Ani DiFranco - 32 Flavors
Музыка
lyrics:
squint your eyes and look closer
i'm not between you and your ambition
i am a poster girl with no poster
i am thirty-two flavors and then some
and i'm beyond your peripheral vision
so you might want to turn your head
cause someday you're going to get hungry
and eat most of the words you just said
both my parents taught me about good will
and i have done well by their names
just the kindness i've lavished on strangers
is more than i can explain
still there's many who've turned out their porch lights
just so i would think they were not home
and hid in the dark of their windows
till i'd passed and left them alone
and god help you if you are an ugly girl
course too pretty is also your doom
cause everyone harbors a secret hatred
for the prettiest girl in the room
and god help you if you are a phoenix
and you dare to rise up from the ash
a thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
while you are just flying past
i'm not trying to give my life meaning
by demeaning you
and i would like to state for the record
i did everything that i could do
i'm not saying that i'm a saint
i just don't want to live that way
no, i will never be a saint
but i will always say
squint your eyes and look closer
i'm not between you and your ambition
i am a poster girl with no poster
i am thirty-two flavors and then some
and i'm beyond your peripheral vision
so you might want to turn your head
cause someday you might find you're starving
and eating all of the words you said

Still right here in 2024. Ani, your poetry is still and always will be legendary. You are the epitome of “We Can Do It! 💪

Me too
2024 I’m almost 42 and I found her in 1994 I still run to her when I need to remember how bad ass I am
This song helped me to survive one of the most difficult and vulnerable moments in my life. I was 25 then. Now at almost 50, it makes me nostalgic for my youth despite how trying those years were.

I got a text randomly from my mother about listen to the percussion because I am a drummer. 😅
When I was much younger, and sadder and more alone, I would listen to Ani while waiting for the bus, or lying in the dark in my room. And it helped me survive psychically and it helped me cry and rage and celebrate. Much gratitude, hope she knows how many people she's helped - I suspect she does.

Somebody got me hooked on Ani's music the year I went insane. If it wasnt for musicians like Ani Difranco my life would probably look like that bathroom in Trainspotters. Just saying thanks.

Truly underrated song of the 90s that should have been more popular. I love it.

The Alana Davis version did well in the 90's. I bought that CD. I respect Ani for her business savvy but never cared for her as a musician. I never really got it but she did it her way on her own label and played alongside many greats so she's done more than I. She's fought in the arena and won. I'm just a naysayer from the peanut gallery.
This song and album got me through one of the hardest spaces in my life. It was on the CD in my car non-stop and helped me reflect on a major life event.

Peggy Semingson Me too, all of college. Seriously would just belt these songs out in my car to and from classes.... Helped me tremendously. Love her.
the snare drum is just a tiny bit behind the beat. this is genius.
The nostalgia that comes in hearing her is overwhelming❤️🩹✨
I still love these songs over 20 years later
this song is so beautiful. Speaks multitudes.
Ani deserves SO MUCH MORE CREDIT for how many women she has saved with her music, how many girls she has inspired with everything she has accomplished, and how she still leads the way holding a light for the one's still left in the dark. ❤️🖤❤️🖤
excellent songwriting & musicianship. I live for the drum outtro✨

Zomzi Love Me too!! Live the energy was so amazing. 💗
Her words have carried me through a couple real tragedies in my lifetime. God bless you for sharing your pain. ❤ I will not keep any angels waiting.
I never understood why the other version of this (Alana Davis) got so much airplay and this one didn't. This one is just superb, much better than the cover. Her voice is sublime.

Because ... alana fit some corporate equation better. Like. Why did the " Torn " version by Natalie get more attention then the Edna Swap version.? Cause of record industry politics...corporate fuckery and ( in general) chucklefuckery. Good news ... the writer gets most of the monies.

Ani is the only version I knew of until today at the grocery store heard the Alana version but hers is just nothing even close to the original. That’s always the issue people who loved Alana’s probably don’t really know the importance of Queen Ani DiFranco!
@beyondwhatisknown

Ani DiFranco owns her own record company and does all her own marketing and gets 100% of the profits. So, her music won't be advertised through the regular avenues of radio play. That might explain it. Also, the Alana Davis version is a more universally broadly accessible due to certain lyics it leaves out.
this song speaks to me.. only ever wanted to get on with life.. but people just gotta be nasty and cruel towards you. i'm not a saint, we all make mistakes. but i'm capable of being kinder than anyone else i've met.. been through hell, been volatile, been unpredictable all when i was a kid.. you grow up and people can't use that against you so don't use it against yourself.

Ani, thank you for just existing...
I think being misunderstood is a big theme in this song. Most people are pretty polarized and things seem very black and white to them .. and a lot of the times they are. But sometimes with some people; they just aren't.

This song makes so many different emotions clear to me when I am not feeling right.....or when I am too stoned.
I love how this song connects me to myself ❤❤❤❤
Ani has always been and will always be an Iconic! Thanks lady! Your music means as much as it did when I was a teenager. The eclectic sound, and the way you screamed words softly; the way you recognized everyone as best you could...and called us out.
I feel empowered.

You should feel empowered, it's a very good song. Percussion is ridiculous!
This song just came back to me after many years passed since I heard it, wracking my brains for the song name, artist name, or lyrics. I think it was the “poster girl” line plus the name Ani in the end that I recalled. Such a beautiful track, so glad I found it again.
Thank you, Ani, you have helped me through a lot. I am grateful for your presence and contribution to this universe.
This song helped me out in my teenage years. Thank you Ani.

Ani DiFranco has been a go to of mine for years! amazing!!
i just discovered this song and this artist I'm so dam lucky
I just remembered this song. I now wish I had kept up with Ani after first hearing her in grad school in the late 90s.
This song is so beautiful I feel as is my simple words wouldn't do it justice. Love you Ani ❤
5:29 I'm a percussionist and I have NO idea what that sound is, but it's amazing and I'm obsessed with it! 🤩
I love this whole album!
FOUND THIS MUSIC AT BLOOMINGTON ❤️❤️ LOVE THE MOVIEEEE
GREAT loud soundtrack! Thank you! #Love
She's so perfect ♥
This song. Was everything, then. Is everything and more, now
I just needed an Ani fix. She does that to you sometimes.
I love this song. So. Much.
Thank you Ani 💖
A Phoenix Rising Up From the Ash!?!! Most fantabulous!
Love Ani so much!
Still listening in 2024! And have to make a Wake playlist for myself, just in case. Ani and Tori are the only artists on it. ❤
You got on my list Ani!!!
I love that KZread thinks she’s small enough potatoes that there was no commercial telling me how I’d be better if I lost weight, wore their makeup or bought the 2022 lineup of trucks and just transitioned into the next ani song. Love you, Babe. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This song is a love letter to my soul.
Sooo aching beautiful

I've had a crush on Ani since 1990...
Really good artist. Got famous at 18 and made a full album a year later.
When I need to just meditate. This.
What an album. I grew up listening not to this one but to Dilate. Missed this for 15 years. She's one of my favourite guitarists. Really unique. She attacks the shit out of it. She's underappreciated for sure. Most of the best artists of the last 30 years haven't got the attention they should. Seems only in death..
🎼my jam🎶since forever. Lyrically epic🎼
Any Bloomington fans here? :)
Bloomington !
I love the concept of 32 Flavors (of ice cream). It has been a long time since I have thought along these lines. Great rhythm section on this tune.
I just keep on waiting for her to sing that part "I am..." just like from Alana Davis cover

She did do it justice.
Looking at the below comments...let me say as a fella'. I remember seeing her live in 2005 and crying. I think music can absolutely transcend all boundaries. Be them gender/race/politics...I don't care. We all feel. We are all part of the same carousel...round and round it goes. Love everybody and treat everyone well.
Smooth and relaxing
love the drums at the end.
i remember this song by alana davis. it was my favorite song.

Very good music.
Im glad that she had made this song and others. This is one of the many few that I sing along with that enables me to express to the whole community of human nations about WHO I KNOW EXACTLY WHO THE FUCK I SAY AND SPRAY I AM!!!
Well that was beautiful
I have loved her music since High School. Now she is going to perform in a city near me in August.
Love you!!
