PEM FC add on module that I can read, talk or ask. Please share with me. I absolutely need guidance and I have none.
But I cant made cfd desing Can you help me this inssue
Could you please share the file?
Hello Conor! May I/ We get the tutorial for this particular topic from the beginning to intermediate or advanced level? Or, can you please let me know where can I get more in-depth knowledge about this particular simulations regarding PEMFC?
Thank you for the video, kindly help me to develop the geometry of the PEMFC.
Hey what do we do in post processing to get the VI polarization curve?

Hi Srinivas, I used design points in Ansys workbench to run a number of simulations at different cell voltages and then extracted the resulting current densities for each point. After I had a table of Voltage vs. Current densities in workbench I simply copied the data into Excel and plotted the VI graph. There are many ways to do this step, for a single cell and low amounts of data points, Excel or Matlab would be the easiest I think. If you are running large batches you may want to look deeper into Ansys post processing or python scripting. Hope this helps, Conor
Thank you for the video But, while initializing i get -" Warning : convergence tolerance of 1.0000000e-6 not reached during Hybrid Initialization." How do I solve it

check your mesh carefully and refine it as much as possible
What is the format of design files you have imported in Design Modeler? Great work. Easy to understand.

I am not sure exactly, there are many problems that it could be try some of the following: 1. Double check inlet and outlet flow conditions (gas mixture, temperature, mass flow rate) to ensure they are realistic 2. Turn off electrochemistry sources option in the PEMFC model menu for the first few (~10-20) iterations to let the gas flow settle down, then turn it back on 3. Create a number of different contour plots to view where the problem is occurring 4. Turn off the option "Use half cell potentials" in the PEMFC model menu, this allows you to specify the cell voltage in the parameters tab. This might help the simulation to run, but it sounds as if there is a more general problem with the setup which you need to get to the bottom of to trust your results.

@@conortwohig5957 thank you sir! one more plz. when i turn on joule heating or spiciecs heating or liquid phase and start calculation then i got the message "Error: floating point exception" in this case what should i do? :( (it is work well when i turn off that 3 options) regard sol.

Hi, I cannot be sure, about what is going wrong. I struggled with that error a lot myself. My initial idea is that the geometry or meshing are not correct. Check for overlapping geometries, and try to refine the mesh quite a bit in the GDL, MPL, and CL areas in all three dimmensions. Investigate exactly which options are making it diverge, you mention three in your comment but try different combinations to see if it is one specifically. I suspect it could be Joule heating, maybe reaction heating as well. Take many outputs from the cell as possible in contour plots and pause the simulation after 1 or 2 timesteps to find exactly what is going wrong. Sorry I cannot be of more assistance, as I mentioned I am not an expert I have just recently completed a masters myself.

I have never gotten this error but it sounds like either: 1. You are typing it incorrectly Or 2. For some reason your installation of Ansys does not have the PEMFC module included
