Anne Sofie von Otter - Erlkönig (with English subtitles)

Музыка

Der Erlkönig is a poem by Goethe. It depicts the death of a child assailed by a supernatural being, the Erlking or "Erlkönig" (suggesting the literal translation "alder king"). It was originally composed by Goethe as part of a 1782 ballad opera entitled Die Fischerin.
The poem begins by giving the impression that the child is simply dying from a vague, unspecified ailment and sees death as a figment of his imagination. As it proceeds, the poem takes an ever darker twist and ends with the child's death.

the father's voice is low and gruff, the elf king is high and musical and ominously sweet, and the child's is slow and sleepy, growing into shrill with terror. What a great way of expressing emotions in music.

Superb, fantastic. Look at Anne Sofie emotions. Her voice, her face. It's a great interpretation. She is a real master and it is a masterpiece - a real pearl of music.

An incredible performance! Like Callas, she's an expert in manipulating vocal color and vocal weight, as well as tempo (i.e. rubato). The result is magnificent. What a nail-biting reading. Thank you for uploading this with English subtitles. There's something unspeakably horrific about the Erlkonig reaching desirously for the young boy. I shiver every time I hear that phrase in the music.

I saw this video for the first time in my music appreciation class and was in awe. The story, her voice, and the instruments gave me chills. This blows away everything on the radio...

I love this version as well as Sarah Brightman's "Figlio Perduto" which was based on the poem. This one has more a feeling of urgency and emotion, as if actually riding on the horse, whereas Brightman's is more enchanting. I love it.

Anne-Sofie does not show who is talking, she IS the father, virile and sure he is right, she IS the child, terrified, trying to be heard by his father, and she is the erlking, seductive and manipulative. Unbelievable. And it sounds like the orchestra is going to eat her alive. A masterpiece.

This is the first time I’ve heard “The Erlking” sung with an orchestra playing in the background. I’m used to hearing it with a piano playing in the background. Anne Sophie put on a great and convincing performance. At times however, the orchestra drowned out her voice but that could have been something to do with the sound quality.

the english translation for : meine Töchter sollen dich warten schön, My daughters should be waiting for you I m not sure, but it s a wrong translation because warten has a doublemeaning: warten - waiting . warten - to care . the daughters of the erlking are careing at the boy
