I grew up in Clermont, which is five miles east of Groveland. My father told me of this miscarriage of justice when I was really young, and I will never forget it! He would often reference it when he would see black men being taken to jail at the county seat which is in Tavares, Fl; "He would always say, "I sho' hope that boy makes it there!" During these times Clermont did not have a jail, only holding cells so, anyone arrested would have to be picked up by Lake county sheriff's department, and taken to jail down this backroad we call Astatula road. I always thought that this atrocity had happened during my time, but it actually happened 12 years before I was born. Willis McCall had a hatred that was so commonplace during those times it was scary, and it's still scary just thinking about it. To show how racist some still are, a road in northern Lake county Florida was to be named in his honor! In honor of what? Him being responsible for countless deaths of blacks?! Thank God it was shot down the same way he shot down blacks during his tour of duty which according my father seemed to last a lifetime! And he was still the sherriff when I was a kid!! My best friend's uncle was the one that was shot in the head, and I can only imagine the unnecessary grief that this family, and the others endured! 😭😭 The lies, the cover ups, the miscarriage of justice that was just rectified posthumously. These men deserved so much better than they received! They deserved fairness, but that is a word that is oftentimes not applicable to people of color within the justice system. And the so called victim, should have been locked up for lying under oath, but as usual nothing happen to her! One thing I can say she's kept her LIE ALIVE, even in these men's death! She will pay for her misdeeds!! But I hesitantly digress.

Our time will come! Our salvation is on it's way! My thoughts and prayers go out to ALL black brothers and sisters surviving the struggle! Let's continue to uplift, educate, and support one another. STAY WOKE FAMILY!!!!✊✊✊✊✊✊

Scott Souder My grandmother who was born in the mid 20s and still alive today is still in fact living this pain. My father and his 6 bothers and sister, all born in the years between late 40s, and 50s, have remembered and lived through jim crow and civil rights movements. Growing up in the South my grandmother, father, and aunts can all cosign on this pain. So please explain to them, my grandmother especially how "you people" still cling to this pain because im sure she can tell you. Even ask my father im sure he'll have wonderful stories for you!

Thank you for posting this. I teach Political Science courses at the post secondary level. This case is critical in understanding the U.S. Injustice system and U.S. Constitutional Law. Cases like this prove that the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments do not mean freedom and definitely not equality for our people. It is time we separate and build our own economy, political system, educational system, and spirituality that is free of white supremacy. As a white police officer I am ashamed by these histories. Thankfully we've come a long way since then but we still have a ways to go.

My mom told me this story when I became an adult. I was amazed because Walter Irvine's mother was my baby sitter. She told me how black men were leaving town for there own protection and families sending young men away.
