I would love to see a nerdier breakdown and opening up the machine

Nathan is becoming my favorite 3D printing channel very quickly 😛 the editing is top notch extremely high quality

One thing I like about the M5C that I don't think much has been spoken about is cloud printing. Though it is at my house, I installed the software on my work computer and sent a print job to my M5C through the application, seemingly through my Ankermake account. I put a Wyze cam next to my printer to monitor it, and it is printing right now.

Nathan, I just put mine together and I am impressed that you thoughtfully provided information I can use rather than just going through the motions to get likes. I am now in a better position to understand this printer (which terrifies me, but that is another story). Well done and thank you!

This is some great looking industrial design and engineering that is typically missing on consumer level 3D printers. There is a lot of attention to detail here. I love how the cables, belts and motion control components are visually hidden and protected but the covers come off easily for access. I don't want to print from a phone app but most people want to do everything with their phones and many people don't even have a PC. The AnkerMake app looks very nice... light years better than the Creality app for their new upscale K1 series. I don't need an elaborate user interface on the 3D printer, any more than I need it on a 2D printer, but I'd greatly prefer a good web based interface similar to Klipper/Fluidd, and even better would be a standard PC interface protocol so manufacturers could allow printing from within all popular slicers. I do a lot of repeat prints for manufacturing and the double press to print the last part is genius. For PLA, PETG or TPU, this could be a good Print Farm Lite printer. I've been wanting a reprint button but none of my 3D printers has had that feature. I also love how the bed slingers just keep getting better - faster, better print quality, auto bed leveling and long term reliability. I should probably start designing new structural parts for PETG and convert my existing ABS parts so I can use a simple, inexpensive and easy to maintain unenclosed bed slinger, now that there are high end options other than Pru$a.

The standard M5 uses Marlin firmware, so this one probably does too. So I wonder if it would be possible to mod it and add a graphical LCD. It can be nice to have an onboard interface. That said, the phone app interface is pretty nice. This is one of the most clean and simple machines we’ve ever seen.

Holy crap this printer is ABSURDLY fast. Like so fast it doesn't even seem to act like a 3D printer. It's insane! It makes me wonder if it would be really hard to capture a time-lapse with this printer.

With Anker's track record of claiming unsecured, unencrypted security cameras to be encrypted, plus Anker being a Chinese company, are we gonna expect a video going over their privacy policy for the M5C and the phone app just like what we've got with BambuLab?

Good, they sent you one! I realized other people were posting videos about this. I was just hoping I'd see you post a video on it. You seem to have the most thorough tests on these machines when they come out. Not to say there aren't other people that will be brutal if need be. You just do it the best for regular people that just want to know if it's for them or not.

I was skeptical about the lack of an interface outside of the phone + internet connection at first. But the more I think about it… Given that this printer is nicely suited for someone that just wants to make things and probably has younger humans running around - kids are very good at exploring unfamiliar user interfaces these days. They see a screen and they're very willing to mess with it. That can be a real issue when they're smart enough to turn everything on but too inexperienced to understand what a 3rd degree burn is. I, "smart" adult lol, have burned myself a good few times. Just a thought. You know, 3D printers are not very interesting to kids when they can't figure out how to turn them on. This is good.

I've learned about PTFE tube the hard way - I was following PETG settings recommended by AnkerMake slicer (260C), so, it ended in show off meltdown destroying my hotend. : D Tbh my feelings about this printer are extremely mixed.

For normal pla/petg printing and excluding the build volume, would you recommend the Ankermake M5(-c) or the Bambulab X1(-c)? After all both M5c and X1c are just as reliable, right?

I imagine this will be more reliable and easier to service. Bedslingers are inherently easier to work on since the mechanical parts are all easy to access. X1C has way more advanced features, slicer, and UI. But for banging out parts this would be a good choice and is significantly cheaper

The pre prepared models is very limiting. You need the slicer. Having said that the Anker slicer is very smart and dialled in and very simple to use, much better than relying on their presliced files. Only downside I can see is there is no screen and if you lose Wi-Fi you cannot print anything. Nice price though and for the money appears to be rather good.

What no screen on the gantry? How can this ever be good😂 awesome video bro

Is the app able to queue up print jobs? Does it notify you when the print is done? Seems like a nice solid machine for the price.

There are 5 ways to start a print: 1) Click the item you want to print in the explore tab. It requires internet access, but will download and execute a precompiled gcode file. 2) click the item you want to print in the app. You can browse your own sliced files that are stored on a usb drive or that are stored locally on the machine. The phone app connection automatically defaults to Bluetooth if it has no internet connection. 3) press play once to print the most recent gcode file 4) double-press play to restart the last print job you ran 5) some stuff through the slicer Basically any workflow I wanted to do was supported. Still wouldn’t use it for proprietary and private models, but for kids toys and stuff for around the house you can just click to print

The easiest and best way to feed filament with a direct extruder is when the spool is in the middle at the top and then the filament goes down without needing to be guided in a tube. I will never understand how anyone could be serious about this. This M5C already has a better filament position, but the guide tube still kills it. How many tries (printers) will it take for the AnkerMake to center the spool and remove the guide tube like everyone else does? :-)

It's pretty neat but i gotta say to leverage a 3D printer to its max potential you'd want to have CAD skills which aren't super easy to pick up, even using tinkercad, Ankermake seems to be taking a direct shot at Prusa. I think people with a low budget would still go cheap entry level bedslingers and those who are more serious would most likely get a bambulab, the hobbyists are gonna build vorons or even their own custom designs regardless

Right, with Printables you can directly download GCode, which is a really awesome feature. Anker is taking it 1 step further and building the gcode download/print start into a single button press on the app. Pretty smart way to let beginners into 3D printing. Totally agree that more serious people will probably want to use a bambu lab or Voron as you described. And for broke ppl, an Ender 3 clone like the Neptune 4 would do well

This is a very cool looking machine, I’d say it’s on par looks wise with the creality k1 both are great looking machines in my opinion :)

FYI their app is one thing, however they’ve thankfully killed off their AnkerMake Slicer and have gone with PrusaSlicer. I have the M5, and their Anker slicer (which they killed off) works OK with my Mac but doesn’t allow for sending files to nor monitoring print jobs. On my PC those features work and am able to send from PC to M5. Will be interesting to see if, they continue to support their app and if they’ll interface to Prusa slicer or? *STill waiting on the V6 color engine… I really hope they don’t just push out machines and decide it was too much to handle as their customer support is very, very lacking

@@NathanBuildsRobots Looks like Anker isn't selling any replacement parts except for consumables on their website (except nozzles and hotends), so the magic smoke must be stored in a 1 way valve, and after its gone, out the window the printer goes! You know Its what I like about apple stuff the most, not having to go though the hassle of fixing stuff...just have little kids in the 3rd world take apart and burn your devices for expensive metals(i.e. Recycle!!)

Depends - if you want to do anything technical I’d I’d go for the Neptune 4 (non-pro) IMO the pro model doesn’t actually add anything to the overall package. Delrin wheels are fine and cheaper - they are actually better than metal wheels in a few ways. This is a machine I’d reccomend to someone who just wants to click to print parts out of a catalog. The fact that I can print without having to use a slicer at all is so nice for non-technical people. But the Neptune has all sorts of stats you can look at while printing, you can use whatever slicer you want, and it has a moddable architecture for if you want to do weird upgrades and customizations. Ankermake is a consumer grade plug and play with minimal thinking, but also I could see it being useful in print farm applications for mass producing the same part over and over again. It’s got a high quality build and for doing repetitive prints, you don’t really need a UI.

I will be extremely down to the point, there are exceptions to the below, but this is the gist: Anker($399): No fuss, just print, get if you want zero hassle printing, but no tinkering, high chance of throwing away when it breaks(no parts except consumables for sale), app centric, basically like a paper printer Elegoo($299): Extremely configurable and upgradable, compatible with almost any slicer, fix with easily available parts if it breaks, get if you want to learn alot about 3d printing Both: Reliable, fast, but they are bed slingers....Get a Bambu P1S($699) if you want it all, and can buy once cry once (enclosed if you want to print ABS/ASA/PC in the future), but it comes with an "It all" price (relatively).

Fair warning - check for a small PTFE tube inside…. I have the M5, and it too was/is said to be “an all metal hot end” however there’s a small PTFE tube inside - oops. Just check first

Sorry, I should do a modding video on this printer 😊 It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense IMO… since this is just supposed to be a budget plug and play printer… but when has that ever stopped me? It might make a siiick print farm bot if you had a fleet of these with a high flow nozzles. Would probably take them off the cloud and have USB drives with 1 gcode loaded into them, with a picture of the print stickered onto the drive. So you plug in what you want to print then hit the play button, 100% offline Part cooling, bed leveling, and overall precision are really good on this machine.

Exactly. Great printer for dad that wants to print his kids some toys, and maybe show them how to start their own prints. There’s no way in hell the average 5 year old is going to be able to figure out prusaslicer, but throw a tablet in there hands and ask them “DO YOU WANT A SHARKY SHARK, OR A TREEEEE?” and they’ll be able to have their first experience finding something they like, and starting a print. If your a college engineering student or a hardcore hobbyist, I think the more involved process of slicing and tuning your printer is fine, even preferable, to the simpler UI this offers. I think AnkerMake are adding value by opening up new markets/customers with their simplistic approach, and I kind of appreciate it.

They don't care much for the slicing and stuff 😉 I've been looking for a printer my brother could use cause he is computer illiterate. This is now at the top of my list 👍

I'm surprised you didn't cover their desktop slicer. Their hardware on the m5 has been ok-ish, but cura based slicer is really bad. A bad bit about the actual performance vs reality at least on the m5 is that the advertised speed capabilities and actual decent print quality have a big delta. With PETG you are working speeds as low as 60mm/s. AFter some time using, lots of their functions just aren't congruent with normal 3D printing practices. IMO these are electronics gurus making a 3D printer, not a 3D printing guru making a 3D printer.

Lol had to google that, but I think that was the Linus Tech Tips thing where he was all upset. Also Sanladerer and CNC Kitchen talked about it. Well, you can hold a grudge forever if you want. This machine doesn't have a webcam on it.

a bit disappointed tbh. It got an all metal hotend, yet i only see prints in white PLA. No TPU, no ASA, no colors. From what i've seen, i can't even tell if you can define the filament type within this app. And given the slicer: it was often said that it came out terribly buggy with the regular M5. So at least one or two looks into the current state of it for the M5C would've been quite nice. I get that thay really, really want to push this app for usage, but let's be honest: content wise it will be equally great to the Creality cloud. So if you want to print sth that's not ripped from the Thingiverse startpage, you'll have to use a slicer.

I was using a beta build of the app that had support for the M5C. Parts sliced I. Prusaslicer gcode errored out half of the time, so I think there is something that needs to be done in the start gcode. But once someone sorts that out (I’m too lazy/occupied with other things) I’d love to revisit this machine and do some TPU and PETG prints. I just can be bothered to use anything but PRUSA Slicer these days. I just want a slicer that works and makes sense to me, not a new fork of Cura for every machine I use

But i still can't see any benefits for me over using stock PrusaSlicer 2.6 right now. But given that there's already working PrusaSlicer profiles for the M5 around, it shouldn't take too long for this one to join the club.

Probably, but given the target audience and their intended workflow (download app, click on parts you want to print) I don’t really see it as a problem. I only dislike bambu lab for coming out with a printer that steals IP… WHILE ALSO advertising themselves as the perfect printer for printing engineering grade materials. Reeked of a honeypot.

bambu does not force cloud. none of my machines are connected to wifi. ill connect to do firmware updates then turn it off. you can slice and export to sd cards like any other printers well.

It’s not for everyone. Hardcore hobbyists and people with an appetite for technical mumbo jumbo will prefer a klipper interface so you can stare at graphs, code, and rapidly changing numbers
