Anne of Cleves | Not Just the Tudors

Anne of Cleves was the ‘last woman standing’ of Henry VIII’s wives and the only one buried in Westminster Abbey. How did she manage it? Was she in fact a political refugee, supported by the King? Was she a role model for her step-daughters Mary and Elizabeth? Why was her marriage to Henry doomed from the start?
In this edition of Not Just the Tudors, Professor Suzannah Lipscomb is joined by author Heather R. Darsie - editor of maidensandmanuscripts.com - whose research into Anne of Cleves casts a new light on Henry’s fourth Queen, potentially revealing a very different figure than the so-called 'Flanders Mare'.
For this episode, the Senior Producer was Elena Guthrie. It was edited by Thomas Ntinas and produced by Rob Weinberg.

This also puts an entirely new spin on why Cromwell got the axe. If Anna's marriage was a disaster on international political grounds, well, that's what Cromwell was supposed to be for! Dragging your king into a series of conflicting and damaging alliances is a good way to get killed.

If *The Private Life of Henry VIII* is to be believed, Anna was a fun person to be around. She would've been a good wife for Henry. She probably could've made him less of a douchebag.

Great episode, thank you. I must admit it always baffles me how English native speakers anglicise first names, pronouncing or even spelling them English without asking if that's the way the name is pronounced in the person's own language.

Her real name was " Anna von Kleve ", Anna spoken in a short way, not Aaaana....elongated, english version. "Von Kleve" sounds totally different than the angliciesed version, but then again, i think Catherine of Aragon sounded very different in her native spanish than in the german or english version.

I've never heard the political point of view of their annulment, or what was happening internationally at the time. Very compelling and falls in line with other things I've heard.

What a fascinating conversation between two of my favourite historians. I have read Heather Darsie's book - I highly recommend it - full of new insight and very readable!

I've listened to Heather Darcy before, and what you're hearing is the German side of history, not the British fabrications
