Anker Soundcore Motion Plus Best EQ - as of firmware 39.39 vs JBL Charge 5 👍

Ойын-сауық

Anker Soundcore Motion Plus EQ settings for custom mode. These are my current settings on firmware 39.39. Keep in mind all three of my motion pluses sound different and very likely your does too. Take this as a starting point for a neutral sound although we have to push the upper bass (150hz slider) to make up for problems in the deeper and upper bass elsewhere. I will compare it to the JBL Charge5 as a reference point.

Alan Ross Reviews Top Picks:
Pound for pound world champion:
Soundcore Motion Boom: geni.us/motionboom
Amazingly deep bass to 40hz for its size and price.
For a leaner more agile sound with seven more deep bass for the same price try the Mifa Wildbox
Still worth a look:
My former world champ the Soundcore Motion Plus can still offer great clarity.
geni.us/soundcoremotionplus
£50 champion:
Great bass for its size, Soundcore Boost: geni.us/soundcoreboost
A little bigger but a decent listen for full body sound at a decent price ($50) BOGASING M4 (some distortion issues): geni.us/bogasingm4
Bass Heavy Speakers:
Harman Kardon Go+ (mid and upper bass heavy but with decent balance): Play geni.us/goplay
Onyx Studio 6 (warmer than the 7, maybe too bass heavy in balance): geni.us/onyxstudio6
Bag of Riddim 2: not much deep bass but dollops of mid and upper bass help to give a warm and open sound. A good fun listen but not so accurate in reproduction. geni.us/bagofriddim
Hi End Picks
Minirig mk3 2.2 system: geni.us/minirigmk3
Great for portable low deep kick: Onyx Studio 6 (more bass than Onyx 7): geni.us/onyxstudio6
Monitor Like openess and neutrality but lacks deep bass Audio Pro C3: geni.us/audioproc3
Travel Speakers:
Marshall Stockwell 2: geni.us/stockwell2
offers a decent immersive sound with full and tight bass. Beware though it does not go very loud
JBL Charge 5: geni.us/jblcharge5
Only mono but has a very clear and dynamic sound at low volumes and can go reasonably loud but will become a little screechy over 80%.
Bose Soundlink Flex: geni.us/bosesoundlinkflex good bass heavy sound for its compact travel friendly size.
Denon 250bt, no longer made but sets the standard for size/quality ratio for travel (battery drain issues)
JBL Flip 6: geni.us/jblflip6 louder than the Bose Soundlink Flex and has better highs (though too much, bit harsh) but not as full sounding as the Flex.
Beosound A1 1st gen: sounds better than 2nd gen and goes louder but has app, connectivity and battery issues. Very deep bass for small size and clearer than the Bose Flex. geni.us/a1gen1
Best Mini/Micro Options:
Bose Soundlink Micro (warm): geni.us/bosesoundlinkmicro
Tribit Stormbox Micro 2(clinical): geni.us/tribitmicro2
Also consider Beosound A1 1st gen (more HiFi). geni.us/a1gen1
Minirig Mini 2: geni.us/minirigmini2
Worth a Look:
W-King T9: geni.us/wkingt9
The T9 is a reasonably loud and balanced party speaker with a big bright detailed sound.
Budget Loud Boombox: no clear winner but my pick for fun outside listen would be:
W-King X10-1 for form factor and loudness geni.us/wkingx10
W-King D9 for bass with a little smoother signature: geni.us/wkingd9
Tribit Xsound Mega: medium sized mono speaker with fun bass and light show. geni.us/xsoundmega
Anker Soundcore Motion Plus best EQ settings for custom mode test :)

Bought one last week and I think they've done something about that 200-300hz dip on newer units since I find it quite muddy with the 150hz boost while the reduction you say is supposed to be flat sound very good indeed. Measuring the pink noise response with my phone seems to back that up. Wonderful work, thank you for going so in-depth.

it lost a lot of bass with 39.39 it is better not to update I have one with the previous version and another with the latest 39.39 and it leaves a lot to be desired with respect to the previous version the bad thing is that every time you enter the soundcore application it asks you if you want update and it's annoying, the option to stop seeing the update message should appear if the possibility remains in the menu. I'll see how it looks with your custom configuration on 39.39. waiting for a new update to come out because a very bad horrible update is left without bass and very shrill at 70% maximum sound give it more or joke

EQ / Tonal Balance is a personal thing, after all as you say our ears are all different, as is the way we process the sound. However, no matter what, your EQ is miles better than the default EQ setting and doing some kind of EQ is a must to properly enjoy the speaker and get the most out of it. I love your EQ setting so thank you for taking the time to work it out and publishing it, when I spend all day messing with EQ while mastering, when I'm away from the studio and just want to enjoy music, it's nice for someone to have already done it for me.

I've had the Motion+ for a few days and I love the way it sounds. More EQ adjustment bands are missing and especially one at 50hz and another at 16khz. In addition to being able to disconnect any DSP modification of the sound to leave the audio natural, without compressors or sound limiters.

Poweramp EQ is one of my favorite apps for android for a reason, the 31 band equalize which is very customizable. Works for my bigger partyboxes see no reason it would not work with small speakers like a motion+ or charge 5, although with JBL you should customize from 250Hz and up, the JBL speakers have a type of bass that cant really be adjusted well with 3rd party EQ apps. but Lower mids up to higher trebels is very fine

You are fun guy and you know your stuff. Im all for Soundcore +. But that boost 150hz makes it a bit too thuddy. JBL also reacts a bit faster, more transient. Overall sounds more refined. If the Anker app offered more frequency bands or selectable frequencies it would make it even better, but JBL sounds tight. either is a great speaker.

Curiously some time ago i slighly modified your old custom eq according to my taste and got exactly the same eq you got now lol, just with less bass (because of my small house that amplifies the bass) and less in the 12KHz because my ears are too sensitive to the higher frecuencies. Once you try the Boom the lack of deep bass is too noticeable in the M+ though :c i use it only for classic rock since that genre also lacks deep bass. Thanks for sharing this high level content for free 🔥🔥

i wouldnt use this if you are at max most of the time, i would switch to heavy eq. in theory it can have some long term effect on the longevity but i havent lost one yet and you have to expect the limiters to do their job. thats why i only do this where the eq has been made to work with the speaker. i try to keep things simple, my eq is set at 65% volume and is starting point for other volumes.

Thanks for the great (as always) review. Now I'm interested in your opinion, since now you have SEVERAL Motion Pluses. I have one Motion + and let's say I want to spend another €100. Would you recommend buying Motion Boom, or another Motion + to run both Pluses in pair? In other words, what is the difference between one and two Motion Pluses? Does the bass significantly rise?

  • @alanrossreviews

    @alanrossreviews

    2 жыл бұрын

no the thing to remember is the second one will give you about 5db more volume. the benefit is you can now play the pair at a lower volume step for the same loudness as a single plus and at lower volume it is a little more bass heavy. but adding the second outside of that benefit will not give you deeper bass. the single boom will go much deeper. so do you want deeper bass or the ability to play two pluses with a nice separated stereo soundstage.

Hi Alan, Thank you so much for the EQ suggestion. I recently purchased the Motion + and love it with your settings. Quick Question: do you know if the Stereo Pairing EQ issue has been fixed? That is, the ability to EQ each speaker, opposed to just one and the second is stuck on the flat EQ setting. I've been very interested in getting a second one for the immersive stereo experience. (currently only $80 USD on amazon right now!) Thanks again! -Nick

  • @bluetooth_speaker_junkie

To me the Charge 5 has a narrower and less impactful sound but given the deep bass its a very pleasant listen at the lower volumes. But for higher volumes no matter what it will sound shrill and electronic next to Motion + mostly because of the mono configuration which fails to deliver separate highs. As for listening to most generes the Motion + still remains a safe option over the Charge 5 except for heavy generes like metal, punk and hard rock. The sound signature on this doesn't seem to favor bass lines, kick drum which makes up most of the instruments on rock music. Other than that for any types of generes I would pick up the Motion + everyday of the week. It may not have the deep bass of the Charge 5 but its got adequate bass for most listens with a frequency response that remains more accurate to the original track. Also it has a hi-fi-ish sound signature which I favor over the JBL given the cleverly placed tweeters angled to the sides which helps giving you a better dispersion of the upper high range frequencies. In contrast the JBL has less clarity for lacking lower mids and having highs that are unnaturally boosted around 6 kHz mark, in addition having a single driver and tweeter makes it lack the crossover necessary to sperate them for higher level listening which may translate into a very electronic sound signature. Yes regarding the bass department Motion + rather has a bad reputation for performing poorly in this criteria but without a doubt I can say the new firmware makes this speaker less brittle sounding at the higher levels. At least to my hearing the Motion + is holding it's composure better across 73-85% volume when comparing to the signature from the older version of firmware. That said any average listener across the board will hear more bass after the update since the older firmware had a boomy distorted low end reproduction. One more thing I have previously tested my Motion + side by side with a generic copy of the D8 and in my experience the difference in loudness with both speakers were marginal except the D8 had a lot more bass. Given that it doesn't matter whether you are a serious listener or NOT as I assure you any average listener across the board will prefer a more powerful speaker which potentially sounds good even when cranked near to maximum.

  • @alanrossreviews

    @alanrossreviews

    2 жыл бұрын

yep! a huge amount of whether someone likes a speaker or not will depend on that bass alone, especially for the younger less trained ear. i found the d8 very cheap sounding speaker but does what it says on the box, gives a big loud bass heavy sound albeit upper bass. we all have different tastes at the end of the day but the more neutral a speaker is the more people will converge in opinion generally 🥳

Hey Alan, in the audiophile scene there are those that prefer to EQ by decreasing frequencies only and not by increasing some. Because they say that increasing bands tends to distort the sound sooner than by decreasing only. What are your thought on this, and have you tried to get the same shaped frequency curve by only decreasing bands relatively to one another?

  • @alanrossreviews

    @alanrossreviews

    2 жыл бұрын

did you watch the video? i addressed this directly. you cannot flatten the whole frequency range bringing the sliders down because it leaves peaks in between. you will also lose volume. of course we are pushing the speaker beyond limits if you are at near max but otherwise its a non issue. of course generally if you push eq you dont know if you are pushing beyond limits because of where peaks might be. safe headroom is a thing i often mention. for me you cant flatten the m+ by reducing sliders and anyway i like the extra volume and some distortion is not a deal breaker for me. there is a big difference between embedded eq and using 3rd party eq. 3rd party eq is layered eq whereas here we are working the firmware directly.

Is this true about eq adjustment: "Keep in mind that it's considered the best practice to cut or reduce frequencies instead of increasing them. This may seem counterintuitive at first since pushing the dial up results in providing more, but boosted signals can quickly erode clarity and develop unwanted distortion, which defeats the purpose of fine-tuning for the best sound. If you want to hear brighter treble in general, reduce the levels of midrange and low-end frequencies. For more bass, tone down the treble and midrange. It's all about balance and proportion." ?!? What is your opinion? Ty

That's all fine if you are mixing and sitting in front of unlimited parametric filters but this is a limited eq provided via app. Its not even a true graphic equaliser. However its made to work with the speaker itself and thus its limiters and dynamic adjustment. I dont want to given up volume and bringing sliders down leaves peaks Inbewteen the narrow sliders we have been given. Charge 5 is more travel friendly which may make it a better outdoor option but m+ can go louder

Well if you don't mind some upper bass boost, you can't get deep bass on this

Anker Firmware - is this where the ability to identify specific speakers should lie? I get tired of having two Soundcores listed on a device, but not knowing which is which.
