As much as I love Kiera Knighley, no one can top Sophie Marceau as Anna. Not only is she beautiful, but she has a gentleness and sadness in her eyes that you really sympathize with. She is the Anna of the book.

Yes, Kiera Knightley is a very good actress for like Jane Austen, etc. But not this role. They are like a pair of teenagers. The best is Kitty. Also no esthetic beauty neither in clothes. And the 20th C.Shostakovich waltz is beautiful but does not fit the 19th C.atmosphere.neither the dancing.

I like them both. Knightly is the more vibrant charismatic presence but Marceau captures the melancholy side of Anna better and packs a bigger emotional punch towards the end when her character descends into depression.

I disagree. Keira is a more sophisticated, and more mature Anna. Joe Wright also took a lot of risks taking on a classical novel with so many remakes, and turn it into almost theatrical performance with over-the-top costumes, dancing and decor. Very few actresses would have been able to pull it with a script like the one Knightley worked with and she remains the top tier actress throughout her performance as Anna, essentially making the movie. Knightley is less of an eye candy than Marceau, and her performance has depth and maturity, which none of Marceau films matches. Of course for general audiences, Marceau may even be preferable as Anna. For people with acting background Keira is the undisputed winner.

It would be even better if Mr Bean didn’t skip through the steps in the waltz, he should be a lot smoother gliding through his steps rather than skipping (jumpy)

Sophie Marceau was a beautiful and tragic Anna, but Mia Kirshner was a brilliant choice for Kitty too - radiance and superiority of a newly introduced beauty in high society, the way she was genuinly stunned then hurt by Vronsky's ir preference of an older woman. The incomprehension - she acted so well!

The best of all the Anna Karenina movies .And the best Anna. Sophie Marceau is exquisite, so lovely and Sean Bean did very well as Vronski. So beautiful being filmed on location in the splendour of St.Petersburg.And Tchaikovski music, the choreography of this waltz is marvellous. Also most beautiful clothes, some like from Renoir paintings.much attention to detail.bravo to all that have participated to make this unique movie.

2012 has more scenes from the book and Anna is portrayed more lively and strong-willed but 1997 has the more ruggedly handsome and charismatic Vronsky and we feel the tragedy of Anna’s demise more strongly. If the scene where he rushes to the woodshed doesn’t make you cry, I don’t know what would.

😫i just wanna write a fanfic sequel where Vronksy returns from war, heals, finds a woman who isn’t already married, falls in love with her, and she can be the object of his intense and passionate affection and they both heal, grow, learn, and start a family🥰😭 the look on his face when he goes off to war is just devastating! Yes he made a mistake by pursuing a married woman. I think if he really loved her he would’ve waited for her older husband to pass away and for her to heal and then pursue her. But he obviously has so much love to give if he could just give it to his true soulmate!
