Angleworm Trail, BWCA with Shug & Wander'nFool PART 1

Ойын-сауық

The Angleworm Trail in the Boundary Waters Wilderness Canoe Area has called me now for quite some time. Got my ol' buddy Wander'nFool out for a casual walk around this "Prom Queen" of trails.
It is a 14 mile loop north of Ely, Minnesota.
You must get a permit to hike on this trail as it is in the BWCA. Wilderness. Quiet. No roads. No power lines.
We did three nights and this trail lends itself to slowing down and stopping a lot to take in the Glory. On a three night trip out daily miles were short as it is only 14 miles. We took time to truly enjoy the BWCA. Even got in some day naps in the hammock. Long days up there and we got lucky with very little mosquito and blackflies. Cool days and cooler nights.
Whooooooooooo Buddy))))))

Wow Shug, you went back into time. On those fuel tanks. That cylindrical piece that you thought was a lamp, I recall as a kid, may have been the actual pump. Growing up, there was a grocery store in the neighborhood that had a gas pump that had a cylindrical glass container at the top. There were markings 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 gallons on the glass. The attendant would pump gas up to the mark that you wished to pay for and let gravity then feed it through the hose into your gas tank. What a treat!

I think I mentioned that I was lucky to be on the Youth Conservation Corps crew that made a lot of that trail. The summer of 1980. We worked from the first campsite and made it all the way around Home Lake from scratch in a ten day outing. I have been back. It's a place of very good memories for sure. I remember a few HUGE northern pike. It's a little bit of home to watch this. Thank you.

***** No, not much. There was the portage to the lake and another crew had begun making progress down the East side of the lake. There is a campsite with a small rock island as I recall. We stayed there ten days and used stashed forest service canoes to get to work faster in the morning. A LOT of blueberries. As I recall, We all, eight young whippersnappers shat black as the bears do. Antioxidants! I carried a 17 foot Grummen Standard aluminum canoe to the road out that 640 rod (2 mile!) portage in one single carry. I liked it there. Would have happily stayed longer. The lantern you showed in this video is a gas pump from the early days of automobiles . It would stand up tall and have a glass globe much like a lantern. The operator would pump the gasoline from the tank into the globe area. The glass would have graduations on it so one could tell how many gallons of gas was in the glass . When you reached the desired amount the operator would squeeze the nozzle handle and the gas would flow out of the glass globe into the tank of whatever you were filling.

The pit latrines at BWCA can get pretty stinky, and can attract a lot of flies. I was there with my family a decade ago and my mom took some ashes from the fire and sprinkled all over the latrine. Doing that instantly ceased the smell and the flies disappeared.

A beautiful area and glorious weather for sure. I don't really understand the requirement for a permit just to go hiking; such a concept is alien where I live but it also seems very 'un-American'. Equally contrarily, where I live there is a general prohibition against open fires during the Summer but it seems permissible in your hiking areas. It's always a joy to watch your videos Sean, but be warned. Today I am headed out for my first ever hang and IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT! You had better wish me happy trails and sweet dreams because if it all turns out pear-shaped you will be hearing from my legal team.

***** I am now a pretender to the crown of the King of Lollygag. First night was a bit of a struggle finding out how to keep my Hammock Gear 40° under-quilt snug underneath me, but after a flash of inspiration I used S-biners to gather the quilt shock cords above my hammock and it worked a treat. I hardly ever take naps and especially not when tramping around in the great outdoors but found the temptation hard to resist after cracking the code. No sore spots, no stiffness, no suffering at all. I am not yet a master of the hang and wouldn't fancy the idea of attempting to brew the turbo-turd elixir from my cot but could perhaps manage a Pop-Tart. I'm certainly not ready for Spam singles with no medic at hand. Huzzah, my good fellow!
