ANSYS 17.0 Tutorial - 3D Bridge Truss with Surface Body Platform

ANSYS Workbench 17.0 Tutorial for a three-dimensional (3D) Bridge Truss with a surface slab as the platform. In this tutorial I will go over how to create line bodies or trusses in ANSYS DesignModeler as well as Surface Bodies. We will then go over creating manual contact regions between the truss and the platform or surface, creating the mesh, creating our fixed support and roller constraint (displacement), and finally the pressure load. We will analyze the stress results, deformation results, axial force, bending moment, shear-moment diagram, and reaction force results.

Thanks +DrDalyO for another fantastic video tutorial. Really appreciate that you showed detail of steps especially in the geometry setup of the model. For beginners like me, the more details the better ! I have a question by the way: usually, for truss bridge, we model the connection of the truss to the base as "pinned" connection. The way you did in the video looks like it would be able to transfer moment. How would you release the rotation about y and z axes (the axes other than longitudinal axis of the truss) ? Many thanks

Hi, Im wondering if it is possible to simulate uniaxial/triaxial cylindrical tests assigning some "rock properties" to the sample in order to obtain the rock mechanical properties like UCS, Friction Angle, Tensile Strenght, etc. It is possible to assign random rock properties to the sample, rocks are heterogeneus, porous, brittle, etc..... Please let me know your comments. Thanks, Marcel.

  • @drdalyo

Line bodies save compute time, which means it solver faster. Sometimes you are not interested in all the details of the body but more the effect it has on the transmission of forces to the other body, so in this case you can use a line body for simplification.

Hi, you could check the solver output. It would be under the Solution branch, then Solution Information. In the Details window, look for the first option which is Solution Output and make sure its on Solver Output. There you can scroll down and see some more details about the error. Feel free to post it here. Maybe try redoing the geometry and starting from scratch though, or even try something simpler to start. Hope this helps!

There are some things unclear to me. Are beams pin joints or welded on each other and surface? Because if it's pin joint then the beams carry only the axial forces. But in the results there are bendings on beams which means they are not pin joints. So in case the bridge structure would be truss structure, then how is the model changed? I've seen mech. apdl software is used widely for truss analysis to model truss elements on the other hand for those who claim they are doing truss analysis are actually doing it wrong I think. Thanks in advance!

Any decent computer can run it, however the time to calculate will vary depending on your element, node count and model. Im running a quad core i5 with 8gb ram, and standard nvidia card. You could run on a dual core also. Ansys is very "core" hungry so the more cores you have the faster it will solve. Theres also something called simu cloud i believe where you can run problems on their servers for a fee, and they have tons of computing power.
