Annoying Aliens

Ғылым және технология

Fictional portrayals of alien invasion or reports of alien sightings and abductions often imply motives which on inspection make little sense... unless perhaps the true purpose was mischief.

I’m not going to lie, I’d definitely pull a “no one will ever believe you” type prank like that. After a little bit tho, I’d feel bad about how that’s gonna affect his life, so I’d come back towards the end of their lives and tell them the truth, offer to extend their natural life and bring them with me back to my people, acclimated along the way. I think I’d do it pretty often if It was just me going around making a fucked up joke no one would ever take seriously, and If you can take finding out you were right the whole time and why I did it, you join the ever growing community of the very few who could have their existence shattered and be shunned for telling people. Then have the mf who did it come back and say “ it’s just jokes bro, if you want I’ll give you a direct place in my greater society ahead Of your entire race.” (With proof of course) And decide they trust me or want anything to do with my god powers for ruining their lives. I’d offer whatever they wanted otherwise, but the main goal is this: You have an absurdist sense of humor. You seek out others of the same type generally speaking across species, then fucking with people in ever more absurd ways that they either notice more and can be proven less easily or in bigger ways that only happen in isolation. If it ends up needing the whole “no one will ever believe you” to get the sufficient lmao from me, I offer tell them the punchline and essentially heaven if they want it It would be funny if the idea of a trickster god actually just being an alien who just likes fucking with people and rewards you essentially for your ability to take a joke. Imagine how someone might become a being like That. I know how I could, but I’d need to change a lot about my own ethics to do it more than once every 50 intelligent species I see.

As far as aliens which eat humans, if more fantasy is allowed, I got to go with the demons from The Promised Neverland. Spoilers for the first season and minor spoilers for the later manga ahead. Demons have an interesting ability to mimic animals that they eat. For example, a demon which ate tigers may grow claws and teeth, cat like ears, and that cat-like grace and strength tigers have. If they ate horses, they could get hooves, longer legs, and endurance. The two problems are that they must keep eating that animal to keep those features and demons are not inherently sapient. So, by eating humans, they are able to gain self-awareness and a human level intelligence, but if they do not eat humans for long enough they will devolve into beasts. While most demons live off of factory farmed humans that grow faster than normal to maximize output, the nobility has access to "free-range organic" human meat. The obvious parallel would be wagyu beef. Those are raised in an orphanage not knowing about the world around them. The children are constantly forced to study and take standardized tests to weed out the geniuses, which are only kept until they are 12 years old. The other children are "adopted" before then. This is because the smarter the human, the higher quality their meat is considering that is why demons have to eat humans.

And they gave the Asgard an enemy to worry about so they didn't have the means to constantly come to the help of puny humans. Similarly, the Tollans learned their lesson about helping others when it cost them their planet and the Ori were kept at bay by the ancients. The wraith not simply cloning humans can be explained through even the super smart Asgard having problems with deteriorating clones. Something that would probably spoil the taste of humans for the wraith. Who would go for sloppy joes when a kobe steak is just as available and cheaper so to say. It's not like the wraith had a reason to worry about what their food might do anyway. While there are plenty of questionable things left, at least the writers did their best to make it somewhat sensible. It's not easy to write bad guys who are smart enough to be thousands of years ahead of you technology wise, yest are still dumb enough to be beaten by the puny huuwmons.

The Goa'uld are parasitic. When they take a host, they still are motivated to parasitic action. It's a base motivation of the species. The Tok'ra are the offshoot that realizes they don't need to be that way. It provides an avenue of allegory to discuss touchy real world topics. But it's also logical and internally consistent. They find a thing that is useful and use it. They can eventually make it better or more suited for their purpose, but they very rarely, if ever, make something new.

  • @roepi

The Ferengi are probably the least bad species in trek. Think about it: they don't start wars, they don't keep or trade slaves (even they draw the line there, which can't be said of the orions, klingons, and romulans), they do their very best to respect the cultural values and habits of others, especially when they are on those others territory. Sure, they are greedy but overall as a species they aren't voilent or actually offensive. They even go to greater lengths then the feds to avoid fighting and they are less prone to violating the prime directive then the feds are (though mostly for the practical reason that backwards civilizations just don't have anything they want). They are mostly just annoying to people who view ferengi as lesser due to their obsession with monetary wealth. I think that being pragmatic and loving a challenge are more defining traits of the ferengi then even their love of money (or more accurate: the things they can buy with that money as they believe money needs to be spent and not stocked up beyond what is needed to cover their asses). They also aren't hypocrits. They are very open and honest about who and what they are and what drives them. Everyone doing business with a ferengi knows that ferengi will try to con them in some way if they let their guard down but the ferengi also don't hide that they will try such a thing. Buyer beware indeed. They also don't seem to get all that upset when they are the victim of the con and mostly admire the well executed scheme and view it as a learning experience instead. Just try that with a klingon...

@@isaacarthurSFIA On supposed abduction. If you were to ask an anthropologist - you may get the suggestion that they were not 'aliens' but 'future humans'. Take in account evolution and moving into space and people no longer, over all needing to do a lot of stuff physically. The point that they are supposedly these 'skeleton' like beings, with really flimsy bodies and huge heads, yet in similar way parts in same areas, eyes, part to breathe, mouth, to hear... and being bipedal with two hands. Idea being that it's genetic research into past evolutionary form of us humans. I don't take that stuff very seriously, but could make better sense than some aliens, even if time travel would also be quite questionable. Still the reason, why I find it perhaps more plausible is cause those descriptions of them as beings do not even look genetically like some sort of healthy beings. Seriously - they look like skeletons with some tight leathery skin drawn over them for what they get described as. Either short or tall, but always anything but built in a manner we would never think the being was actually not about to drop dead or something. Basically the images those people who draw them - they don't show any a being who is alien enough, just some bit scary and that's cause it resembles a bit too much slightly deformed skeleton people.

The Wraith are one of my favorite pet peeve villain species of any franchise. Basically, these guys have one singular problem to their entire existence, which is that they need "life force energy" to survive, I say that this is a problem because they apparently need so much of it that they depopulate an entire galaxy every time they come out of hibernation, and they stay in hibernation for a very long time between feedings, plus there is competition between individual Wraith ships for hunting grounds. All of this means that they should have made their top priority to research a more viable food source for themselves, and we know that they have plenty of knowledge of how the process works and are even capable of reversing it if they want to. Yet we se absolutely no strides in this direction, despite having a clear self interest in coming up with something better than humans to feed on they simply do not seem to care.

The classic issue of stupidity even with the wraiths, if they need x amount of human or near human life force, than they just farm and manage relevant number of worlds. Colonize them is needed, and of course, make better feedstock, that produce more lifeforce with less resource. Heck, even manipulate the humans to survive the feeding, so instead of decades, just a few days of sleeping would be needed. the original wheat was basically wild grass, the current version is a bit more suitable for our needs, they just need basic farming and agricultural methods to solve the entire we must feed. Yes, the farmer space vampire race would be much less insidious at first.

I wish my memory worked well enough to give proper credit for this idea, but I once heard of an investigation into alien abductions and the most plausible conclusion the investigators came to was sleep paralysis. They made a really good case for this and also extrapolated that sleep paralysis could also explain some other supernatural events like those who have been attacked by demons. This idea really stuck with me, as I had been going to church every Sunday, and saying the lords prayer every day ever since I had suffered a demonic attack. I was young and never had heard of sleep paralysis before, which led me to learning a lot about sleep paralysis, and talking with others who had also been afflicted by demons and realized it probably wasn't actually demons.

Great episode. One fan theory for the Borg is that they're 'farming' the Federation. It's essentially the perfect civilization for innovation and such (a melting pot of cultures and ideas, explorer / scientific mindset, etc.). The Borg show up and light a fire under their arse, then poke their heads in every so often to sample the latest crop...

The aliens visit Earth to get out of their ship for a while mid journey to someplace else. While stretching their legs or whatever they observe an accident and intervene to improve outcomes while also trying to avoid being noticed. It is kind of like a burglar breaking into a house to steal from it but find somebody in need of help tries to get away with doing both.

13:27 With The Borg and such, I'd say an issue is that they are often defined by weaknesses as often as by strengths. In particular their assimilation is often justified by them being uncreative and sterile, their hive mind is often used to work against them, that sort of thing. You get a similar thing with some other monsters. Vampires are a fantastic example (they can have a ton of weaknesses). Other good examples would be SCP-173 (which can't attack you if you don't look at it) or the monsters from A Quiet Place (which can't attack you if you're quiet)

The problem with trying to come up with reasons why Aliens might do X,Y, and Z, is that you would have to understand their story in order to understand the reasons. We have very little frame of reference of what that might be, and any examination of the lore behind any of it leads you down a myriad of rabbit holes that can't really lead you anywhere.

The best excuse for incompetent alien invasions was written by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle - "Footfall." I won't spoil the action or results, but this book centred on an asteroid (the "Foot") hitting the Earth - but it was not an accident, it was war. Not a planetary kill missile, just enough to seriously compromise human civilisation, allowing for invasion. The premise was that the aliens were a part of a civilisation who had lost a war back on their home planet, so had to leave it to the victors, and strike out for pastures new on a generation ship... . But the reason humans stood a chance was these aliens WERE stupid, and this was also a main premise of the book. They had evolved not as the dominant race, but as some form of pre-sentient pets (perhaps, their own records aren't clear) to an extinct precursor civilisation/species with great technology, not all of which they understood, but they had become sentient enough to discover the tech remnants and learn from it enough for space travel, but they're not really that bright giving plucky/smart humans a chance... You may not buy all of it, but it remains to me the most well thought out of any reason somewhat dumbass aliens COULD attack us, and perhaps we would stand a chance against them...

On the topic of the Daleks: What you have to remember is that The Doctor is not an ordinary man, he is a walking Outside Context Problem, the champion of time, and functionally a living God. Yes the Daleks failed to beat him, but they’ve come close several times, and few if any civilizations can say that. - If an alien race almost killed Yahweh, I wouldn’t call them weak just because he won in the end. Beyond that, you’ve gotta remember that it’s a show about time travel, so the Daleks we see come from countless different eras of their history, some much more powerful than others. The ones actually worthy of fear are the Time War Daleks, who were at least at parity with the time lords, and waged a war across the entire universe at every moment of time. -The time lords themselves being the race that invented causality, history, the web of time, and black holes, after erasing magic from the universe because it gave them headaches-, and who were demonstrated to be capable of creating a Reality bomb that would erase every reality from every point in time simultaneously. While it’s certainly true that older model Daleks (or post-apocalyptic Daleks who’s technology has reverted) can be defeated through relatively mundane means, the fact that they are capable of wiping out the very fabric of reality throughout the multiverse would have to make them at least a K5 civilization (which works with the existing canon, since the doctor once described the Time Lords as a K5 civilization, and the Time War Daleks were their equals). In the timeline where the doctor died, they were successful. Showing that he is quite literally the only thing in the universe capable of stopping them. And even then, the doctor never actually manages to stop them for good, does he? They’re like clockroaches, infesting the timeline and crawling into the walls to lay their eggs, sure you might stomp one from time to time, but they’re just going to keep coming back. So they’re basically unkillable, while simultaneously being capable if wiping out all life everywhere and everywhen. That’s not weak, the Doctor is just hella broken. That’s why he’s their Satan figure.

@@lsdave42 No, it's all I felt qualified to talk about. Ha ha. I mean, all Sci-Fi shows seem to run into this sort of issue. The baddies have to look powerful but the protagonists have to win, which erodes the appearance of power (or competence) over time. Even if they're just as powerful and scary as they're described, they just don't feel that way to the audience, no matter how it's explained away in the story. A different phenomenon along similar lines is in TNG. Warf is a stand-in as the physically strongest crewmember. (Even though Data is stronger, the Klingon Warrior looks tougher) So, every time an alien needs to seem tough/strong, the writers find an excuse for the alien to quickly take him down. Worf ends up looking terrible at his job as a result. All I "know" about Daleks is that they're slow moving, trash can shaped robots with guns that continuously try and fail to destroy Earth. Based on the above, I'm sure it's an inaccurate oversimplification, so there wasn't much I could add. I just thought it was a funny typo to have in that particular sentence.

Still pretty dumb to use humans for compute cycles. We humans suck at the kind of operations that a computer will benefit, the types of operations we are kind of good at that are aproximations and logaritmical, we are still worse than a 40 years old computer at them, and we are thousands of times more energy inefficient, the operations themselves may not use much energy, but to get that energy you have to waste so much energy than a computer is still more efficient. I just have to point out that in a computer system the weakest part of it and the most error prone is the user to see how unrealistic is for human powered computation.
