Definitely not my cup of tea. I find it all so unbearable boring and unlistenable. It just doesn’t move me in any way.
I listen to a ton of prog metal pretty much on the daily, and I'm able to follow most of the structure even through 7-8 minute songs. AAL's music continues to be the exception upon which my brain just switches off and doesn't even try to comprehend the dizzying onslaught of polymeters, polyrhythms, time signatures and metric modulations coming at you all at once - especially when the totality of it still grooves and blends together into deceptively ordinary sounding music.

Here's the thing though: joy of motion is imo the best album they've released. Why? Because it fucking grooves hard! madness of many and this new stuff, while incredible technically, takes things so far that it becomes a little less enjoyable - to me at least joy of motion struck that perfect balance between groove and technicality and it's the only AAL album I regularly revisit

I bet all those Gartska lovers who bought those Tama Bubinga kits 1000$ a drum are scratching their heads. The DW kit sounds great; as always. Gartska is one of the best drummers whose ever lived, across all genres. He’s playing shit only a handful of humans can play, and only 1 human can think up. A single bass drum can no longer contain the awesomeness.
His drums bring an elegance and taste to the track that might otherwise be missing. He fills holes that aren't there. He makes space. Never too much, never not enough.
Man, he is oozing with confidence with every sound he makes. So good!
2:26 this part hits hard
I like that he plays the bass drum bursts fully alternating his feet like RLR-LRL- and not RLR-RLR-. That's the most energy-efficient way to play them.
What's really awesome to me is to have the amount of will power and passion for something, to spend your life getting THIS good at it. Truly remarkable.
It is actually shocking how good a drummer he is, and the band as a whole

That's the Tama First Chair Series, domed, with no back rest. I have the hydraulic version, and it is amazing. I know a guy who claims his entire drumming career was saved with that very throne. He was suffering from severe back issues from his nightly gigs, but somehow this throne, after having tried many different ones, somehow remedied his pain. That was over ten years ago and he still gigs.

I just don't understand how drummers like Matt can memorize all these tracks that require as much precision all over the place as this and keep them straight in their head always. Must be practicing 24/7
@jacobmcdonald2907
2 жыл бұрын
I know it seems insane to be able to memorize everything so precisely. However, it's 80% (if not more) muscle memory. Yes- it requires even the best to still play multiple hours every day, but to answer your question- that's how it's done. Muscle memory and tons of practice. I started playing piano when I was 8, currently have just over 20 years of professional experience playing and composing classical music at a level I used to believe I would never achieve. It's a little hard to explain, but at the most difficult levels of playing, each song/track/piece etc. becomes just one single, fluid motion. Less thinking, more feeling.
Man this dude has progressed over the years hard to digest 👏👏👏
