Ansible - an absolute basic overview

Ғылым және технология

This is not intended to be a full tutorial - there are several of those out there when you’ve got the time. This is intended to let you sit down in front of somebody’s Ansible setup and have a rough idea of what’s going on in those strange directory layouts and file formats.
Update: It's worth noting that the video is a few years old now, and, while almost everything I still applies, some of the Ansible conventions have changed. In particular, a line like:
apt: update_cache=yes cache_valid_time=36000
would now more commonly be written as:
apt:
update_cache: yes
cache_valid_time: 36000
So you may notice a few changes in recent documentation, but this should still be a good introduction to the topic.

    Fantastic concise overview. Especially the "directory structure" part of the video, that clearly tells what the function of the main parts is for. Why on earth can't RedHat make an overview like this. They are overloading new users with details rather than a simple scope like this. Cheers! Just what I needed!

    This tutorial may be "absolute basic", but it packs a fair amount of information into its concise 20 minutes. Well-organized, and presented in a very understandable way. You covered both how to do things, and how to make them more well-designed / modular / reusable. Quentin, you could totally do this sort of thing at conferences if you are interested. Thank you for sharing!

    Remarkable presentation! Well structured, simply worded, articulated and complete. For someone who's never used puppet, chef or other solutions it helps quite a bit. Would you be able to make another video clarify what's the difference between vagrant and ansible as the vast majority of tutorials present it as a mandatory bundle?

  • @quentinsf

    @quentinsf

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the kind words, Patrick! I have almost no experience of Vagrant, but my understanding is that it's a way of managing virtual machines; of setting them up before you deploy to them. I haven't used it because I tend just to need a small number of machines on VirtualBox on my local PC; either that or we're deploying to Amazon and we use Ansible to provision those directly using the Amazon APIs (and Ansible's built-in support). So I think of Vagrant as one of the ways of starting up lots of VMs, and Ansible as the thing you use to deploy software to them once they are running. But I know there can be more overlap than that in reality, if you want to use it.
