angle of elevation and depression word problem - trigonometry

In this video, I go through an angle of elevation and depression word problem.
From the foot of a building, I have to look upwards at an angle of 22 degrees to see the top of a tree. From the top of a 150 ft building, I have to look down at an angle of depression of 50 degrees to look at the top of the tree. To the nearest thousandth of a foot, how tall is the tree, and how far is the building from the tree?
I solve this problem using the basic trig functions (sin, cos, tan), along with geometry concepts such as properties of rectangles and alternate interior angles.

I usually just google the topic with the phrase pdf next to it and find a worksheet. Also, if you can find a trigonometry textbook online, that may be your best bet!

Can I not use the law of sines? Find all remaining angles, That gives me all the diagonals. Once I have the diagonals of the non right triangle, I can then break the triangle into 2 right triangles as pictured. Tan and cos will give me the remaining lengths. If I am wrong may someone explain. i find that way mentally quicker, unlike the back and forth algebra.

I always encourage my students to give it a go and see what happens! One rule of my class is that if you find an easier way to do something, you have to share it with the rest of us. So, thanks for sharing! I will try your method out!

@@vinteachesmath my math class is timed. I try to do most of the information mentally to save time. I find the back and forth, get lost due to trying to rush. on the right hand side of the drawing, you have all angles adding to 180. 40, 50, 22, 68. sin72/150= sin40/lower hypotnuse. That leads to ans(sin22). I just dont know the "rules" very well. Knowing when and where to use which formulas makes my brain cells feel like static. Thank you for all you help.
