Animal shelters in crisis

Комедия

U.S. animal shelters will start 2024 the most overcrowded they have been in years, according to a broad survey of animal rescue facilities, a symptom of persistent economic concern as the country’s pandemic pet-adoption boom finally cools.
There are roughly a quarter of a million more pets in animal shelters this holiday season than there were in the same period in 2022, according to Shelter Animals Count, a nonprofit that tracks unhoused pet populations.
Pet populations have continued to grow; owners skipped nearly 3 million spay or neuter surgeries in 2020 and 2021, according to research conducted by the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Shelters experienced a dramatic influx of puppies, including sought-after breeds, such as French bulldogs, or purposeful breed crosses, such as labradoodles.

    I wish more people understood the importance of spaying their animals!! Not only does it reduce the amount of animals overall, it is also, in most cases, better for your pets. Intact male dogs are more likely to show aggressive behaviours, and spaying female dogs can help prevent a lot of common cancers. Animals don’t experience ‘the joys of parenthood’, it’s just extremely traumatic for them, and completely unnecessary. I understand not everyone agrees with ‘unnecessary’ surgery, but many of the options available now are quick, easy, non invasive and far better than dealing with the alternative

    I have 3, one was an abandoned pandemic puppy that I adopted, after the owner left it in my neighborhood and drove off, but didn't even bothering to take off his collar. Called the number on the collar and the guy was telling me how it wasn't his dog, even though the collar and tag were new and I could hear him driving. Took him to the vet, saw if he was chipped and since he wasn't, I posted his picture online and took him in. He's been with us now for more than a year and gets along great with my other two rescues. It made me try harder and get a better paying job to support my three 4-legged kids.

    Neuter your animals, please 🥺 It's a myth that it's unhealthy, and that females should have at least one littler in their lifetime. Actually it might prevent your's pet mammary ridge cancer and other serious issues. Not to mention homelessness of dogs and cats. If you're not of the puppy mill kind, talk to your trusted and up-to-date educated vet during your next visit about it. Hormonal meds designed to delay heat aren't a good option either, I've seen multiple patients who suffered due to it, and a couple of others who've gotten pregnant nonetheless because of owners forgetting to administer them on time. Spaying is a safe option. All of my family pets have been through this, 8 to be exact. We never had any issues with recovery, both cats and dogs. Good luck. Pet homelessness is in our hands and we can combat the suffering by not supporting puppy mills and population control.

    I do rescue and nothing irritates me more than people thinking rescues are too strict on our adoptive guidelines. Its because we have seen 100s of homes that may look good but give the animal up very quickly for any and all reasons. I truly believe everyone should have to walk a dog or cat to the euthanasia room and witness first hand what we have when the shelters, fosters and rescues become too packed. You hold them and witness the sadness firsthand. Than maybe people won’t be so for breeding (yes even “responsible” breeding causes more animals to be euthanized bc they are direct competition for homeless pets) or to give up their dog so easily

  • @ulhi7564
    @ulhi75645 ай бұрын

    I'm probably going to catch some heat for this, but adopting a dog from a shelter is not for everyone. A dog that comes into a home should fit the needs of all members of the household. If you find a safe non aggressive dog at a shelter that you trust around your kids, then of course it can work out. But if you don't and there are vulnerable people in the house then it is part of your responsibility to the pet and everyone else to look for a good and ethical breeder, who socialises the puppies well and makes sure there are no genetical medical issues in the parent animals. There are people who have the resources to keep a rescue, but its hard and not always possible with kids in the home!! Also, spaying a dog can be a part of being a responsible pet owner, but doesn't have to be. Don't let your dog just run around without supervision, train them well and overall be aware of the responsibility you took up when you brought the dog into your home.

    Forget money, your dog is more than a financial commitment; you can't just feed them, have them groomed, and take them to the vet as needed. It's also a time and emotional commitment; they require training, walks, play, training, enrichment, and I seriously cannot stress this enough, training, especially if you insist on something like a GSD or a livestock guardian breed. Don't get a dog if you can't give it the attention it needs as well as spending the necessary money, and especially don't get a breed that is unsuitable for your temperament, living situation, and activity level. I will take any opportunity to pimp slap someone if they get a Malinois they don't train or exercise and keep in a tiny apartment, or a bulldog they take for 10 mile walks every day.

    Let's not pretend that spaying and neutering is the problem let's talk for real here. Shitty owners are the problem because you wouldn't have to spay or neuter an animal if bad owners would just not dump the dog under a fucking bridge. These people think they're being quirky and cute because they did some personality dog test on the internet and decided to go and schill out all this money to go get one without understanding what it takes to care for a dog. Just like a second job they don't quite grasp how much time it's going to eat up, so they get sick of the dog dump him.

    Spaying is a huge problem. Just because you keep it inside doesn't mean it won't escape or get mounted at the dog park. Seriously just get the animals fixed. There's no reason to have the animal die of cancer or bleed out or make unwanted babies. There's nothing cool about letting a male dog hump everything and everyone. And not a single person on earth likes a cat in heat, that is the most annoying creature on the planet.

    @@ZebraLuv there's definitely a difference between dogs and cats. Responsible dog owners, who decide not to spay, should always be aware of where their dogs are and make sure they don't produce surplus puppies. It's not that hard to keep a female dog in heat on a leash and away from other dogs. The same goes for male dogs while a female dog in heat is around. A well trained dog can easily be held in the same household with one of the opposite sex without spaying being necessary, if people are responsible. Spaying also won't necessarily help with aggression it may sometimes even lead to an increase of aggression. So maybe make sure that you take care of your dog and train it well, then spaying won't be necessary. Meanwhile, cats are a different matter altogether, after all they are much less controllable and a female cat in heat is indeed a nightmare for the owner and the cat herself

    Inflation isn't ever going to be -3%. That's just as damaging to the economy as 8% yoy inflation. It's more accurate to label lowering inflation rates as.. lowering inflation rates.
