I did too! I thought it was one of the best books I've read, and hearing it narrated by Tom Hanks, added such a warmth and depth to it,! I listen to books when I walk in the morning, and I didn't want this book to end!! I will think about this story and characters for long after I've finished it. I'm part of a monthly book club, and if I can, I'll select it for my month.

Just finished this book. Not sure how I feel about the ending. But I love the way the characters of Danny and Maeve are revealed.

I love Ann Patchett but this book felt a little flat to me. Like Anne Tyler, another writer I love, she seems to be going through a dryish period. She is crazy talented but everyone has their better work and their lesser work. This feels like a lesser work.

I have had that experience with one or two of her other books, but I've come to think it's more me than her. Just not the right book for me, at the time I picked it up. I felt that way about Commonwealth. But The Dutch House is extraordinary.

@@saraglennon4075 I agree. I thought it was an amazing story, and so incredibly well written. I can just envisage Maeve and Danny sitting in the various cars over the years, smoking cigarettes (Yuck!) and brooding over the house that was so mercilessly taken away from them. I thought it was an incredible book/story. I listened to the audiobook version, narrated by Tom Hanks, and it added so much to the narrative! It made you feel like Danny, himself, was telling you the story.

I’m glad someone else felt this way. I heard so many amazing reviews about this book so I went for it. I found myself not excited to jump back into the story every time I paused. I didn’t feel connected to the characters. I didn’t feel inspired, changed or moved by them or the story! I did like a comment below saying it could be the reader or the time wasn’t right to read it! Or it could be that we just didn’t connect with this book like a lot of other people seem to have connected with it! Nothing wrong with that :)

I've never read this author before, but I absolutely loved this book. May have been the time in my life, my Mother z"l passed away three weeks ago and I just went back and spent two weeks with my sister - the longest period since I moved to Asia 23 years ago - but I thought this book was absolutely amazing.
