Ani DiFranco - You Had Time
Музыка
lyrics:
how can i go home
with nothing to say
i know you're going to look at me that way
and say what did you do out there
and what did you decide
you said you needed time
and you had time
you are a china shop
and i am a bull
you are really good food
and i am full
i guess everything is timing
i guess everything's been said
so i am coming home with an empty head
you'll say did they love you or what
i'll say they love what i do
the only one who really loves me is you
and you'll say girl did you kick some butt
and i'll say i don't really remember
but my fingers are sore
and my voice is too
you'll say it's really good to see you
you'll say i missed you horribly
you'll say let me carry that
give that to me
and you will take the heavy stuff
and you will drive the car
and i'll look out the window and make jokes
about the way things are
how can i go home
with nothing to say
i know you're going to look at me that way
and say what did you do out there
and what did you decide
you said you needed time
and you had time

This woman shaped my whole adulthood. From 18 to 47. I can't thank her enough. She made me strong enough to get through one cheating husband. Filed for divorce the next day. Even named my cat after her. Not this song, but I am not a pretty girl, that's not what I do. But, this song, this makes me cry. Every damn time. So many memoires of listening to this. Makes me miss my best friend horribly.

I love you, friend. Hope you’re doing okay.
I'm 39 now and fuck this brings me back to when my older brother got me into Ani back in 1997. This album and Dilate are absolutely incredible works of art. As a guitarist she is just such a HUGE influence on me. Her playing and her riffs and melodies are bloody brilliant and then her VOICE and lyrics. Ani succeeded because she is just such a complete songwriter and performer.

Dilate is beautiful and my song to my ex loves
I discovered ani about 4 years ago. I’m 29 now. Not too much time has past but I look back and see she’s a timeless great. Although not a commercial success, maybe that’s a blessing. One of those artists that has a time and place in everyone’s life.
I don't know what it is, but I can listen to this song on repeat for 5,231,255 years

I really like the piano here, the offbeat syncopation, which prepares the listener for a failed love story: two people who couldn't quite get it together somehow.
This song is like returning to visit a wound.
This song is so personal I feel like I am listening in on a couples argument that I shouldn’t be privy to. I love songs like this, songs that tell a story. I could imagine this whole scenario in my head… I hope she allowed him to be free and fall in love with someone who had time for him. ❤

I've been listening to Ani for 20 years.. introduced by my first girlfriend. Times were so different then. I was 15 years old and the world was at my feet. Amazing. Ani, thank you for being such a guiding light. This music means so much to me xx
A very beautiful woman introduced me to arni s music cant thank her enough
There was a time when I played music for a living & understood this song better than anyone should. It always hurts to hear it.

I remember the first time I heard this song … I remember thinking it was one of the saddest and truthful songs to point out ACTIONS speaking louder than words😢😢😢 thank YOU ANI…. Love you for being a REAL one with your entire “ not a pretty girl”album❤❤❤ love you all
I love Ani so much. Working out at the gym & crying over her beautiful voice!....Don't look at me!!!!
I still love this after so many years.
This song, to me is about communication and after a very different path, being confused on what life to lead with this new opportunity. The other is always strong and caring and supportive but it’s so hard to commit because of past failures. It surprises ani because she’s been working so hard and is so aggressive but she’s so tired that she finally is trying to put herself out there honestly to the one that sees her
Her voice is a salve for my soul.

I absolutely love this response. I never would have thought that unless I had read it. And yet so true.
.... This song has always been to me the thought of my brother Tim picking me up after I've to the best of my ability lived.. and concluded... what I could
The only song I can ever remember to play on the piano for the last 20 years.
Tori deserved better. For her love had burned brighter than a thousand lit fireflies and depend with lust, forever and more, always remaining ‘hers’. 🥺❤️

This song gets in me so deep. This was my breakup song for my first love. I was the bull 😔 Also, I love Ani for life! 💪
So beautiful, Thank you
Nobody spits it like she does...
I get to this song because of Nick Hornby (31 songs)
She wrote it for the movie lost and delirious. I wish I could find that movie ~

She didn't write it "for" the movie though. This song was written in 1994 and the movie came out in 2001.
❤❤❤❤❤
she had a friend send her this song and it was the most beautiful thing she ever heard her world was ending and after she was raped and destroyed they did it all over to her again and again destroying her until there was very little left to hold onto all these years and years and years sometimes she tried to speak up she called her dr. called the counselors she realized she was talking to stone hearts long ago and so it went on and she knew she was really dead after all they would never stop doing to her what they had been doing to her for years-she had a friend once who sent her this song.

Ani jam! iSong is a F'nk ani difranco jam!
This song upsets me. It made me realise a failing in Ani's song writing. There's a ridiculous amount of the 'he said', 'she said', 'I said', 'you said' stuff. Not in regards to relating a story with characters, that part is good, but in the direct construction of the back and forth of a conversation where she's actually stating the terms as if reading an inelegant book. She puts 7 of them in the space of 10 lines in this song and it really highlighted the technique and now it makes me cringe a little whenever I hear it in every second song she sings. If it wasn't for the complete saturation in this song I probably wouldn't have even noticed it everywhere else. And it doubly sucks cos the music on this one has great atmosphere to match the message. :/

I know and further along, you'll see why she does it. It irritated me to a great extent too, but it'll eventually irk you less as you let it go and explore some of her other works. Could be me though. Considering that I've been severely abused by women my whole life, it's a statistical improbability that she is one of my top 5 favorite musicians. Men who go through what I've been put through usually end up as serial murderers. I've done the opposite and have reconciled her angst so that I know how not to hurt others as well... Pretty accomplishing really, but I just wanted you to know that I understand how you feel... i do...

+spinycrayfish Interesting. I just hear it as part of a pattern. Poets use repetition and patterns like this all the time. Think of Leonard Cohen's "Susanne" and Mike Scott's "Bring 'Em All In".

interesting interpretation. I've met Ani, there's no animosity in her lovely soul... she's an unexpected and sudden sister to me and perhaps it's that I've been in her position, The Bull as it were, that makes this song so familiar and tender. it does hurt. it all hurts though... doesn't it?
