She was plagued by injuries up until late last year then she got a lot fitter, the injuries stopped and she started playing like a different player.

Kalinskaya's found the trick to beating Rybakina - just stand far back from the baseline and let her ball drop before hitting. On a day when her 1st serve is not firing, Rybakina is much more beatable than people think.

gosh it was just a month ago that Elena was never going to lose again...Unreasonable expectations from folks who know nothing about sports, let alone the WTA.

A surprising result.

The umpire did a horrible job with this match. First he didn’t want Kalinskaya to challenge a ball that was out, even if it was too late for her to challenge he should’ve seen that the ball went out because it happened right in front of him. Secondly Rybakina served and the out call only came after Kalinskaya hit the ball out of bounds. When Rybakina challenged the ball, it was in, he then ruled it as a first serve meaning Elena had to serve again, luckily Kalinskaya gave her the point out of good sportsmanship. Seriously what was his issue ????

The headlines after this match on the wta website state this was Kalinskaya’s third top ten win. If you are going to make a snide remark, at least be accurate. She pretty much wiped out Rybakina in the last set.

Elena lacks the movement and abilities to deal with topspin on clay. And Stuttgart/Madrid are just dusted hardcourt. Real clay begins at Rome and then Roland Garros. Every next clay tournament will benefit Iga Świątek, Barbora Krejcikova, Ons Jabeur and mid-class clay court players like Martina Trevisan etc, more and more. Every next clay tournament, Elena Rybakina will have more and more problems. Sabalenka is unknown. She's good in Stuttgart/Madrid/Rome, but never at Roland Garros. She may have a big breakthrough in 2023 like a semifinal/final. She has a power to tear through 95% of players, but she loses to the movement, power, topspin and speed of Iga Świątek on clay. We will see.

If Saba couldn't win Porsche in Stuttgart, she won't win in Rome or Paris. As you said, late clay events are even better for clay courters than, let's say, Charleston or Stuttgart tournaments (which are not real clay).

Well she reached the QF at RG who’s to say a player of her calibre can’t go further in the tournament? Her serve isn’t neutralised on the clay she got a couple of aces today, it’s as if people are forgetting she’s just coming back from a lower back injury, one which caused her to withdraw from Stuttgart. That kind of injury has major effects on the serve Motion let alone her ground strokes. If 100% healthy she stands a great chance at doing well for the rest of the clay court season.

Not her best surface for sure but it's not a spin issue. Her movement is not there, perhaps she still not 100%. That being said, clay always favors baseline play and neutralizes her serve and powerful ground strokes. It was a conscious decision by the tour to move to slower surfaces (which is why grass season has been shortened) and the hard courts have become so slow.

Quite impressed by Kalinskaya clean ground strokes and very decent serves. Her win helped by too many UF errors from Rybakina this time.

What I see is that Elena is not ready to play on the clay court...just like when she played in Stuttgart. Is it too tired or is there an injury that interferes with the game and fails to perform well? I suggest that Elena withdraw from the Rome Masters tournament. Elena needs to rest for a while...in the meantime focus on strengthening her mental and physical health. When returning to action at Roland Garros later with more confidence, fitter and stronger in all aspects. All the best Elena...💪💪💪

I'm not buying this whole "injury" thing. If she's injured, she shouldn't be playing. Simple as that. I see two factors here: clay is not her surface cos heavy hitting is not enough which shows how one dimensional her game is; and 2 - the girl is tired and needs a proper rest. I don't know who's making decisions in her team but they really need to rethink their approach or she'll be out of tour in a year or two due to injuries.

I'm a fan of Elena but I saw this coming. Anna was up for the match and Elena was not. Gtrat impressive win for Anna. Keep your eye on her.

Congrats Anna. Anna had been playing Elena in the youth she read the games well as in the IW Elena had a tough time.Hopefully Vukov can give Elena more shots variations practices ie drops and break the opponent rhythm for future clay courts. Wish Elena can improve in Rome and RG❤

Congrats Anna ,Elena games is great on hard court and grass where clay is slower suitable for slow but precise returns . She should have a clay specialist who can impart inner knowledge of the craft .But is not late for Elena to polish up and maybe one day she can master the technique. Anyway she is still my fav player on tour with her calm composure and beauty.❤

I’m only surprised at the 3rd set…I had a feeling it would be a battle considering she was able to make Ryb uneasy on hard court

Есть пункт в договоре где указывается тот факт что спортсмен играющий против бывшего соотечественника должен уступить ему. Теннис это единственный в мире спорт где не бывает случайностей, всегда топы в финале. Без обид Калинская хороший игрок но не в топе. Здесь Рыбакина пришла на тренировку можно сказать. До этого Касаткиной проиграла и все это указывает на тот пункт в договоре. Так что я так думаю.
