Another Look at the Neo Geo X - Hybrid Gaming before the Switch | MVG

Ойындар

The Neo Geo X (NGX) is a hybrid video game console manufactured by Tommo, licensed by SNK Playmore. It released in 2012 and discontinued in 2013. The Neo Geo X features games that were on the popular original Neo Geo (the MVS/AES) hardware, and comes built-in with 20 original Neo Geo games. Additional titles were available on game cards. In this episode we take a look at the Neo Geo X console, what made it unique and why it ultimately was a disappointment.

PSP 2000 with a component cable and yes the Go with a Sixaxis/Dualshock 3 yes expands on it. That or Pocket PCs (Ultra Mobile PCs) before the Steam Deck. The Joycon separation and splitscreen are unique for a handheld or in general (controller separation is completely but splitscreen yes isn't new for PC or console just handhelds). I count the Gamecom, Ngage, Zodiac and Gizmondo but more in a phone/PDA on the go way then to the TV.

If the Nomad counts as a hybrid than surely the PSP counts as well with its AV output? The big pain with both is having to keep a charger plugged in for long sessions. And it's pretty awkward to have both the AV and power cablea hanging off it.

The Go might have been different but as far as the 2000 & 3000 were concerned? Yeah, no it was really irritating. Nomad you just plugged in and it worked. I have this thing! Bought it when it released and mostly played it in handheld. For some reason, I'm a sucker for all NEO GEO remake boxes; I have the mini arcade (the international version) and the Arcade stick that has a bunch of games built-in. I am aware of the issues this device faces, but one thing you didn't touch on is how it looks MUCH better on a standard def TV. If you use the composite breakout cable included in the box, it looks far better. Yeah, it isn't perfect, but the modding scene is great and that hardware is a really cool thing to have on your shelf. People are always blown away when they shriek that I have a NEO GEO, and I slide the lock to make it pop open :)

I discovered this morning that if I output to my CRT using the HDMI into a cheap Aliexpress HDMI to composite converter instead of the included composite cord, you get a way better picture. It looks sharper than the HD out on an HDTV. The colors are far more accurate, less saturated, and the screen isn't so cut off on the edges. It won't do anything about the screen tearing, but it is a night and day improvement.

I was so excited to purchase mine used off of ebay, along with a whole box of genesis games to go along with it. I was even able to connect it to my TV via RCA ports and attach another controller for 2-player support on the TV. It was absolutely terrible on batteries, and you basically also needed to have the wall outlet connection if you didn't want to go broke and change batteries every couple hours. But I loved it!

Luckly mine was one with the first batches with the internal micro SD card holder/slot for the internal memory (comes with a 2GB micro SD) which was later replaced by a nand chip in newer revision(s). Ended up adding all the NeoGeo games with icons and swapped out the regular NeoGeo bios to the Unibios one. Likewise, I bought mine with the extra game packs on launch. Just a word of caution however and you might want to check that the battery hasn't decided to leak all it's goodness onto the mainboard. After several years of being stored in it's box I decided to use mine mid last year. To my horror the battery had expanded, pushing the back out on the unit and leaking onto the board inside. The back cover was ruined (I ordered a replacement) and I removed the battery (wires connecting it are soldered on). I've yet to source another battery of the same or similar dimensions but I'll get around to that at some point. Anyway, it's worth making sure yours isn't also starting to leak.

The Neo Geo X being the first true hybrid system is not a fine statement, because, while the Neo Geo X was release in 2012, in 2009, Sony released the PSPgo, who have a dock as an accessory sold separadly, and can be paired with a DualShock 3. We can argue the PSPgo is a updated version of an already released system who was originally not designed to be hybrid, or the dock is sold apart of the system, while the Neo Geo X was build as a hybrid system in mind, and came with the dock in the bundle, but it's a fact the PSPgo works and looks closer to what a Switch is than the Neo Geo X, and it came 2 years before... Anyway, the video is really informative. Thank you for the nice material...

I had dug out my original PSP and made it my compact on-the-go Neo Geo emulator. I too always wanted a Neo Geo system, but the $650 price with $250 games was just a non starter. Fast forward to today and Neo Geo on the Switch seems to be one of the best, and most authentic experiences for those games...once you get over the weird start-up lag.

For a while, it was the best option to play PSP games on large screen and allowed for playing almost all the same PS1 titles as real hardware, with great accuracy - of course, you needed to mod it, because not all were available on PS Store. It would remain the best option still, but nowadays PS TV with sharpscale plugin, crisp HDMI output and Dual Shock 4 (even Dual Sense if you install homebrew plugins) support takes the cake - but it is no longer a handheld device. But yeah, PSP Go is mostly a forgotten relic of era when people were going "ewww" when thinking about digital-only console without physical media. It was also released late into PSP lifecycle. Neo Geo X and even Nomad were interesting devices, but they weren't mainstream either. Only two handhelds were: PSP 2000 and 3000 - they sold at significant number, had great library of titles and TV output, which was really easy to set up - cable was all you needed, console itself acted as a controller. In reality, PSP is the only console which done similar thing to Switch and met moderate success.

About 6 or so years ago if I got the math right, I walked into a Walmart and there was a brand new Sega Nomad behind the glass. $600. The box was kind of beat up. I was so confused. I'm guessing either a manager had one and used Walmart to sell it, or a manager found one stacked away in the back and since it was legit theirs, they tried to sell it......for 600 friggin bucks. Wonder what happened to it.......

I forgot that it existed! I remember that I wanted one if I could get a custom ROM that would make it feel more like a Dingoo type device with music and video playback features, but I don't think one was ever developed. I also forgot that the back kinda looked like the back of a BlackBerry phone of the time.

I have one of these, and I remember really hoping it'd work well. Unfortunately, mine had a busted switch for the clicky stick, so movement to the right didn't click. Might not sound like much, but it was pretty bad when every other direction clicked. I remember trying to email support, or _anyone_ about this to try at least to get a replacement part I could de-solder/re-solder myself (if possible), but I never got any response. I still like the usb Neo Geo sticks, although I never really use them for anything even if they'd probably be good for emulation. I still wish this thing would work well, but now it just kinda sleeps in the Neo-Geo sized game case that came with the game pack with all the games they were offering. Doubt I'll ever pull it out again.

So many hybrids though. Panasonic Q as GameCube/DVD among others. JVC X Eye Genesis, Karaoke and more, others consoles with computer options. Ngage/Gamecom/Gizmondo/Zodiac for PDA/Phone and gaming hybrids then just to the tv hybrids. Besides well tablets/phones cable or wireless to the tv (besides mobile computing being a hybrid). Didn't know the NEO GEO had an X system (during or before the mini console period?) come out also cool it can be hooked up in such a way too wow. But the Nomad yes. PSP 2000 too. Turbo Express yeah didn't have a video out did it? Pocket PCs/PDAs having a dock. Tapwave Zodiac and Gizmondo only PC syncing like a PSP to a PC no video out I think but those and the Ngage are hybrid because their Mobile or PDAs on the go. Even the Tiger Gamecom had apps a computer would have so they count right? The Switch is great but Nintendo fans over talk it's dock the only impressive is the Joycons splitting and the splitscreen for a console otherwise it's nothing special for video to the TV when so many companies computer or console space existed before the Switch. Tapwave Zodiac, Gizmondo Tiger, Gamecom and Nokia Ngage are hybrid for being phone or PDAs and gaming handheld consoles on the go. I like projected devices to the TV handhelds (Nomad, PSP2000/PSP Go) Pocket PCs with a dock/video cable, a smartphone wirelessly, laptop/tablet with mini/regular HDMI, Super Gameboy to the TV but there is just something.about the Dreamcast, GameCube/GBA/Wii U being dual screen cable or wireless than projecting only 1 screen that makes it more impressive to me. Or dual screen smartphones doing more like use 2 apps at once then the DS/3DS being limited for connection to the same handheld but not two apps just the two visual elements with the 1 software each time.

If SNK made a similar sized AES classic console like NES, SNES, etc. like this with two controllers and loaded with games ~$150, I'd get it. I remember seeing the original console sitting on the shelf back in the day, $600 for console $150 for controller. I think I remember seeing at least one game for $80. This was when NES games could be had for $40-$50 and were long-play games vs. arcade. Funny how people don't mind paying $550 for a console and $150 for 'elite' controllers now. And companies hide $100 games behind DLC.
