Elim Chan conducts an ensemble of Philharmonia string players in Anna Clyne’s achingly beautiful Within Her Arms. Clyne’s moving elegy, dedicated to her mother, is a meditation on grief and the search for solace.

"Achingly beautiful" is a very apt description. Such a simple motif given such depth of meaning.
I spent 12 years working in the music industry and I've been a student of classical piano my whole life. Sometime after 2005 after working on some very exciting jazz music, I gave up hope that there would be any modern classical music of any substance (excepting Arvo Parte obviously). The other day when I first heard this I wept. It is a sad shame we live in a world where songs like this don't sell millions of copies as they once did. It is nothing short of breath-taking. Quite beside myself.

I've been trying to find this to buy it.
Composed for her mother who went through an illness as far as I can tell. The caressing opening motive is interrupted by the empty silence (perhaps at the realization of the sad news ) and subsequently the broken motivic expansion of her mother’s caressing. The next silence is followed by a deep and sudden realization of the fact that it is her memories, recollections and heartfelt affection that will endure in this very touching and dramatic work.
