I liked him on Chapter 1-4, hell even on Guarma. And An American Pastoral Scene is one my favorites missions in the game. I always felt kind of sorry for Bill. To a point at least. He was a fool, but he was also a proud fool, which is the most dangerous kind. The world (and America, in particular) is filled with proud fools, people too stubborn or just too dense to admit when they're wrong, who'll cling to any lie and to any liar who validates them, who'll give away the last shred of their compassion in exchange for preserving the last phantom shred of their dignity, heedless of the fact that their compassion was real wherst their dignity had long since been spent.

Bill's voice actor did a wonderful job. Never felt this sorry for a character like this.

My facial hair is SUPER Irish I'm only 18 but my hair grows in WAY thicker than it should in certain spots and always forms into those stereotypical (I always loved them) sideburns. I wish i knew more Irish people. Like....IRISH or SEAN levels of Irish. The only full blown Irish guy I know is some super huge 6'4 300 pound guy.

Mitchell Hart If Bill killed Micah here, I wonder how different things would be but if he did just beat the shit out of him here, then yeah, more people would look this Bill. I don’t know why Arthur or anybody in the gang didn’t just kill Micah in chapter 6 and just say he got killed by Pinkterons. Only Dutch would have a problem with it.

He used to make fun of both and order them to work harder, but he was always there when they needed him. I guess that's the way you treat a silly younger brother that you love. I guess if Bill had died like Sean, Arthur probably would have said he was like a younger brother to him, like he did about Sean.

I think Arthur should’ve had a good talk with them at some point like how he did with John on the bridge. Bill just wanted more appreciation and respect from the others. Javier seemed to have missed a lot of things which made him side with Dutch along with how he didn’t want to believe his idol, basically turning out to be a fraud. Bill and Javier eventually left the gang too for whatever reasons and it doesn’t seem like they ever found out that Micah was really the rat. So it makes you wonder if they ever did change their minds about Arthur at least.

if you watch the confrontation scene, javier is physically on dutchs side but hes pointing his gun up, not at arthur or john. javiers actor talks about it at a panel too, that he didnt think javier would outright aim at them bc hes torn about it, unlike everyone else that sided with dutch

That's a detail that pains me... the last thing we ever see of Javier and Bill is when they side with Dutch in the camp standoff, but I think they're _not_ in the posse with Dutch and Micah that follows John and Arthur. Plus, we know they must have had a falling out with Dutch soon after because despite all their loyalty, he's already alone at Mount Hagen, but we never get to know why exactly or how their breakup played out.

Damian Wayne First off, your argument only applies to Dutch. Javier and Bill didn’t go crazy. Dutch did. Javier and Bill blindly followed Dutch out of loyalty. They did what they did in RDR2 because of their blind allegiance to Dutch, not because they “went crazy” due to the end of the Wild West. Bill and Javier shared the same ideals as Dutch, but they didn’t go crazy because of it. It’s been mentioned several times that Dutch lost it and went crazy, but I’ve never heard anyone other than you say Bill and Javier “went crazy”. Secondly, by the time RDR1 happened, Bill Williamson went on his own and started up his own gang where they enjoyed killing and raping people. So your excuse for those actions by Bill and his gang is because of capitalism? FOH with that shit. If anything, Bill became more of who he truly was deep inside once he started up his own gang and didn’t have Dutch for guidance.

Bill was at his lowest point in life being dishonorably discharged from the Army and almost got into a fight with Dutch when they first met until Dutch and Hosea calmed him down and he joined the gang soon after. Javier was an escapee from his own country with his own price on his head, starving and stealing chickens until Dutch found him and took care him and joined Dutch soon after. To be honest, it's not like Arthur was the most decent one out of all of them, let alone Arthur always calling him an idiot for the most part which was true for the most part . Although Bill was stupid, some of his faults were in the game were Arthur's for the most part. The dynamite unable to detonate to the Cornwall train when it was Arthur who attached the dynamite to the plunger and especially when Arthur himself got into trouble by Valentine right off the bat almost thrice, but Arthur just shrugs it off "it's just one of them things". Then Bill proves himself "How come I screw up, Im the camp idiot but when you screw up," Oh its just one of them things" Javier? He wasn't even pointing his gun at the end. He was the most confused at what happened, cause he was on lookout and didn't witness Arthur tell the truth. Eventually, the two lost faith in Dutch not long after Arthur died, and they went on their seperate ways, once again on their lowest point in life with nobody caring to help them.

And when dutch abandoned him and arthur and javier and john and ran off with Micah, he definitely had to feel some sort of betrayal and isolation bc now at this point he was truly alone other than his little gang he conjured up in 1911 at that old fort… Bill really had a tragic story,

@@22lrjayden81 i actually started playing the first red dead just a couple days ago (just got one with mexico), and man it's heart breaking to see where everyone ends up. i remember there's a different conversation at the campfire in rdr2 where bill mentions his father went crazy from drinking too much, and how he hopes he doesn't end up like that - he quite literally has one of his biggest fears come true. even if he isnt a good person, you cant help but feel bad for him - he deserved better than that.

Deathpool_04 I’d tried to make a ranking. The ranks are based on enforcer qualities meaning: Strength, Toughness, Shooting skills, Determination and Intimidation. Top class: Arthur and Charles Second class: John, Javier, Micah(he’s a prick but the bastard can shoot and is intimidating at times), Dutch, probably younger Hosea Third: Sadie (strong but to chaotic to be reliable), Bill, Sean, Lenny Fourth: I’m sorry Kieran but that one goes to you

Bill is a very complicated and sad character. He's kinda dumb and he's an alcoholic, but he's also nice to some gang members. He scolds Micah when he taunts Arthur about his Tuberculosis, he's kind to many gang members at times, but he also gets blinded by loyalty, following Dutch's actions as horrible as they may be. His actor even stated in an interview how Bill is a really sad character.

I think it's mainly because he's a monster at rdr1. I didn't use to like him too, but I've started to realize that he's one of the most interesting characters in some way. I mean, he cared about little Jack and the little dog of the camp, and he was always excusing himself for his mistakes. It's tragic when you compare it with what he became eventually.

No, Micah sometimes tries to make it seem like he can take it, like here or when Lenny calls him a turd or when Arthur gets him in some of the cutscenes, but he holds grudges, he seems quite chill when both sean and lenny die. Even so, there are times when he can't take it, like when John says he is too rotten for the wolves

The way Micah stretches out certain words during conversation is masterful characterization.

It’s pretty clear just how evil Bill is in RDR1. But I think the developers decided to make him more of an actual character in this game instead of just a generic bad guy who does bad things. This could be said about a lot of characters in this game, but I think Bill is the most interesting out of everyone.

Both Bill and Javier lost it after what happened to Dutch, I think. Here was this man who'd taken them in, taken care of them and given them respect when no one else would. He saved them, and been there for them when they were at their lowest points. Which is why they were so fiercely loyal to him, and hated the idea that anyone doubted him. So when the man they held in the highest regard cracked and became a delusional killer, it broke them in a way. Because if the one person they believed in, the one man they thought the most of in the entire world, lost his way - what hope did they have?

RDR1 Bill is just Bill but with low honor ending. I feel like after he realized all that talk about loyalty and family with Dutch and the rest of the gang was nothing more than a phony sham, it probably more than likely broke his morality entirely. It doesn't help that he was relentlessly bullied for being dumb and gay even when he was with his family so it probably gave him this "fuck the world and everyone in it" mentality after the only person he looked up to turned out to be nothing more than a fraud. Which makes his death all the more tragic replaying rdr1 after playing rdr2 :(

Bill may be an ass, but he's not a bad person, same goes for most members of the Van Der Linde Gang, that's why it's so heartbreaking to see him, Javier, and Dutch fall so low. Know What I Mean?

A lot of the information given during missions and interactions at the camp definitely give me the feeling they’re laying the groundwork for yet another prequel set in the prime years of the gang. These vague tidbits and retellings we get about past events are setting the stage for RDR III.

bill is like how arthur is at the start. He is cold but inside he is good

The awkward silences during moments like these make the game all the more lifelike. It's not just details beyond what any other game probably can't accomplish, but also, you can feel like you're actually there, emotionally and mentally.

I love how they developed bill way more than in rdr1

I doubt Micah saved Dutch in a bar fight, Dutch is a veteran gunslinger and has skills unmatched. He takes out the entire braithwaites front guards on his own, often getting his hat blown off in that scene and not even flinching

Bill was a soldier after all, i'm sure he is stronger than Micah physically. But Micah is a psychopathic outlaw who is more ruthless, so he probably would've shot bill before dying to his fists lol

It genuinely hurt seeing the last of them just turn on Arthur and John at the end like that, after Micah killed Grimshaw and everything. He and Dutch became despicable men, and I feel like there should've at least been some kind of hesitation from Bill and Javier to just switch to trying to kill you, and the fact Dutch didn't even blink at Grimshaw's murder- that was the defining moment that made me (and I'm sure a lot of people) realize that he wasn't ever a man to be pitied, or helped, or followed, wasn't the messiah leading the group to safety, but a snake poisoning their minds and actions every step of the way... all for more goddamn money.

I feel like bill would’ve ended up siding with Arthur at the end He just needed guidance, and have people treat him better

Started a playthrough of Red Dead 1 when I was rather late into RDR2. I had played a bit of RDR1 in the past and never thought I’d be able to sympathize with Bill. But at the beginning of RDR1 when you see him talk about how everyone just saw him as a drunken idiot, it’s pretty sad when you see in RDR2 that that’s often pretty true. He’s the butt of so many of his friends jokes. With that and his backstory here, I can see why he was blinded by loyalty to Dutch.

Bill and Javier must've hated themselves for years before rdr1 as they thought about how much they hated Micah, but still allowed themselves to follow Dutch after Micah had lured him into his lies.

Bill seems like one of those people that _tries_ to be nice to people he likes but doesn't really know how be anything beyond a bully despite his efforts.

It's sad. Bill most likely went with Dutch because he's so uneducated and impressionable and traumatised. Dutch's almost Mansonesque persona made Bill believe that he was the only person who could give his life meaning. That's the lie that Bill believes, that Dutch is the only person who can give him meaning beyond being a belligerent drunk.

Micah would have no reason to save Dutch; a random guy in a bar pedaling what could have been fools gold for all he knows. ...No no, I smell a rat here.

His loyalty ended up BEING his main fault

Micah was the only one to see what Dutch was from the start. He never believed any of Dutch’s “savior” facade, but he was more than willing to take advantage of what Dutch really was and the fact that no one else would see it.

Micah punched Bill not the other way around

gives great insight into his character and why he really sided with Dutch at the end. He feels he owes him his life and makes him feel like he matters. He was willing to look past the flaws and the logic behind Dutch's actions because of this.

I can only imagine the amount of willpower it took Bill not to shoot Micah at 0:10

I do like the fact that bill uses everyone calling him a moron as a emphasis of remembering what Dutch has done.

Bill wasn't evil, he just doesn't know better. The biggest reason as to why him and Javier turned out the way they did was because the gang fell apart and by the time they realized Dutch was crazy, they no longer had a support system to go back to. Hosea and Arthur were dead, Grimshaw was also dead. Lenny and Sean (their brothers-in-arms), also dead. Tilly, Mary Beth, Karen, Pearson, Swanson, and Uncle took off before things got worse. The Marstons will never forgive them for turning against them. I'd lose my mind too if I lost my whole family.
