Anglesey 2021 Vlog 12 - Cemlyn Bay, Fixing The Little Red Camper

In this episode we arrive at Cemlyn Bay to inspect the damage to the van.
It’s then a 32 mile trip to Bangor in search of a Screwfix store. But can he fix it?
Whilst in Bangor we take the opportunity to do some laundry before deciding what to do next.

It occurred to me after watching you use ramps, have you not a car jack, which may have gotten your vehicle higher and yourself better access? 🤔 I’m verily impressed at your repair. 👍👍 Cable ties are lifesavers 😉

We do carry a car jack and it probably would’ve got the vehicle higher but I would never trust a jack when looking underneath the vehicle. Probably would have to mind if that was the only option. 👍

I’m confident your cable tie fix will last for years so I wouldn’t be worried about it for the rest of your trip. Another little tip is if you don’t have cable ties that are long enough for the job they can be connected together (as many as you want) to achieve the desired length. 👍🏻

I had a similar problem about three years ago on a really wet weekend coming back from Hereford. It was all down to a flooded road that had a bit of a hidden dip and deformed and partially ripped off a shielding section by the exhaust system. I had to call the RAC as there isn't any way I can get under a vehicle in my state of health. Funnily enough it's a Nissan too but a Juke so a little more clearance than a standard car. The patrolman pushed and pulled at the offending component and secured it with a couple of big union clips. As you say, it's all pretty you can do in the middle of nowhere in particular and it was a Sunday evening with just about everywhere closed. It all took so long that when we finally got to Gloucester I headed straight for KFC for tea. No way I was cooking at home after all that nonsense and worry. The worry was that it made such a noise dragging and rattling other exhaust that I thought the exhaust system was hanging off. That would have been big bucks. 🤔🙄 Glad you got it sorted and continued your Anglesey leg. 👍

The RAC membership proved a wise move that day. At the moment we are relying on the free Nissan break down cover. Glad I didn’t need to use it though as they would probably just towed me to the nearest Nissan dealership. 👍

The cheap plastic item is a splash guard standard on most Nissan's it is basically there to prevent water from minor puddles getting into the engine, until recently they used to be made of steel and able to withstand minor knocks looking at the video the only option is replace the whole part as the hole for the bolt is completely destroyed. As someone else said carry duck tape and various sizes of cable ties one thing that worried me a little was even though your ramps are shallow you did not have a set of wheel chocks to put behind the rear wheels Amazon do a small set that would do your van nicely otherwise carol might be checking your life insurance

That sounds an expensive event. Did you manage to limp home or did it need a tow? I was aware the watch could be used but had forgotten that ages ago. It would have been very useful that day and I would have been able to use the front facing lens. The thing that annoys me about Apple is the standard camera that is the quickest to operate still doesn’t support 25 frames per second which is the UK standard for avoiding flickering lights. I have to use the Filmic Pro app but Apple don’t allow you to set that as the main camera app. It’s almost like Apple just want to suck money out of us and not meet customer needs. Your comment has me thinking though if my watch works with Filmic Pro. I wouldn’t be surprised if it now does 👍

Hi Michael Davies I am aware of the proposed legislation that could impact wild camping and I have signed the petition against that aspect. The big word here though is COULD. The government have an 80 seat majority so its likely that we will all get to see what actually happens if it becomes law. If it’s the police that will be enforcing it then I am pretty sure people will be warned to move on first. Anyone who refuses will find harsher methods follow for repeated refusal. If it’s private companies enforcing it then all bets are off as they are only interested in money. We will continue to wild camp and adapt accordingly. We will never argue with the police or any landowner though as that can only provide grounds for using the harsher powers that might be available. Let’s not forget the Conservatives cut 20,000 police and at the moment they are rushed off their feet. Wild camping will not be high on their priority list at the moment. Time will tell what happens. Today I don’t think this is aimed at the one nighters. This has groups and long stays in their sights and people who cause a nuisance.
