I think peoples lack of empathy for animals they deem as "scary" or "gross" is a perfect testament to human greed and selfishness. Ever since i found out that no reptiles are covered under the animal welfare act I've felt a need to spread awareness about this issue. Everyone please take the time to come together to demand lawmakers to put these amazing animals on the AWA act!! I wonder if USARK could possibly help with this? The only way to stop people from getting away with this is to take it to court!! Make sure people have to pay for what they do.

And let’s be real here - reptile abuse happens every day within petco, petsmart, private reptile shops, and even large, well established breeders and importers. You can’t tell me the websites and shops that sell baby iguanas for $20, as well as starving wild caught animals too traumatized to eat (I’ve dealt with this first hand) and numerous other issues aren’t abuse. Why can commercial pet stores stock reptiles, birds, and rodents legally but aren’t required to hire qualified individuals to care for them? I have seen so much neglect in these stores, heard so many cases, EVEN knowing people who have worked there who do know enough who tried to improve the management. Well, it’s a problem that we as reptile and exotic pet keepers are funding, and I say we should stop. Support rescue and responsible breeders only.

I got my first ball python on 15. Kept him in a 30 gallon storage container with a heat mat, paper towel, a cut food container as a hide, and a dog water bowl. But then, I got older, I learned more, and despite the improper conditions I was lucky he never got sick. So, the more I learned, the more I improved. Why? Because once I knew what I was doing was wrong, I couldn't live with myself feeling like I was abusing my snake.

There was a time not long ago where it was considered okay for bearded to be in a 20gallon. We know differently now. But it was once considered standard care. There was a time when chameleons were considered impossible to keep in glass but with the invent of reptile specific tanks and doing away with fish tanks being the only non diy option, things change. The hobby is constantly evolving.

Can you imagine being stuffed in a tiny, dark, cold, beige, completely blank closet, your only interaction with anything is when someone yanks open your door and flings food at you? No, you'd hate it. I don't know why people think snakes would like it any better. "But they like hides" *_yeah well the difference is they can CHOOSE to leave a hide, you snake-hating conkwocket._* How can you claim to love snakes when you're so adamant on mistreating them?

I've had to downsize a bit due to time or money or mental health. It sucks but it happens and can happen to anybody. The leos I did rehome were not being neglected but they were not receiving the level of care I like to hold myself to. I made sure went to homes that would provide nothing but excellent care. The Slither Exotics/Slither Inc thing is not even remotely the same situation. Those "people" (and I use that term loosely here) abused animals to the point of straight up torture. They deserve prison for this. It isn't a case of lost passion, its a case of a straight up psychopath torturing animals thinking they could make money with it.

God I recently downsized as well. I was finding I was having a hard time keeping up with the different lizards I had in my collection, and so I rehomed all but my blue tongue skink. I still have all of my snakes however, as I find them much more rewarding and easier to care for, so they’re less of a drain on my mental state. I did however rehome two of the snakes that I felt I was starting to neglect instead of giving them the proper attention I should. Now that my life has calmed down more I may actually reach out to my friend who took one of the two snakes I rehomed and see about potentially getting her back. But I’m going to give it more time and make sure I’m in the right mindset for her to return. My friend is happy to keep looking after her until I’m ready for her again. And my other snake I rehomed went to a wonderful home where she’s going to be used in educational videos about her species.

I worked at a pet store for years. At the end I had multiple snakes, 6 running fish tanks, a conure, a savannah monitor and maybe even more. Which I know isn’t a MASSIVE collection. But it was too much. Like you said I stopped enjoying it as much and I admit I started putting off snake feedings. Never by weeks at a time but the fact I was abandoning my schedule, even if for a few days because I was feeling exhausted , meant it was time to find better homes . Now I have a dog and a single fish tank. I plan on getting more fish, and maybe a reptile and a jumping spider . But never getting to the point I was at before

I understand the desire to want to give your animals the best, but if they’re all healthy & you’re caring for them properly, then it’s definitely unhealthy to obsess over something bad happening to them, to the point it’s giving you nightmares & keeping you up at night. I am an active follower of a lot of breeders, breeders of animals I would never own, it's a really weird situation, seeing the evolution of people, in the beginning, wanting to give this person the benefit of the doubt to later find out how much they were lied to. The people who defended this person as "innocent until proven guilty" are now getting shamed. It's terrible when you lose part of your reputation and have your trust broken for being fair. It is disgusting on so many levels and so many great people were hurt by these jerks.

I'm not familiar with the situation with Slithers, but thank you for talking about this form of abuse- people that like their animals, but neglect them due to laziness, mental illness, getting in over their heads, etc. Lots of people's idea of abuse is someone kicking a dog, but it's usually this, and reptiles are so commonly neglected. It's not taken seriously enough but it's a huge issue, especially among casual reptile owners. Also, we really have to tone down the hate for people who rehome animals- the guilt and fear of being judged can definitely prevent people from making a decision that's in the animal's best interest.

At my peak, i had a reptile room but i wasnt a breeder, just a very invested hobbyist. A few years ago, i developed a medical issue at the same time as my dog was diagnosed with a terminal illness and my cat started to have some issues because of her age. I realized pretty quickly that i neither had thw time, nor stamina anymore to care for so many. I had to downsize to less than half my previous numbers to keep up, and even that was difficult for a while. Things have improved for me since then, but i don't want that many again. It left me wholly unprepared for back to back personal and medical issues, and it really wasnt fair to my snakes.

It’s videos like these that serve as good reminders. I only have one adult female corn snake but even still sometimes life gets overwhelming. Videos like these help remind me to be more on time with feeding and not having it vary from how many days since feeding, or paying close attention to changing out water. Luckily my corn snake is doing well health wise and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve had the animal since I was 8 years old and I’ve always been looking for ways to improve my care. Now I’ve incorporated a UVB bulb of the right strength and she seems far more alert and active. Ooo and I’ve been target training her, which has been going great. Having a snake is wonderful, but caring for a living thing is serious business.

Many of the things I heard on the other side of the call were just heart breaking and disgusted me, that people could purposely learn so little about their responsibility as a pet steward, not too mention the midnight drop offs of full pillow cases left outside the entrance door on the stoop. Many, overnight in winter, in Pennsylvania. So many frozen iguanas, pythons, and such carelessly left on someone else's door. Terrible.

I like how you're pointing out that a lot of people who neglect or abuse animals started out just like the rest of us, that it's important to keep our eyes on our OWN husbandry to be sure ease doesn't become neglect and that our animals stay healthy and enriched, or pay good help, or rehome them to good keepers if we can't do that. It's not an Us vs Them, its that ALL of us are capable of *at least* getting in over our heads even if we didn't start out intending any harm. And that most good people will self correct.

When I was young I put several lizards in the same large tank because they were in tiny boxes at the pet store. I kidded myself that I was improving their lives. Animal abuse comes in many forms.

Thank you for talking about this. It is absolutely heart-breaking. What makes it even worse, is the owner was convicted of animal abuse before for dog-fighting. After an animal abuse conviction, you should not even be allowed to own any more animals, and you especially shouldn't be able to make money off of breeding them! The law in this country is a joke. But thank you again for bringing it up, it's been a rough few months for us retic keepers in the states, so it's good to see people with bigger channels calling out this bull crap. Much respect to you Adam!

This cycle can happen with one animal. This happened to me, I think. It started by the time she was reaching the end of her natural life cycle, but all the same. I started going, "ugh," when i when to go and tend to her. So, like he said, when you start going like that to yourself, its time to downsize. You dont have to grit through it. You aren't a bad person if you let in and give the animal away. Keeping an animal isnt like keeping a card someone give you. The animal is alive, your obligation or worthiness as a person isn't dependent on how long you keep them. Nobody here wants to hurt animals. Its just... Sometimes the weight of obligation and perceived expectation/honor, clouds one's judgement. Its a different plight to not understand whats happening, or what to do with an animal. It can often lead to the same set of actions. Especially when its combined with someone handing you the animal as a gift. This is not specific what so ever. My dad bought me a rabbit... We just waited for it to die after a while. Its heartbreaking in hindsight.

That thing you said about service people coming giving you an eight-hour window and they show up right when you sit down to film something well in my case it's usually when I run to the bathroom you know you just get in there and there goes the knock at the door OMG it's all the anxiety cuz I feel like I'm not allowed to be more than like 5 ft from my front door when I've got like a window of somebody showing up cuz I'm like I gotta be able to get there and then I'm like oh can I go to the bathroom can I eat something I don't know
