My Aunt died in 2017 at the great age of 101. She lived on the Island of Guernsey, UK during WWII which was occupied by the Germans and ‘make do and mend’ was very necessary at that time. When I was clearing her house I came across small pieces of elastic, short lengths of wool wound round card (she used to darn my Uncle’s socks), many buttons cut off garments, paper bags, cellophane envelopes (from bought cards), small pieces of cardboard (I remember she used to use these for her shopping lists) etc. etc., all saved to re-use at a later date. All immaculately kept. Her generation certainly puts our now ‘throw-away society’ to shame.

When you have nothing you safeguard every little thing. My Mum is the same, she is 86 now and was 5 when war broke out. She was evacuated to Wales with an older sister and brother but no-one would have the boy because they were considered to be dirty and ate too much! She didn't see her mother and other siblings(3 of them) till May 1945 when she was 11! She remembers VE day clearly, celebrating with a crowd in Hamilton Square, Birkenhead and being told off when she went home. I would have loved to take her to a VE celebration next Friday but everything is cancelled but may go ahead for a joint VE and VJ day in mid August. We can hope, that's all we have at present. Loved your memories, Sarah, I agree with you about the throwaway society.🙂🐱😊🦌

Julie Graham We usually celebrate our ‘Liberation Day’ on May 9 in Guernsey and it is a big one at 75 years this year, but sadly all the parades, large get-togethers etc that had been planned are cancelled due to the partial lockdown re virus. We have great community spirit over here at the moment, perhaps a little like the help and support the Islanders gave each other during the Occupation. (From all the stories my family have told me over the years of their experiences).

Thank you for sharing your Aunt's story! I can just imagine the memories that she shared growing up during WWII. You are correct, in today's society, instead of making repairs or using something until it is completely used, it gets tossed in the trash or new ones are purchased. I do re-use my cereal boxes for many things, they do come in handy many times!

Please say hello to your mom from here in the States! Thank you for sharing her story, I can't imagine what it must have been like for her during that time to be away from her family during the war. What memories to have of VE Day and be able to still share those memories! Hoping that the August celebration occurs!

My mom saved all her pull can tops washed and stung on recycled string and wire hung in the attic plus all the pull tabs. 100 or so canning jars even tho she had stopped canning. Miss her but I did overcome saving all the twist ties, paper bags (she had mountains)and cans washed and ready for becoming a tank or something. She also saved every magazine she ever bought, clippings of recipes from newspapers...you get the picture. Useful in a way but not now. We need to do that again to recycle.

Those plastic bags are like gold where I live; the state started taxing them and until Covid forced the return of disposable bags they'd pretty well vanished. The small ones are great for dog poop. BTW - to the watchers out there, let the ads run (if they're not five minutes long or something obnoxious) so the KZreadr gets their ad revenue. I think it has to play at least 15 seconds.

You can (maybe not quite now) donate newspapers and plastic bags to animal shelters. The one local to me is ALWAYS requesting newspaper. They use instead of cat litter. Plastic bags help the volunteers pick up after the dogs they walk. My local library also takes the plastic bags. A woman turns them into baskets and market totes and sometimes hold community classes teaching how to.

It’s the trash piles that are obvious clean-outs🤦🏼‍♀️ And then (in the early 2000’s) THEN😃after I sold a vintage toy-trash rescue on Ebay for $350.00, I’d simply say that they could all kiss my trashy butt😏cause I ain’t gonna stop!😂 Some would also say, “I’d never”... I’d reply, “GOOD, leaves more for me”🤪 I never really cared too much about what others thought, but it did get old and tired but NEVER enough to make me stop! YOU KEEP DOING YOU RENEE! EXACTLY😂☝🏻☝🏻☝🏻Renee I’ve mentioned before that I drove a Suburban, so I had room...so when I discovered a clean out that kept on giving😄I eventually realized that I’d stress less if I just loaded as many (if not all) of the bags at once and then went through them at home. My theory is, they’re most likely going to throw the food away first, especially out of the refrigerator and freezer. But! I have gone home with entire trashy trash bags and tossed food...but hey, whatev😆I didn’t care because in the beginning I would fret and fret about the bags that I didn’t get, so I solved that issue by getting them all😏and that makes me feel better🤗 ~I’ve been driving a 2010 Honda Element for 5 years now. I take the back seats out and leave them in my garage and that leaves me with quite-ah bit of packing room🎉

They came of age during the Great Depression. “Waste not want not” was the way people lived then. On a lighter note - RADIO TUBES! I was impressed that you knew about them, and also knew that some are quite valuable (though many are not). Re bag 5, perhaps the gentleman was an amateur or even side business tv/radio repairman. In 50s and even 60s you could try replacing your own tubes by taking them to hardware store or? with the suspect tubes, test them and buy a replacement tube ( little like buying replacement auto bulbs now). Of course you could call the local tv repairman who arrived with a selection of your treasure tubes while you prayed it wasn't the costly picture tube. Just some early tv history. Keep up the great work, you are delightful.

Those tubes really brought back memories, I worked at a factory that cut mica. The mica was used inside of those tubes. There was nothing worst then a tube going out on the t.v. During a good show. Enjoying these real bag of trash.

There is definitely a market for the radio tubes! My husband subscribes to a couple of You Tubers who repair vintage radios and televisions. There are still people out there looking for those things.

Most of those tubes look like they are TV tubes, but some of the radio tubes are big money. Make sure you check each and every one. A good place to start is the largest size tubes first. Bass tubes are usually large and those are the big money ones. If you don't have any high dollar tubes, lots of 10-15 usually sell for $20-40 if they are usable. Good luck and nice score! Cheers!

I love that you are saving all the treasures from the dump. I too love vintage holiday stuff. I buy the stuff that others don't want, or so it seems. Relatives ask me WHY? do I want that trashy thing. It has a history. It meant something to someone. So keep digging through the trash, no matter what everyone else thinks. I think it's pretty cool! Happy treasure hunting!

Some of those tubes might be quite valuable. My husband and I are Ham radio operators and have spent alot of money on matched tubes for the older radios we use. So definitely check out the prices on the tubes. But also be careful with them. It would be terrible to break a 100.00 tube. Stay safe and God Bless

The clothes you find in these bags look like they’ve been wadded up for a long time. The heirs didn’t do that, the original lady did that. When she no longer wanted to wear a clothing item, she wadded it up and pushed it into a plastic bag... to save for rags. Older folks, that’s what they do. Cause you might need a rag one day.

I have to wonder if whoever is cleaning out the house is just throwing it all away and not sorting usable items from trash because most thrift stores are closed and aren’t accepting donations right now. Or maybe they are in a hurry, because they have limited time to get it done or the house is about to close to the new owners, or something like that. Anyway, it is fun seeing what is in the bags and there are many treasures mixed in with the ‘trash’. Love the vintage baby items! Can’t believe they saved the potty seat and the changing pad. The plastic lamb rattles you found a few days ago would make a cute Easter garland decoration!

People of their age grew up in a time where you used and reused, handed down, patched up, and recycled any way you could to save money! There weren't any social programs to turn to if you were in need, you had to do for yourself and family. My parents were born in 1919 and 1923. Right up to the time they passed, they were still washing out milk bags, and reusing them as freezer bags! They would not buy plastic bags as long as they were handed out for free, and could be reused. TFS Hugs!

I always save my grocery store bags to bring to the flea market when I sell. The small newspaper bags that I've been finding wouldn't be so great for the flea market, as they are too small. But, I've been able to recycle some & give some to others that can use them!

It's really funny because I can't recall coming across anything in any of the bags that had a bad smell. It's the normal "stuff stored in a house" smell, which makes looking through the bags a lot more easier for me!

My father is nearly 93 & grew up with the belief all things had value. Equipment & clothes were made to last. Saturday morning in my town was when the dump was open for taking your garbage over to get rid of it. Common occurrence was most people came home with more than they took to throw away. My Mom would "yell" about Dad bringing home everybody's junk. Funny thing was, she was as much of a pack rat as he STILL is! Lol! 💕👍
