My mentor says to always animate to the camera. If the camera doesn't see the mistakes does it really matter or is that killing the structure of the animation.

No... What If You Changed The Camera Pos lol, That Would Break The WHOLE THING! You Need To Realize To Build Your Characters, To Make Them Them, Thats The Only Way The Animation Will Have Weight To Them, Use Muscle Systems, Cloth,/Skin, Bone, Choose Solid Workflows!

some pretty silly advice to not lock down the timing until the very very end. You can't add "dirt" or the small details until timing is locked. If you change the timing, all that detail work was a big waste of time.

Actually you can change your timing after adding 'dirt' and details if you know how to work with dense data. I'd recommend you to practice working with mocap to get used to it. Another approach would be adding these details and dirtiness in another animation layer so it doesn't gets mixed up with the actual performance animation. An stupid advise would have been 'find a timing you're happy with and lock it, so if you have a better idea that will improve your animation just throw it away because you're still attached to how the animation was on earlier stages'.
