Do think your right about the small acting group, that big Finish were able to use at the time as both Mark Gatiss and David Warner appeared togther in the frist Sapphire and Steel story which came out the same year. So both suffer from the same type of problems. So I imagine if it was written today they would probably cast an actor such as Clem So. Plus in the early days of big finish I think it was just 'we are Small Company we have a licence for a few things for this particular sandbox and see what we can get away with' I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the David Warner unbound doctor

For me I've always viewed Gatiss as the self aware Master, without the Doctor to blame for all his mistakes he becomes more aware of his own short comings and tries to change his ways often without success. Not sure how I feel about Warner's Doctor, there's an interesting level of defensive behaviour regarding his responsibility for dealing with what's happened in his absence which I hope his later appearances fleshes out.
