It got flack for the same reason most remakes do - It sucked! In this case, the original still holds up, so unless it turns out to be AMAZING, it's going to fail. We've seen this at least a dozen times but for some reason these show runners keep trying to go with "safe bets" like live action remakes which then tank immediately. Ugh.

Studio Orange is the anime studio that has been getting cg anime done right. They do such a clean job animating and marrying the characters into the environments. And it doesn't feel like they are just trying to make an anime but in cg or awkwardly sticking 3d models in with 2d animation. They have also been adapting really enjoyable series which makes it very easy to tell people to watch their stuff.

Truth is that for different people at different times of their careers, AI will affect differently. For older animators, at the top of the food chain. AI art sounds like a great way to automatically clean up/in-between frames they draw. Saving them costs and money (if they run their own studios). For someone like Alex, who is advanced in his career, but still has to do a lot of hand animation, things are differently. It's undeniable that AI animation will cut off some jobs. It may not replace an entire 3D Animation Team, but we can expect some jobs to fizzle out. How much the guests care about these jobs or not, is very rooted in how far are their careers: For a director, lead animator and other big jobs, AI is a dream come true. For people starting out in the industry, it's a nightmare.

When it comes to dark animation, I immediately think of Watership Down- there are several different styles shown in it, from the very stylised parable of El-ahrairah at the start, to Fiver's nightmare vision, to the base animation itself - its one of the few animated films in which the style is highly realistic and gritty but still expressive enough to convey character emotions.

Yeah, Land of the Lustrous was probably one of the first "fully CG" anime that managed to actually look good and started changing the perception of CG in anime. Up untill that point CG was always associated with jank and just bad animation in general although you had some shows like Ajin where the CG was actually pretty solid (hallway fight was sick), but land of the lustrous was the big turning point where alot of people started going "damn, this CG stuff can actually look really fucking good!". Another studio that does CG really well is Ufotable, not in the same way, but the way they blend their animation with CG effects makes for some of the most stunning scenes in anime, incredible art, effects and animation. They've been setting and raising the bar for what everyone else are measured against ever since Kara No Kyoukai, then with the fate series and now Demon Slayer.

I recently rewatched all of Gargoyles (for the first time since the mid-90s). I had completely forgotten that Demona had shattered multiple people on-screen in this four part episode arc. And that multiple Gargoyles from Demona’s clan (in the flashbacks scenes) were shattered on-screen as well. Much of the time anyone that is shattered is shattered off-screen (or we see the shatter happen in the shadows). Or if there ever was an on-screen shatter, it often wasn’t actually real (it was an illusion, or a dream, a fake, or whatnot). But definitely not this multi-episode arc. It’s all fully on-screen, front and center (nothing obscuring it).

I remember an episode of Ed, Edd, and Eddy that I saw as a kid that was so strange and out of place it felt like a fever dream and for a while I thought I actually dreamed it because I didn't see it aired on TV again. I think Jimmy's outline (like, the one hes drawn with) is literally peeled off of him and he floats away like a smoke cloud. And thats just one of many 4th wall breaking things that episode. Idk if that classifies as dark but maybe worth checking out.

First one that comes to mind is TMNT 2003 and Danny Phantom. These shows have at LEAST one "what if" episode and that what if is DARK. ASF. In TMNT 2003, the episode "Same as it Never Was" details Donatello, often described as the gentle, kind hearted one in this and many iterations, goes to a future where the family he knows, is quite different, and the future isn't anything to look forward to. it's important to note Donatello's disposition because THAT'S what makes this episode super fricked up. Why DONNIE of all Turtles? In Danny Phantom the episode "The Ultimate Enemy" details Danny coming face to face with his own future self,, and it along with Donatello, is also nothing to look forward to. It makes you realize how much trauma Danny goes through on day to day basis, and still manages to hold through, mostly because of his support system. But if he didn't have that support system, his grief would be all consuming. Highly recommend you react to both. The animators do a lot of fun things with shadows, and angles that make the episodes stand out. Even to this day, I'll never forget the words "Some things my boy...are better left unsaid." along with "my brothers....my poor brothers."

@@SammysapphiraHow? If you are comparing to the old anime, one: the old anime differs from the source material, and two: Tristamp's director never watched the 98 show because he wanted tristamp to use more of the source material and to honor Nightow's work in a new way, so it was already expected that the show would differ a lot from the 98 version. Personally, I liked Tristamp WAY more than Trigun 98, so to me it didnt ruin the story at all, it improved and took actual canon stuff into consideration. Gonna be honest, I gave up Trigun 98 fairly quick I hated how slow it was and how much they turned Vash into a womanizer for no reason, but that was my opinion, it doesnt mean the show is bad, it was just not my cup of tea. I like the fast paced, more darker tone of tristamp. And lets not forget the first season works as a prequel which explain many of the changes people initially complained about. All versions of the srory are great in their own way and can please different tastes, but in the end these are all the same characters that we love so much

The laser spin is also a great example of great direction. The point about "feeling himspinning the gun inside" really showas that. The build up of the cool looking spinning isn´t just there to just look cool. It directly sets up the finishing move that follows. The gun "charging" getting brighter in the colour of the beam, during the spinning trick. It directly feeds into the next event and already subconciously brings the mind to spinning the beam. The realisation of what will happen during the short build up of the laser being still directly comes from the ideas set up before. Thats how this stuff is done well. As George Lukas would say "It´s like poetry, it rymes."

Very viscerally memorable animation from my childhood: Rocko's Modern Life; the episode where they go to the baseball game; the part where the hammerhead shark gets hit in both eyes with the baseball. Jeeeezy Creezy! I will remember that slow motion animation for the rest of my life.

Animators React is the most informative of the react arcs. Love these so much. 🙌

I hope they react to JoJo part 6 and support the argument that the animation isn’t bad

You should check out Dorohedoro. It's got hand drawn backgrounds, but the characters are cg It's the most natural looking cgi I've seen so far, and the style that comes out is really unique

Note that the Dorohedoro anime was also done by MAPPA. You can see a lot of style and technique similarity between it and Chainsaw Man.

Season 3 of Reboot was an especially dark tonal shift in what had, up to that point, been a relatively light hearted show. Episode 4 of Season 3 is especially dark where some of the main characters, basically children too, were essentially given what had been seen as a death sentence before that point. One of my favourite shows of all time though. It still holds up to this day.

There's an episdoe of GI Joe called "There's No Place Like Springfield". Shipwreck falls unconscious and finds himself 6 years in the future after the war and he has a family and kids, but things aren't quiet right and he thinks he's going crazy and it turns out he's in a fake town Cobra created to extract information from him. The weird shit is that people in the simulation are made out of slime and when things go wrong they melt, and he just thinks he's loosing his mind. It ends with him trying to save his family (that he now loves) from a burning house but they just melt, and he escapes and Scarlett asks if there was anything important in the house and he stares at the burning house with tears in his eyes and says, "nothing... just a dream". STNG did the same plot a few years later called Future Imperfect.

Reboot produced some of the most disturbing nightmare fuel scenes and episodes of any "kids" show.

A lot of their choices in their “anime” inspired shorts make more sense when you realize their level of emotional investment in the style 😂

I'd really love to see the guy(s) from Fortress Films come in and talk about Source Film Maker (SFM). They released a full length movie (Emesis Blue) using the TF2 IP and had such a crazy story and amazing lighting and animation as well!
