@wow85 Aniak was trained to bring her pup over to the biologists. She was hesitant in the beginning, but through repetition and positive reinforcement she understood that the biologists were there to just take a look at her pup and not cause harm.

I love how Aniak gave her right back when you gave the baby to her to give her a little break from stressing over her baby. It was like "Nah I trust you - take her - more shrimp?"

This was a video they showed to us in class today. The baby pup was born in the Aquarium despite being on birth control. Ooops!!! Aniak offers up her pup for out care. She trust the vets 100% but they try to avoid any stress. As you can see she checks on her pup momentarily to make sure everything is A OK. After the examination, they return her pup. Aniak offers up her pup again. We all busted up laughing for it was like she needed a bit more mommy time. Aniak was never trained to offer her pup. This is a very interesting behavior.

If sea otters are in endangered species why would they be placed on birth control? we need all the sea otter babies possible , so there are more sea otters in the world to increase the cuteness level of the planet

@@onwednesdayswewearpink2761 they are on birth control so they can control which, if any, otters mate and produce offspring. Some might have genetic conditions, not be good mothers, or they might have already mated and they don't want all of their otters being related as that can lead to an increased likelihood of genetic abnormalities. It is also possible that the aquarium was at capacity for sea otters. Too many otters in a habitat can lead to resource aggression.

Oh man, 3:47 Aniak was Done 🤣. I jumped when she looked ready to lunge with those cute little hands. It's such a strange thing, sea otters look so adorable, but they're like a plush toy that can bite your fingers off. But lil Sek! She's so small and sweet with that one dark spikey hair on the top of her head. It looks like she was chewing and battling the other trainers fingers while she was on her back.

I think being in captivity like that, they can sense the people are helping, unlike in the wild she would have not been so likely to give her pup up so willingly

@Anmantaku It's only a week old. With all that extra fluff when they're born they don't really need to know how to swim - they can't sink! Watch the newer video - a week later she was paddling around on her back :)
