Ankylosing Spondylitis and Chiropractic Care: What You Need to Know

In this eye-opening video, we delve into the complexities of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a form of arthritis that leads to severe pain and potentially permanent fusion of the spine.
Despite the allure of chiropractic adjustments offering relief for back pain, this video uncovers why these treatments can be especially hazardous for individuals with AS.
Highlighting the chronic inflammation and irreversible bone fusion characteristic of AS, we explain the scientific rationale behind the strict recommendations against chiropractic spinal adjustments for those affected by this condition.
Through expert insights, we explore the lack of evidence supporting chiropractic efficacy in managing AS's underlying issues and the significant risks involved, including fractures or dislocations in the fused spine and neck.
Emphasizing the importance of MRI in identifying critical complications, such as cervical fractures and potentially fatal epidural bleeds, our video is a must-watch for anyone seeking safe and effective pain management strategies for ankylosing spondylitis.
Discover why informed healthcare decisions are crucial and learn about the safer therapeutic options available to manage symptoms and improve quality of life without risking spinal cord injuries or fractures.

The problem with a lot of chiropractic videos on KZread is that it makes chiropractic look like an extreme sport. With titles such as "This popped SO LOUD!" makes it sound like the cavitation is the Hollywood adjustment that cures everything. In reality the popping sound is clinically insignificant. As a Chiropractor myself, of course I'm biased, but chiro care can be life changing for some people when used appropriately. These videos which are all about the pops and clicks really grind my gears! Thanks for this video.

I agree, and most people don't realize the micraphones they set up to capture that sound. Some Chiropractiors wont ev, use those straps, unless they need the extra leverage and nevy never jump. Every one I have been to made fine adjustments. After looking at images.

I’ve had y-strap adjustments and knowing what I know now, I wish I had not had them or really had chiropractic care at all. After continuing to decline in chiropractic care, I finally saw a neurosurgeon who diagnosed degenerative disk disease. All of the manipulation I was receiving at the chiro was exacerbating my issues. I saw significant improvement with PT, lots of rest, and epidural steroid injections.

Another Chiropractor agreeing - Dr. Webb is on point here. There is no way in hell I would work on an AS patient like this. Muscle work and stretching within tolerance - sure. Manual adjusting like this - nope. I work on several elderly patients with osteoporosis and just use gentle instrument adjusting and a lot of soft tissue work. You have to tailor the treatment to the patient.

As a Chiropractor who uses manipulation frequently in my office, I completely agree with Dr. Webb. While the risks for fracture are likely fairly low, it doesn’t seem like the risk to reward ratio makes sense here. Thank you for making this video and for pointing out the risks. Agree with you Dr. Webb on the type of adjustment we see here! Chiropractors go through extensive testing and credentialing, can easily treat patients with gentle techniques and modalities such as therapeutic ultrasound and more, and can be very effective, commonly order MRI studies in such a case, make proper referrals if necessary. I'm a practicing chiro for 26 years, love your channel, and purchased your book. Appreciate the video!

I have a.s. I am in pain all the time. I have seen a primary, a rheumatologist, a chiropractor, and a physical therapist. I have had every scan and test. my bones hurt and it's difficult to walk. It seems that people either don't know how to treat this or just don't.

I have been just diagnosed with AS but also had four bone spurs removed from my spinal cord 2 years prior to the diagnosis. I can not imagine what a chiropractor would do if they adjusted an area where the bone spurs where digging into my spinal cord.

  • @MimiDidi121

I was undiagnosed for several decades, and I have severe ankylosing spondylitis. My rheumatologist caused it end stage. They don’t treat me for it all except pain medication because he says it can’t get any worse because I have so much new bone growth and so much fusion. Years ago I went to the chiropractor and he told me he wouldn’t touch me with a 10 foot pole, he said move and he could break my neck. Is that true? A few months ago, I fell in the yard and broke my tibial plateau. I am suggested to the doctors that since I’m postmenopausal and a female of course, that maybe I should have a bone scan. He just kinda looked at me like a calf, staring at a new gate! He made me feel stupid so I just shut up. Was being stupid? I was surprised I broke my tibial plateau, falling in the grass. I suggested a CT scan of my upper spine because it is completely fused and I’ve had more pain in that area than before the fall. They didn’t do that either, not even a regular x-ray to see if they could see a bone shipped away or something like that, my rheumatologist told me that anytime I fall to get a CT scan. I don’t usually do that if I am not, but he told me it wasn’t if I break my neck, but when! he told me to stop riding my bicycle not to use equipment that was automatic like a treadmill or something that could cause me to fall if anything happened. I don’t know if they’re being overly cautious. They’re not treating me with anything. I can’t take NSAIDs because of my kidneys, and they told me I was too advance for biologics prescribe me pain medication

All contributing to lateral spinal stenosis between my L3-S1 and foraminal stenosis in my Sacrum. I was going to ask if you could maybe go over what is happening to me in a video? What is the best thing I can do for pain? My appreciation would go beyond words. This whole situation has left me feeling hopeless. I have had bulging discs since I was 15 years old. I don’t understand where the stenosis came from? I have tried physical therapy, medication, and epidural steroid shots. I am afraid surgery is my next step.

Why go to a Chiropractor when you can go to and KEEP going to a physical therapist? Ya know…actually scientific based & works along side Doctors & Surgeons to make sure a patient is rehabilitated? And what people want is things to be fixed in a finger snap, physical therapy takes time and it’s hard in the beginning so people wanna throw that out. No no no! Just heard of another story of someone being paralyzed because of a chiropractor & it just doesn’t do much/anything to help with pain & symptoms. I’mma say it, Chiropractic schools should be shut down & all chiropractors need their license taken away, give them the ability to go to physical therapy school easily & let them start over.

Ask a chiropractor what they pay in malpractice insurance and then ask yourself if the insurance companies are willing to bet on paying out money for a risky treatment. Bashing an evidence based scope of practice such as chiropractic, in case you doubt you’re welcome to read through millions of case report with objective findings, showing improvements in patients and almost not existent adverse reactions. Then find the few outliers and then compare them to the data found in the allopathic world. You might not be so closed minded from there.
