    Josh Foster is one of my favorite instructors on KZread. His knowledge is superb and his understanding is excellent. The one thing he might have mentioned in this video is that the pressure is largely applied passively by the direction change of the arc, which exerts centrifugal/centripetal forces combined with momentum, pull you toward the outside of the turn which you can then edge/balance against. Then, controlling how much pressure is a matter of flexion/extension of the legs. Overall an excellent video.

    Thank you so much Josh. You are one hell of a ski instructor. I'm a humble level 2 and it makes SO much sense when you show the toppling and early edge grip. Awesome, thank you!

    Always wanted to ski in Canada. Is the snow different than in the European alps? Do you start the season with artificial snow as a base foundation in the piste?

  • @Spuntios

    @Spuntios

    +ventende Depends where you ski in North America. Generally the East Coast has less/worse snow, while the Rockies and surrounding ranges do very well in terms of snow. The closer you go to the ocean, the wetter the snow becomes. Artificial snow is almost never used as a base foundation, though some resorts use it on highly used cat tracks to keep the cover.

    The Okanagan where Big White is has almost no snow making. The only artificial snow issue in the terrain park for building freestyle features. The snow there is significantly better and more consistent than Europe... and I say this as a British person that grew up skiing Europe, and still love skiing Europe, but I have worked for 15 years at Big White with Josh, and the snow is just incredible

    @@Spuntios Mont Tremblant in Quebec has very good snow. I think I bheneral the reason for the more ideal conditions on the West is definitely their mountains, while the Rast does have mountains, the Appalachian range is full of mountains that are more rounded and somewhat shorter, caused by thousands/millions of years of shifting, while the Rockies are a newer formed mountain range.

    If you have to ask, he didn't Teach You! Read my comment. 0:18 The ignorance starts right here. Nothing he says means or teaches anything. He is Just talking to fill a video. 1:00 NO! You skis won't even leave the travers unless you get off your downhill foot and get on your uphill foot. Then, YOU don't Apply the edge!!! When you get off your downhill foot, you are no longer balanced and you start to fall down the hill. THAT, is what makes your uphill foot roll over onto the inside edge/arch and the ski turns as designed. All You do is balance on that arch. 1:12 Look at where he tells you to balance on the arch. I wonder how he expects your skis to get to this point without the ski making the turn. Force it? 1:18 He can ski as good as all the other so called "Instructors" on KZread but he has absolutely No Idea how to teach you how to make it happen. He has No Clue! 1:33 At this point he is getting off his right foot and making his upper body fall down the hill. He just isn't telling You that because he isn't aware of it. He describes what things Look Like and Feel Like and That Is IT! That is NOT teaching. 1:45 This is where he is making his upper body stop traversing and start heading down the hill. That is why you see his skis flatten out and then roll over. 1:52 Did you just see his downhill foot come off the ground? Didn't he Just tell you to do it at the end of the turn? 2:06 Notice him leaning into the hill and then watch his upper body head to the left and back into the fall line as his skis continue across the hill. That is what makes the skis roll over. That Inner Weirdness means Nothing. Just a cute term to keep you hooked. 2:30 He is contradicting himself and what he say teaches nothing let alone make any sense. Don't let his voice fool you into believing he knows what he is doing.

    When you do Slalom turns, you keep your upper body facing down the hill. In GS turns, you allow your upper body to follow the skis across the hill but you keep it facing and leaning mostly down the hill as if there was a Bungee Cord attached to your chest and at the bottom of the hill. When you want to start the next turn, you Have to allow that cord to pull you down the hill so when you get off your down hill foot, you fall down the hill and your uphill foot rolls over onto the arch and the ski turns.

    @@JB91710 the problem seems quite clear from reading your comments. The fact you're asking about turning the skis makes it clear that this lesson is at a level that is too advanced. Apply the edge high in the arc of the turn, feeling the outside ski at the second part, and finally shortening the inside leg in the final part of the arc are all advanced techniques. He delivers the same consistent message and it is a message that has been perpetuated for decades and is very much a foundation of advanced skiing. It sounds like you're very angry and frustrated with the higher level videos so I suggest winding back a bit and watching videos that explain about pivoting, turning, skidding etc. To build a foundation of what to feel when turning. Then after months of practice come back to this video for taking your skiing to the next level and getting more edge grip higher in the arc of the turn. I'm not going to reply to every single one of your comments about how this instructor is "wrong." Just take some intermediate lessons and revisit this when you're ready.

    @@Slooties You are making this SOOOOOOOOOOO EASY for me! All you did is recite words that someone TOLD YOU that have no meaning. The true mark of a follower instead of a thinker. "The fact you're asking about turning the skis makes it clear that this lesson is at a level that is too advanced" What you don't get is THAT I ask when all you guys do is Follow. "Apply the edge high in the arc of the turn," HOW????????????? What do I do with my upper body and how and when do I change my weight and WHY will the skis turn because of that? Which edge? There are four to chose from! "feeling the outside ski at the second part" I can reach down to FEEL my ski! What do YOU mean by FEEL my ski? What will feeling my ski do to allow the ski to turn? "and finally shortening the inside leg in the final part of the arc are all advanced techniques." Guess what? You get OFF/shorten your downhill and future inside leg at the the very START of the turn, not at the end. That's of course if "Shortening the leg" is what you mean because YOU weren't clear on that point. Getting off the downhill foot is the REASON the uphill ski will make the turn! Tell me WHY that will happen. "He delivers the same consistent message and it is a message that has been perpetuated for decades and is very much a foundation of advanced skiing." So if someone spouts a line of Bullshit long enough it becomes Fact? Who says it's fact? How come after 51 years of teaching and being an Outside The Box THINKER all my life, I can't see ANY teaching in what he says? NONE AT ALL! How come you aren't Proving I'm wrong? "It sounds like you're very angry and frustrated" That comes from listening to ignorant people spout their bullshit that makes No Sense at all and watching the same types of people FOLLOW them without asking one question. Two Dimensional Reactors and not Three Dimensional Thinkers. Al you do is Mimic what you see him do. That's It. You Obviously have no clue how to make a ski turn by your Copying what he and all the other YT "Instructors" say. "with the higher level videos' Maybe from Your perspective but your perspective can't tell me how to position my upper body and how and when to change my weight and why the ski will turn. Tell me what part gravity and momentum play in turning. How long have You been FOLLOWING HIM? "I suggest winding back a bit and watching videos that explain about pivoting, turning, skidding etc." I know Everything about skiing. Why don't you tell me all about pivoting, turning, skidding? After all, you love the best teacher on KZread so you must know how to make each one of those things happen and what roll they play in turning and when they should be used. Do you realize that you are even incapable of asking me questions about skiing? It's because HE hasn't taught you how to Think about skiing. You have no understanding of skiing. If you did you could ask. "To build a foundation of what to feel when turning." Instead of just bullshitting me like he does to you, explain to me what is the Foundation that people need to understand before they advance to a higher level. Then tell me how to achieve that foundation. Come on! He taught you that right? "getting more edge grip higher in the arc of the turn." How exactly do I do that? You forgot to tell me that. You have obviously achieved that otherwise you wouldn't be telling me I have to achieve that before I will understand skiing. "I'm not going to reply to every single one of your comments about how this instructor is "wrong." That's because you CAN'T! You were supposed to tell me where, I'm wrong. You obviously thing He walks on water. That's what Non Thinking Followers do. "Just take some intermediate lessons and revisit this when you're ready." After 55 years of skiing and 51 years of teaching and after developing my own teaching method since 1972 that is easy to understand and remember, I don't think I have to take any intermediate lessons to know that Foster is a Fraud and people follow him ONLY because he makes nice videos and is a good presenter/bullshit artist. @@JB91710 For a man in his 50s you have the temperament of a child. I have never seen such aggression and condescension from someone in my entire life. You don't know a thing about me, so to constantly state or insinuate that you are some "Three Dimensional Thinker", and everyone else in the industry are spouting rubbish or are "Two Dimensional Reactors," is staggeringly narcissistic and vain. This video is advanced, it is for an INFORMED audience. If a student attends a University Mathematics lecture, does the lecturer teach them what Multiplication and Division mean? Of course not. This video is for advanced skiers who understand the fundamentals and biomechanics of skiing; how to engage the edges, what pivoting means, what edge angle means, what the outside ski means etc. So saying absurd and pedantic statements like, "Which edge? There are four to chose from!" just makes you look like a complete idiot because anyone who is advanced understands their edges. Stop coming onto videos of skiers on KZread who are providing a free service for all levels and moaning and complaining like a crybaby. If everyone but you is so fucking stupid and knows nothing about teaching and skiing then it should be a piece of cake for you to grab all of the marketshare and take over the industry with your own methods. I won't be holding my breath though because having gone onto your Patreon page and read the utter gibberish and having seen your thumbnail picture, I don't think skiers like Josh Foster will be getting scared any time soon. Maybe lend your incredible mind to fields like Medicine or Technology, where you can make a real difference. Why are you wasting your staggering brain on skiing? Go and be brilliant leader elsewhere and leave the skiing for people like Josh Foster. P.S. the video has 273 likes and 6 dislikes, seems to me that most people enjoy this content and are deriving value from it. Enjoy your day and good luck with your Patreon page. I bet you will be getting inundated with people wanting to ski with a condescending, misinformed, psychopath.
