I WISH they aged up the characters so it could be like Mary is college age and Joey is a guest teacher at his hometown dance school. There's no real reason why Mary and Joey have to be high schoolers. Just say Mary is stuck living with her evil stepmom and stepsisters because living in LA or New York is expensive af, and they keep her around for free labor. Joey is back in town to get back to his roots and teach a dance class, and y'know whatever side plot was going on with him and Jane Lynch's character. He and Mary go to some kind of Halloween party, dance, she drops her Zune when she leaves. He puts up flyers and radio ads to find his mysterious "princess". Not just a whole high school of girls show up claiming to be her, but a whole ass city. Every woman and probably some drag queens in the city shows up. Imagine the chaos. Even if you filter out anyone who's not her approximate height, age, skintone, hair color, and body shape, it's still a ton of girls and the only clue he has is a Zune. Yadda yadda, everything else is the same except I'm not wondering what a full grown man is doing with this minor, and the prize at the end is a full ride scholarship to Julliard. They ride off with the sunset behind them and he mentions he's got a place in Manhattan, it's kind of like a castle. And bam, you got a movie.

OKAY but we have to admit that lots of Disney shows and movies tried to feed us these guys that were "crazy talented" but their dancing was honestly kind of weird and not that good, and DREW SEELEY was the most talented in that respect (at least in this movie). Also he was the original voice of Troy Bolton. He's kind of an iconic Disney staple, definitely really talented, and it's kind of sad that he never got to shine outside of Disney.
