I like that in a lot of these projects, you can just go to the leader of the project and ask them a question. In Britain, the man in charge will cut the ribbon with a blank face, stand around for a few minutes, then leave in his car.

Watching this video as an American makes me feel like a peasant seeing a castle for the first time. We truly are behind.

The entire thing is just so smart! The Netherlands is so far ahead in thinking about and improving sustainable transportation. Electric cars are still cars, requiring too much money , space, and urban infrastructure. Bikes make more sense, and are better for the health of cyclists and the urban population as a whole. Yay for the Netherlands, from Canada.

Yes almost every country is better then "first world" country usa with public transport. Look at Thailand with high speed rail link up the 3 airports. Indonesia is building high speed rail and will operational in 2022 of 2023. What is usa doing fighting each other out in the capitol hill and protecting own seat instead working together building strong country that will benefit all citizens.

@@illiiilli24601 not really because after w2 rebuilding the Netherlands Americans told us destroy the old building for build high ways and parking garage around Amsterdam. Lucky we said no to that plan.

To get a sense of the context: there are similar garages just a few hundred metres on both directions, and the mega huge one beneath the train station only a few hundred metres after that.

Yup. Capacity of all those parking facilities will be around 33,000 but still needs to be expanded.

I was thoroughly unimpressed by the look of the building when i first moved here. Im glad that it got a much needed update and more bike parking is always needed in that part of town

@@RealConstructor I don't think for Frikandeln, but that is unfair. Too regional. But croquettes (Japanese c.) and pre-grilled burger patties I have seen in a video. Underwear is also true, but the famous used girls underwear thing was probably just a legend. Unfortunately that was pre smartphone days, so it might have existed, but no proof.

meanwhile in germany, we also starting to get cycle garages. But access only by stairs and as inconvenient as possible. But probably at 10 -20 times the cost of this thing here. And of course not without lining a befriended architect bureau's pockets

Baby steps. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Once they are in use they become increasingly difficult to ignore. Also business owners will start to recognize the value of 900 bikes Vs 40-50 cars.

Thanks to your channel I'll definitely use this one next time I go shopping. I've only been living in Utrecht for about a year but it's nice to see there's so many bike facilities.

I hope to have bike parking problems like this in my town someday! I should be careful what I wish for I suppose.. I would love to see secure bike parking facilities (probably not at this scale anytime soon) at rail transit stations here in Utah.

Bicycles, ebikes, electric cargo bicycles, robo taxis and escooters are great options for last mile, short distance travel. Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles by providing SAFE, PROTECTED BIKE LANES and trails. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. Bicycles are healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. Electric bicycles are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Ride to work, ride to school or ride for fun. Children should be able to ride a bicycle to school without having to dodge cars and trucks. Separated and protected bike lanes are required. It will also make the roads safer for automobile drivers. Transportation planners and elected officials need to encourage people to walk, bike and take public transportation. Healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. In the future cities will be redesigned for people not cars. Crazy big parking lots will be transformed.

In Holland if you don’t have a car , it’s not a big problem but if you don’t have a bicycle , then you have a serious problem and it is a fact , Because you need it so often and it has so many advantages that you can’t mis it .

They did a good job bringing that building back to its original glory to. Many cities just would have demolished it.

I find it a bit of a coincidence that you made a video about a 900-space bike parking garage 5 videos before your 900th video.

Does anybody know if a Brompton folding cycle can be parked in the racks designed for standard bikes? In its unfolded state, I mean.

It works by muscle power, tho you won't need much of that. You pull out the slot and it will come down to form kind of a ramp. You roll the bike onto it (lock it), then lift the slot and push it back in. It might be a bit tricky the first time you do it, but it's not hard or heavy. There is room for improvement there, nevertheless.

The streets will never be free of parked bicycles because people like me like to park their bicycle as close to where they need to be as possible. With hinderances like underground bike parking I can just as well take a car.

@@bastiaan4129 Not sure where you live, but good luck being quicker than bike in centre of Utrecht, even if need to park your bike in "hinderances" like these. Parking bike at blocked places on the street (as close as possible) will become costly and time-consuming where it is not allowed and enforced. (getting bike back costing around 20, plus your lock is broken)

@@tom.jacobs I live in Zwolle so if I need to go to Utrecht i'll just take the train. In Zwolle they are doing the same stuff though, making it harder and less convenient to park your bicycle, remove all convenient bicycle racks and sending in those government thieves to steal your bike. People cycle because it's more convenient than a car, large underground bicycle storages are just as convenient as a carpark, all the extra unecessary walking is not why people ride a bicycle. I've had my bike stolen by those bike thieves three times now, never had to pay a cent because they can't prove that I improperly parked my bike (which I didn't, someone probably just threw my bike out of a bike rack) Those bastards are also open on such stupid times that you'll actually have to take time off from work to get your stolen bike back, that doesn't seem like a service I should lose more money on.

The cargo bike on the ramp got me thinking, is there a lift or something for a handicapped rider who would struggle to push their trike up and down a ramp?

I live in Utrecht didn’t we have these bicycle ‘parking lots’ many years back? I mean I placed my bicycle a few years back when every time when I went to work. This is just another one

@@tom.jacobs The odd amount comes from the calculations of what an average bicyclist would spend on parking fees, plus the time it took to make the calculations, plus the €15,00 worth of coffee the civil servant who did the calculations drank, plus the time he spent in the toilet, plus what it costs to clean his cups and saucers. Otherwise the amount would have been €31, 53.

The legendary originally French department store that was here from 1925 to 1981 was called Galeries Modernes and they only changed the first bit. So now we're stuck with a Dutch building with a bizarre part English and part French name. Thanks marketing guys...

My bicycle does not fit in those racks because it has these racks at the front wheel for bags, since it is a touring bicycle. So I would have to park it in a space for cargo bikes and I doubt the warden would agree.

That's a really good facility ! Glad it has toilets too, sadly these are paid...

While the Netherlands has excellent infrastructure when it comes to mobility, (free) public toilets, especially outside the city centers, are still rare or are often out of order. Fortunately, there are ongoing public campaigns to provide more free, public toilets. Usually you'd have to go to a bigger shop or a cafe. However, it is customary that consumption is obligatory - even though many cafes that allow you to use the restroom(/toilet) for free.

Yeah not a fan of these, it takes too long to park my bike. The ramp is a pain although some have stairs those are way worse. The worse thing is finding en pulling out your bike out of a rack on train stations I usually take a picture of where I stored my bike. It would be cool to have a bike garage where you can just bike in and out instead of pushing it up a ramp one bike a time.

Maybe if you go to one shop in and out, but if you are going to a cafe or walking around they are pretty handy. It also makes sure they aren't stolen.

I notice there really isn't anything to lock the bikes to... are you not concerned about theft - especially for those expensive large cargo bikes?

Secondly, most of these garages are at place like big shopping malls or train stations. You can still park your bike in front of your supermarket or your office, a thing you can’t do with a car in city’s.

Because the laws around (most of) the electric scooter (or step) on the road has not been changed/updated (yet) to make them street legal. With the exception of some Electric scooters that could be classified as an Electric moped or Electric bicycle.

@@artman40 The size of the vehicle does not change the fact that the law around them isn't changed/updated to be allowed to be on the road. Those scooters/steps has their own problems, especially those ones you can rent from an app in different North American cities where people just leave them willynilly, even on someone elses private property. So if ever/whenever those scooters/steps are allowed to be on the road, I really hope it is only privately owned ones and not those renting apps ones, unless they change their loitering problems.

because cycling is a exercise and riding a e-scooter isn't. this sounds weird, but if you take in account that the dutch goverment pays alsmost all the medical costs. it makes sense that they don't want e-scooters. the same is with mopeds, the goverment makes it harder and less atractive to ride a moped and promotes bike usage.

Every bike has/ gets a barcode sticker and the cyclists get/ has another barcode. Both barcodes are scaned by the guard/ warden during entry and a second scan during exit. It prevents theft very well. And the wardens are always very friendly. I love to be a cyclist in Utrecht.

Nice but really? The conveyor works.for.light bikes which may not even need it but fails.with heavy bikes where it actually would be handy? That's a fail. Also that it seems like people are asked to only walk as soon as entering is also a fail in my opinion.

A regular Dutch bike is not light as a sports bike and the conveyor will absolutely help kids, elderly or small women to bring up their bikes. Not being able to lift a cargo bike is indeed a fail.

Most bikes weigh quite a lot here. Steel frame, loaded with beer/milk/groceries. Or have a heavy battery pack and electric motor. They are commuter bikes, not sports bikes,

No they didn't, there are lockers with sockets so you can lock your battery away while it is being charged.

More lanes, more parkings, more asphalt in order to solve the same problem there was with cars. Apparently bike's didn't changed thinking in Holland so much.

@@chaoticserpent cycling is faster than walking while still moving your legs, not doing an all out fitness, better? As well as that a bicycle (unless it is a classic bakfiets) is more space efficient than a car.

Nahh to small. Also Utrecht is become more and more auto luw. (i think is a good thing.) keep the cars on the highways and main roads and the people in the city.

I don't like these entrances and exits cause I prefer steps over hills. Why didn't they fit in a conveyor belt like the Amsterdam Zuid As bike parking? I prefer to stand with my bike without having to limp downhill....

Hills downstairs are only bad if you put on pumps and it is steep.

I guess there is no sufficient space to fit a full person conveyor belt like they did in Amsterdam Zuid. It needed to fit within the existing infrastructure.

I prefer hills because having to walk into a bicycle parking instantly renders them a useless waste of time. But then again, I'll just park were i need to be, i'm not going to be inconvenienced by these things at all.

Safety. Because when it rains the floors get very slippery. All that would get you is slightly faster access when dry and pileups the rest of the time.

Because building a decent underground bike parking facility is still too much to ask in the Netherlands. People who park their bikes don't want to walk up and down stairs/ramps, but that message hasn't gotten through to the people who design these things.

You can park it there and pick it up later from the police impound lot. If that works for you, go at it.

I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".
