Wendell Berry poem:
When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

"The opposite of more is enough." That's a sentence you said on an episode about 6 months ago, and it stuck with me ever since. In fact, over the last few weeks I kept repeating it to myself multiple times a day, as I'm approaching the deadline of my PhD thesis, toward which I have worked for seven years, while also raising two children. You can probably imagine that I felt on a daily basis that I haven't done enough. The simple fact that I can now repeat this sentence you said months ago shows how much your podcast , and your authentic being, resonates with me, and I'm sure I'm not the only one! I am immensely thankful to you for planting this seed in my mind, which has given me so much strength, and resilience, and grace for myself over the last weeks and continues to do so. Please know, that you are valued, and appreciated, and most importantly, you are enough. Thanks for putting yourself out there, Best wishes, Julia

Numbers of subscribers shouldn't measure your success. Your content is always interesting and there are more than a thousand of us who enjoy spending time with you. If you were leading a knitting group and a thousand people showed up, you'd have a bigger problem. Other podcasters drop the names of other pods to get recommendations from them and they get a sudden surge in subs. You're the only one who can decide if your pod is worth your effort. But I, for one, would miss you a lot if you pull the plug.

Heavens Leena, thank goodness you’ve come out the other side of your KZread fug and appeared today in my notifications!! How dare KZread have that effect on you when you’re one of some of our most favourite bloggers (‘our’ being all your other followers). I’ve only come across KZread and knitting blogs since, and as a result of, last years MKAL, and its opened my world up. I subscribed to nearly every knitting video channel I came across but now have settled down to about 5 or so that I really care for and watch with enthusiasm, and yours is absolutely right up there on the top of my list!! Don’t go away!!! I know many people will add comments saying how they love you and what they love about you, so I won’t repeat what everyone else will likely say, but I’ll agree with everyone’s comments. Presenting yourself as you are and your authenticity and vulnerability, is so valuable, and my only regret is we can’t engage with you, like you do for us. I could go on and on, but I won’t. Just know you are loved by so many of us. Looking forward to your next knitting yarn ❤Jen xx

I am a huge fan of yours and look forward each week to your podcasts. I am so glad you came back to podcast again and that you continue to share what is in your heart despite any decline which may have occurred in your YT algorithms (which by the way, I think is only a temporary blip). Perhaps I am mistaken but I worried when you started to share suggestions on how we can live a more "green" and environmentally responsible life that you might lose subscribers. There are so many knitters out there who lean "conservative" and as such might not align with you on these beliefs. I'm sure your goal is not to try to win any popularity contests and that you would happily let those viewers go their own way rather than attempt to alter your content to appease those who don't support it. Please continue to share your authentic self here. For many of us, it is authentic, validating and takes your podcast to another level beyond just "another knitting pod"!. Not to mention your fabulous knitting content!

Hello my friend! I think you are 1000% correct. After reading your comment, it occurred to me that I actually was still gaining subscribers as usual, but that some people were also unsubscribing at the same time. So it looked stagnant. I was very hesitant to talk about climate for this very reason, but I felt like it was too important to follow my heart and not worry about the rest. I wish the fact of climate change were not so politically charged, but alas it is. Thank you for your note. It made the reality click in my mind!

You SCARED me!!! I was holding my breeath with your life update at the end of the video, praying that you were not going to tell us that you were planning to stop or decrease your videos! I have been with you since the very beginning and I feel like you are a bestie. None of my close friends knit and they do not understand the joy (and anguish) that our knitting and this community bring us. I went through a rollercoaster of emotions with the MKAL. From beyond excited to frustrated to sad to angry to creative to hopeful and then back to sad and angry. I am stitching it again and have found joy. I cried real tears when I watched Stephen's 'New Direction' update - such an amazing human he is. And then, with Clue 2 - he was back to his cheerful, positive self and I think the design is just beautiful. And all along, I kept thinking "How is Lena doing with all this???? When you didn't post, I started to genuinely worry about you. I was SO excited when I saw your video pop up today in my notifications. Bless you. And thank you - for working through emotions and landing in a positive place. BTW - I've been knitting and walking, and have been listenting to The Covenants of Water. Oh my goodness - more than a few times tears are streaming down my face. I walk a quarter mile loop around water in a hidden little trail, so I rarely run into people - thank goodness! Abraham Verghese is SUCH a good author, and an amazing narrator. I often lose count of how many loops I've walked. He retells the story as if it is happening to him. I get so lost in his voice and in the story. I would never have listened to this book without your recommendation. I still have 9 hours left to listen and I do NOT want to come to the end of this beautiful story. And I just know there are more tears in my future with this one...

It's such a chaotic juncture we are at in the world today and glad that you acknowledged this. As long as you enjoy the conversation the many who love knowing what you think and what you have on your needles, please don't stop. It would be so sad to lose your voice from the knitting podcast universe. What matters is not the outside world - how many subscribers, what algorithms dictate- but how you feel. Who you are- your sincere and authentic opinions and feelings- is what matters. Knitting is a refuge, a serene, important and happy place for me. Can we all try to keep it as a peaceful place? Grace and gentle positivity in the face of animosity and competition. Thank you for your expressing your personal feelings. I admire your ability to be vulnerable - something I would be too afraid and unable to talk about, but appreciate your sharing- it's helpful. Most important - is that 1000s of us come to enjoy spending time with you!

Thank you for sharing your projects. I really love watching your pod. You are eloquent and you really share with us more than the details about the project. I've watched quite a few podcasts over the years, and I can't think of one person that comes close to the information you provide as well as your feelings/interpretation/thoughts about the project. I think your perspective is fresh and unique to you. My sis and I have a pod as well, and believe me, you are doing much better than us, numbers wise, and we have been at it for over 4 years. The algorithm and always posting on social media I think gets you the numbers. Honestly, me personally I just can't be at it like that. We just really put KZread content out there because we love to jibber jabber about our makes, and like you don't bother with the numbers as much. I am looking forward to your next episode!

Thank you for your note Stacy. You’re so kind and generous. I’m so impressed you and your sister (how lucky you are to have each other, btw) have been at it for 4 years!! I don’t think people understand what a commitment it is! I too am not going to worry about the numbers because it robs me of my joy. Thank you for your note, it really helps to not feel alone on this side of the screen. Lots of love to you and your beautiful sister.

Leena! You have turned my knitting world upside down! It has become my happiest thing to do in life because of your podcasts. I stumbled on you last year when I was struggling with my Big Cozy Cardi, so frustrating it was taking soooo long to complete - I googled some photos and your video came up. I wait every week for you to post. Andrea Mowry was the first designer I ever knew about and listened to and met, and we love her, but your authenticity and vulnerable sharing has touched me on a deep level. I play certain parts of your podcasts with my family when you talk about what knitting means to you because you say it best. We would miss you sooo much! Like another person commented I got scared too - ha. It sounds like you’re in a good place now. If you are lead to move on at some point, please know what an impact you have had on me and so many! ❤️😘

Aw, my friend! If you’ve thought about it, don’t let all those things stop you. I hardly think they are disqualifying. I honestly think that people want a unique voice out there. I didn’t have any knitting friends either, which was a big motivator to start the podcast. I wanted other people who shared my yarn heart! So you do have a knitting friend in me. The best thing about podcasting is that you can do it exactly as your heart desires. There are no rules.

Leena I love your podcasts. You're my favorite knitting podcast to watch. Here's why, you're energetic, most podcasters are so laid back, I get bored. I've watched your podcasts repeatedly rather than go watch some laidback beige knitter. There are way too many who never use any colors, everything is beige, or gray. Yawn!!!! Please keep making your podcasts. I think you're fabulous! As for the MKAL, it's my first MKAL. I had 2 sections done in clue 1, it was small but I was so excited. Then Stephen basically turned on a dime and wanted to do anything possible to avoid hurting someone. I had to respect that. He put options for the center square on Ravelry and I really liked his test knitter Ines's design, so I'm knitting that center square. I've never done any Picot stitches and in Clue 2 there is lots of Picot. My original reason for doing this was to learn new things, and see what all the fuss/fun was about. I'm almost done with my 2nd triangle, 2 more to go and my square is done. The world is getting so stressful, I used books for escape, so I don't want any angst or reality. A good whodunit, or romantic comedy and I"m happy. I'm working on my Masters degree in Data Science and have spent the entire day fighting with my Python code trying to get it to do what I want. Not what I wanted to do on my day off. Take care and please keep the podcasts coming. I want to see your son's blanket that you've mentioned. Where did you buy your Qing Fibers yarn? I made my first purchase from Wool & Company - awesome service, free ball winding, it was so wonderful!!!

Thank you my friend! Your support and enthusiasm makes want to keep going. I appreciate you more than you know! Dang girl! Masters in Data Science!! I’m so impressed. I’m sure knitting is a much needed outlet for you to distract yourself from that! I’m glad that you are learning new things with Mr. Westknits! He makes it so fun. Do you mean the Library Blanket? I did show that at some point…when I was obsessed with Linen Quill this summer. It’s in one of those episodes. I’ve had to buy Qing from overseas which I hate. And its not the easiest yarn to work with so I really wouldn’t work with it again. Sending you love!

I enjoy hearing about your projects and your thoughts about them and love that you talk to us as if we were right there in the room with you. Thank you for being genuine, brave and open. I hope you find more joy than angst and find a healthy balance that works for you because we sure would miss you! BTW.. I definitely think something has changed or is constantly changing with the algorithms because my favorite podcasts have not been showing up in my feed. I have to search for them by name. You Tube keeps pushing a lot of new ones and other content on me instead of knitting. They do not seem to like that I only enjoy knitting content Lol. I have definitely had to type in the name of your podcast to find you and I’m subscribed to your channel!? I guess I will need to start turning on notifications. Yes, you hit the nail gratitude with guilt. I kiss my baby’s head and am grateful and guilty at the same time. She and I were on our swing’s yesterday and gratitude for the moment tinged with guilt at how easy and simple my life is compared to a mom on the other side of the world. And once you are a mother we all share a unique bond- so it’s very mixed feelings. I’m sorry about the mkal, I am not doing it so I literally have no idea what all was going on with it. I am sorry something you had so looked forward to is not turning out how you planned. Your blocks look so so good! Bravo you! Turns out you can do a quilt block 😉 I’m so sorry the pain you felt about numbers. I’m here not putting myself out- but what I would tell my daughter is be yourself, and don’t try to change to be what someone else wants. You have a solid core of people who look forward to seeing your lovely face on here. But I do totally get how it would be so hard not to tie your feelings to a number in such a vulnerable endeavor. You would be so missed if you stopped! Sending virtual hugs from Buffalo to Boulder!

Hi Lena, I'm still here in New Jersey! Still learning and listening. You and a few others are like the knitting club that I have all by myself....except it doesn't feel like I'm by myself! I had tried to upload a photo of my mountain mohair Green Mountain Spinnery stash but I couldn't. I love that stuff too. It is under rated. I am a nurse practitioner in Women's Health. I have patients all day that focus on the number they see on the scale when they check in. I tell them all day long "we are all so much more than a number on the scale or the size on the tag of your jeans". Numbers cannot define our human condition.

That is God’s work! How we all need to hear that we aren’t whatever metric we are currently obsessed with. And yay for a stash of Green Mtn!! 😍

On the MKAL, I was watching Clue 2 yesterday and feeling bad initially for Stephen West (and I hear you-I am continuing the knit, but this MKAL has gotten tangled up in my head with the war in Israel and it’s been hard to find that initial joy), then I had an epiphany. It occurred to me that (to me anyway) Stephen West is the Bob Ross of the knitting world. He makes fibre arts accessible to everyone and is such a great encouraging teacher. I wish I could send that bit if encouragement to him right now.

Just wanted to say that I have enjoyed your pods and found them very touching , insightful and fun. I wanted to share my Twists andTurns saga. I wasn't sure if I would ever finish it. But your podcast about missing your dog and your encouragement inspired me to finish. Last year there was a kit named Golden Greyhound. Since participating in the West knits MKALs my greyhound Benatar has been my model. I was so excited and ordered the kit as soon as the website opened up. Well, I waited and never received it. Fed ex lost it. In order to have it replaced Fedex had to conduct an investigation. Finally they confirmed it was lost and Stephen and Penelope could replace it at no cost but of course that color kit was sold out. I explained why that colorway was meaningful for me. They said they woul put together a kit for me. I emailed a photo of Benatar and they chose a wonderful combo. Actually better than the original. But by the time I received it I was a week behind . Half way into Clue 2 Benatar unexpectedly passed away. I just couldn't continue. But your beautiful FO inspired me to finish. I am so glad I did. I think it is really beautiful. My impression with my colorway is a sort of Victorian Steampunk look and it makes me fondly remember Benatar. Knowing that you are insightful and are an empathetic person, I wondered how you were dealing with this year's controversy. I used stash yarn but literally cried for days . It still bring tears to my eyes. But after frogging 5 times and watching Stephen's last video, I decided what to do. It is my heart project. I'm not going to rush. If it takes me a year that is fine. Like you said with all that is going on in the world knitting should be our place of joy. We all have really been on an emotional journey and self reflection. Looking forward to seeing your progress on the Cardigan. I ordered an advent that I plan to use for it. You bring a lot joy and thoughtfulness with you pods. Hope to see you again soon.

And what a kind and thoughtful way for Stephen and Penelope to respond in that time as well. Speaks so much to who he is and what he has built.

Your hat with the Icord 💕 so good. Then omg the next hat 💪🏻 I don’t wear hats but oh my…. might be a convert 😆 I have a few personalities inside me so I loved both 🤣 It’s my second MKAL and I got most of the way through clue one before I heard about the issue. Didn’t see it personally. Then insert Israel and I just lost it 😢 There was no joy, my heart was breaking and life became so heavy. I stopped and wasn’t sure if I was going to continue but then yesterday I saw clue 2 so started again, old clue one (that I modified) has been completely discarded and the joy is back again as I start afresh. Summer is my season so today, it’s spring where I live, after our long morning walk I rolled in the sand, played did some headstands, then threw myself in the (not warm enough for me yet) ocean while exhaling and letting go. We have whales at the moment so we just watched them and marveled at the beauty of Nature. I thought of you this past week and wondered how you were going as you just adore Stephen. He handled it very well. I feel the same way about knitting as you do, it is my constant companion, we are so lucky. However, when there are the odd rough periods (not often and thankfully short) I exhale and remember that this too shall pass. Negative bias is real and your description was very raw and honest. I’ve been in business for myself for almost 35 years and it has been quite the creative enterprise as I’ve had a few varied businesses over the years and it has been me putting myself out there and it has been incredibly hard at times. Rejection is real, we don’t resonate with everyone and that’s ok. It is worth the effort to go through this because when you reach the other side, the growth, self-esteem and awareness is so insightful. Social media is like a double edged sword for me so I navigate with eyes wide open. Your energy is so lovely and genuine and it shines through the screen 😊 Vulnerability is amazing, it’s a byproduct of being an aware human and life is nothing but a grand adventure 💕 Thanks for sharing, happy knitting, Karen 🇦🇺❤️🤔

I live in Australia and we will never meet but listening to you while I knit feels like catching up with a best buddy. I love your approach to knitting and living with mistakes none of my knits are perfect but I am so proud of finishing something and being able to wear it. I just finished the Arco Iris by Joji Locatelli sweater in rowan felted tweed it was beautiful to knit with. Do you know who Kaffe Fassett is, he was the Stephen West of the 80's, a true artist who painted with wool, he designs the colours for Rowan that's why the colour range is so amazing, you will see his name on the ball band. I think you would love flicking through his book Glorious Knitting if you can get your hands on a copy, maybe the library? The patterns are dated but his use of colour is incredible. You are a beautiful soul Leena just keep on being you. ❤

I truly enjoy your podcast. I found you unexpectedly but fell in love with your love of color, something I found so inspiring. I may not leave a comment every time but always send a like 💕 when you podcast. You have instantly become a personal favorite. As someone who is quite the introvert, I admire your endeavor to podcast even more. I cannot wait to see how your patchwork cardigan turns out. The last few projects I attempted were disasters but I finally found one thats held my interest. It is the Meander Vest by a newer designer Klara Pushin. You might likeit too! 😊❤

Thank you for your message Olivia, it means so much to me. Truly. And isn’t it frustrating when projects don’t click. But it does make the right pattern all the more special. That vest is GORGEOUS! It’s in my queue now! And I love always hearing about a new designer to support. ❤️

I also came across your podcast a few months ago and binge watched for weeks!! You single handedly have reignited my passion for knitting after a very long hiatus. I have courage to take on projects that I would never have even considered before- because you reminded me there is so much joy in the process ❤ Ypu introduced me to Stephen West & I joined in on the MKAL as well! Keep the videos coming, I enjoy that you are so real.

Oh Leena! I was so glad to see your podcast today. I was thinking of you a lot today and wondered how you were doing. Just want you to know, I love your heart, your passion for life, and your spirit. Thankyou for sharing with us. I am doing the MKAL this year for the first time at your urging. It has been a great lesson for me about empathy, patience, and humility. I too think Stephen West is a kind, caring, creative human being. His words about the new clue one square brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for encouraging me to do the MKAL this year. Also, I like your podcasts because I feel like you are different from many of the other podcasters - and that is what I enjoy. Simply stated, I enjoy you. 😘🤫❤️

Hey Leena! I'm happy to see you again. I hope you are well. I'm so excited to see your progress on the Heirloom Quilt Cardigan. Your colors are amazing!!! I'm actually working on the ribbing of mine as I watch this. :) And your hats! Both of them turned out so beautifully. I really like the beret turned slouchy beanie. It's very chic looking. I have been curious about your thoughts on the MKAL once everything happened. I am feeling pretty similar to you on it all. I finished my clue one but have since decided to put it to the side. I made mods to it but still feel like I will be judged harshly for my choices. So I'm going to leave it for now and see how I feel about it in a few weeks.

Hi Svannah! How are you doing? Is the hand all back to normal? Thank you for being so helpful to me with the Heirloom Cardi. You were one of my inspirations for making it to begin with! I do feel like I’m going to be working on it for quite some time. Lots of blocks to go 😉 And yes re the MKAL, I think some time and space and watching how it unfolds is what we really need right now. My knitting mojo is too fragile to do something I’m not keen on right now.

good for you for going back to that sweater and making it work for you! I am all about that and knit the same way. I am currently knitting a flat color work project in Felted Tweed and I've never caught a float in my life (and I've knit a LOT of color work!) until now. I never realized how easy it was and I'm happy with the results. I think the "experts" would agree - knit how you want to and ENJOY it!! Happy Knitting 💕 ps - that poem got me a little 🥲

I will echo some of the comments on here and say that you are one of my favorite podcasters on KZread. You’re very engaging and although I don’t know personally I would imagine that it’s easy to feel bad when you all of a sudden you’re not getting as many subscribers for whatever reason. I’ve heard that it a numbers game on here and doesn’t really mean anything. I respect you for doing this! Not that it has anything to do with knitting (although I love love all your projects and knitting talk) is that I love that you live in CO as my two grown kids live there and it makes me feel closer to them while watching your podcast and hear you talk about Boulder. I’ve been there many times as my daughter used to live there. That sounds weird I’m sure. I’m still doing the mkal as I had done a lot of knitting on it before everything went haywire. But some of my joy about it is gone. But I have hope it’ll increase as I keep on.

Thank you for your support Denise. You are so right, that we can’t know what KZread wants and rewards. I know they are trying to pivot to Shorts, and therefore want shorter content, which is definitely not my game! Now that I’ve come to terms with it, I feel like it won’t get to me as badly. So exciting that your kids live in this spectacular state!! Where are they?? It’s just the most magical place-we’ve only lived here for 3 years and I feel grateful everyday. I think you’ll get your joy back on the MKAL…I bet the final two clues are going to be ✨🌈✨

Arne & Carlos will tell you there is no such thing as color dominance. Between them and Stephen West I’m convinced knitting is not that serious and whatever we do it’s ok 😊I always look forward to your podcast and wise words, you’re my fave🥰 I’m sorry about the mkal, I know you were looking forward to it. I haven’t started yet, I loathe magic loop😂 I may do a crochet square for clue 1 🤷🏼‍♀️ I hope you enjoy your weekend

A few random thoughts - I'm beginning to feel that some knitting podcasters' egos are expanding as their subscriber numbers climb. They are starting to think that they are the definitive arbiters on who or what or how to knit - and that what they think is equal to curing cancer. Some have become so monetized that it's difficult to watch anymore. It's disheartening - especially if you can't afford what they are shilling. This is not you. Your honesty and your joy in our hobby is why I watch. Don't ever stop being you, or think it's not appreciated - it is 😊. Next thought - I, too, have decided not to continue with the MKAL. Controversy aside, after seeing Clue 2, I'm really not crazy about it. Plus, I have several Christmas knits I need to focus on - but I'm still a big Stephen fan. I did finish my Striped Esjan and LOVE it. Last thought - a Wendell Berry poem that I love, "It may be that when we no longer know what to do we have come to our real work, and that when we no longer know which way to go we have come to our real journey. The mind that is not baffled is not employed. The impeded stream is the one that sings."

I love your podcast. I don't comment often on videos but my heart pinches about the fact that many people talk only about the innocent people killed in Israel and not about the innocent people killed and that will continue to be killed in palestine as the war continues... One life taken is always one too many, no matter if it is a jewish one or a muslim one... that conflict is so old it is very difficult for me to understand it, there is so much history. I hope god relieve their pain, hunger and suffering quickly.

I don’t feel guilty because I believe God has placed each of us exactly where we should be. I do have extreme compassion for Israel, so I think all I can do now is pray for them. ❤ Love the hats! For the Pom Pom, you can put a BIG (like a 2”) button on the inside of the hat and attach to the Pom Pom. It helps keep it snug a little better. As far as the MKAL, i think many share your feelings. For me, eventho I’m not doing the MKAL, it brought back the awful memories of how the KnitMagician and Kristy Glass were dog piled on and canceled for similar things. I may be focusing too much on the cancel culture, which I hate!! I just wish people would not bend a knee to the people trying to stir up trouble. That just makes it worse and apologies never work, they will never be satisfied until you are 6 feet under. I have 12 blocks made for my Heirloom quilt cardi. Yours are more square than mine. I love you blocks. I’m like you about the floats!! I’m using unspun yarn for mine. I’m glad you’ve come to tears with pod casting! I don’t know how anybody does it. I don’t know what it is, but people are drawn to you for whatever reason. I’m sure we are very different in many ways but knitting brings us together. I wish w could all just enjoy our love of knitting. ❤

Thank you for your message! I agree that voices on the internet can get very amplified and things can quickly spin out of control. I thought SW did such a graceful job of pivoting and attempting to control the narrative. I think my squares looked square because I aggressively blocked and pinned them out! And I couldn’t agree more-this world would be a lot more tolerable if we could respect both our differences and our similarities. Lots of love to you ❤️

So… why are you even trying to mesure your « success »? If the answer is « because I would like this channel to provide a new source of income for me » then I highly suggest giving your next video this title :“how my knitting almost got me divorced” or “sex life of the knitter”. You could also share some tips on knitting in the nude next time so the algorithme gives you a boost ^^ BUT if you can decide that I, a humble viewer, am enough for you. That this community is enough for you then I think you’ll be fine.we love you. I absolutely love all your podcasts and adore when KZread tells me you posted something. I don’t watch a lot of stuff on this plateform because few people bring me joy. But you bring me joy (and great book recommendations 😊). Hope to watch you soon!
