Animals as Leaders | The Woven Web - "Dat Riff" Cover + LESSON!!

Here's a cover of the slapping section in The Woven Web, otherwise known as "dat riff", along with a lesson on how to play it!
Contrary to popular belief, it's played with 7-strings, meaning you don't need an 8-string.
This was my first ever guitar lesson, so I hope you enjoy it.
Standard tuning, from low to high: BEADGBE
Played with my Black Water Guitars 7-string and Bare Knuckle Pickup Cold Sweats

was having hard time learning this, it takes a long time to get to grips with the motion, but don't get discouraged, it takes time for it to sink into the muscle memory. practice the motion on and off and in about 3 days it will start coming naturally. I was having trouble then i had a dream last night that i was playing it, woke up this morning and my finders were agreeing with me.

I've compared this lesson video to the live videos of Tosin playing it and I've noticed a few differences: - It looks like Tosin will double downstroke with his thumb for the bend not and the release; not upstroke. It looks like he goes down on the bend and comes all the way back up during the bend, not hit the release note with an up-thump. - During the 4 16th notes following the three notes after the bend are all done with the thumb. He does down slap - up thump - down slap - up thump; not down - up - index - down. - He does start the triplets with a downstroke, but he goes into the triplet following down - up - down - up. It feels awkward going into the triplet following an index stroke because of how the rhythm is obscured by hitting the release note with an upstroke. - He starts the second measure with 2 downstrokes of the thumb; not index - thumb (bend note). It took me awhile to watch what he was doing, but he begins every measure with a downstroke of the thumb. - Since he is muting all the strings except for all the accented notes, such as the open A notes, he doesn't JUST play the muted notes on the low B string. When he plays open A - triplet - open A - triplet, it's all done on the muted A string. Same with the C# - triplet. It actually changes the timbre and sounds much different. It's also easier and there isn't the added difficulty of having to string skip between the two strings, since they're muted notes anyway. - When he does the Open A - triplet, He hits the A with his ring finger and does the triplet: down - up - Index. It allows for the wrist to easily go up for the open note and down for the triplet. If none of this makes sense or I seem completely wrong, oh well :/ Trying to learn this song as well

+Zack Pollard It just seems a lot easier and economic that way. The only part that seems a bit more challenging is the double down thumb of the second measure.

  • @zackpollard6749

+Zack Pollard It is kind of awkward an uncomfortable to have your fingers close to your palm, but that's how they get to use all of their fingers for thumping. It's just another thing you have to practice. You have to practice lining all of your fingers up within the space of the strings so they're all ready to pluck when you rotate your wrist back up for the upstrokes. Such is described during the Victor Wooten bass technique vids, as well as the video of Tosin teaching at the clinic in Rockville, MD in 2012 Okay, I'm done now. My mind is empty.

+Zack Pollard Makes complete sense! I never said that my way is a 1:1 way of how to do it, I do state that do whatever is most comfortable to you! There's no wrong or right way to play the guitar, just whichever way gets you the result you want is the "right" way for you, everyone's hands and fingers are different so it's only natural :)

to peeps who struggle: It really helps if you're already comfortable with thumping.(which can be done with a straight thumb, at least i can) Go learn the intro to An Infinite Regression first if this is to tricky, just to get comfortable with all the hammer on, thumping and picking. its more intense but simpler; every note just as long and same picking for every chord. Even the first 2 chords alone is a good exercise. And as always: use metronome, have patience, play a comfortable speed. As stated there are some differences between this and Tosins vid. Only minor things tho. Its close enough. What i did was learn this first as is, not thinking about how Tosin does at all and then, when I memorized all the patterns, play his version with 0.5x speed 100000000 times from 3:20 mark. then switched to .75x and 1x once i nailed it.

The E is tuned down to D. Just watch Tosin's playthrough. You can see him tapping octaves in the opening, and both fingers are on the same fret. If it were standard tuning, his fingers would be two frets apart. The people who think it's not D have never bothered playing any part besides the thump riff.

I started with this yesterday and I noticed you have to find a certain wrist placement. I barely move my pointing and middle finger and make a turning motion with my hand. When my thumb travels back I automatically hit my pointing finger on the string. I just have to move my middle finger slighty when I have to use it. I am at the beginning but this works for me.

For the record I watched Ben Eller’s lesson about it but when I do it it lacks a bit of that spanky tone, but maybe it’s also because I can’t split my bridge pickup (I think Tosin plays this with the bridge pickup coil-tapped). I’m thinking you need a hitch-hiker thumb to play that too :)

Has anyone else had an issue with the thumping where your thumb strikes the string one the upstroke and makes it a like half-assed tapped harmonic and if so, how did you get past it? I mean it's not as much of an issue I this since it's mostly dead notes, but it sounds awful when I play an infinite regression.

+Riley Tucker Also after watching Tosin play this, I believe that when he does the opens on the A string that he actually does XX with the thumb, then goes to the E string and does a dead note with his index finger then does the open A with his middle finger. I actually found that easier to do than to skip to the A string with my thumb, but it's just preference.

Question: When you hit that first hard downstroke with your thumb, how do you keep from hitting adjacent strings and when you come back up for the upstroke, how do you make it as pronounced as the downstroke? I seem to be able get the downstroke to sound fine, but the main trouble I have is hitting that upstroke with my thumb and getting it to sound out without hitting an adjacent string. It's sort of muted when I hit it because i'm afraid of hitting the wrong string with it. This is such a nuanced technique... Any further insights will help. Thanks!

Bro did you have to use coil tap to get that tone? because i have humbuckers w/o coil tap

+Allan Joseph No coil tap, the Bare Knuckle Cold Sweats are pretty low output, so this was just between the neck and middle position

+Brian Nguyen the tone is from a high-gain amp with low gain settings, or a pushed clean tone? I've never been able to discern the tones AAL uses in their slap thingies. Anyways, thanks a lot for the lesson!

Would help to compress your tone a little bit, but only do that after you can play it, otherwise you would start to hide behind compression.

Check out my cover of The Woven Web on my channel! I asked Tosin to play this riff for me slowly at a clinic and learned it that way. Nice job Brian. The thump is done on the 7th string!

Also I know this was posted forever ago but why would you not hit the A string with your index finger rather than having to reach your thumb down? Idk if you still check comments for this but it struck my curiosity
