Everything about Angkor is so amazing. This GIANT well planned city _complex_ with controlled waterways was thriving at the same times Europe was still struggling to get itself out of the dark ages. When London had less than 20,000 people living in it, Angkor had 700,000 or more. At one point it was the largest city in the world. And they way it was built with moving pre-cut blocks and then carving them once in place was a simple yet ingenious move. The building of Angkor is on par or greater than that of Rome.

Angkor Wat is amazing, but they're using the term "city" rather loosely here. What they're really talking about it a series of settlements and infrastructure- a region, not just one discrete city. They're referring to an area that covers over 500 square miles. That's a huge area that would not be identified as a single city in the pre-industrial area. At its peak, the ancient city of Rome had a population of 1.5-2 million people in an area of around 5 square miles. Constantinople in the 12th Century had around 500,000 people in an area of about 4 square miles. The "Angkor Thom," which is the core area of Ankgor Wat that would be identified as a discrete city by the historic inhabitants, had a population of around 150,000 people in 4 square miles.

@Father of Peacefull community You could do some proper research yourself. Hinduism isn't and never was one religion. It's unifying elements come from the 1st millennium BCE. The religion of the oldest South Asian civilisations is completely unknown; at the same time, both the Zoroastrians and Jews practiced early versions of their faith. Don't listen to Hindu nationalists. They are more interested in politics than the truth. If you are Hindu, you can be proud of a great and ancient tradition, but the evidence that it's the world's oldest religion is not great.

Not just hinduism, many other ancient architecture still stand strong today. It is not as if people today don't have the knowledge to make structures to last almost forever, they just don't want it to be. Ancient architecture relied too much upon rocks. Making structures out of rocks would be very costly. Earlier there used to be kings and the labour used to be very cheap. Many people used to die making these structures. If someone makes such structures today and labours would die then there will be a court case and definitely a lifetime prison to the builder. Moreover there are more than a billion people in India alone, if every one of these people's house was to be made out of rocks then there would have been a lot of weathering and destruction of forests and ecosystems. It is easy to criticize modern engineers to not make modern buildings to last forever but they don't realise that there is no need for long lasting buildings.

It was built by Khmers though. The civilization that built Angkor Wat called itself "Sruk Khmer" in its own 11th century inscriptions, which means "Khmer country" in the Old Khmer language. Old Khmer is part of the Austroasiatic language family, not Dravidian like Tamil.

I was there 2 weeks ago and noticed the alphabets from 5-6 Century Khmer were very similar to Kannada script from the south of India. There is a display at the Angkor museum check it out. The a , aa , ka , kha are all very similar. Agree the temple was built by Khmer as the designs do not bear resemblance instead have their own style. Scenes of epics on the walls of Angkor were stunning. Both shiva and Vishnu were worshipped and then Buddha who is also believed to be one of Vishnu’s avatars.
One of the many marvels of Classical Hindu architecture

I love how i get inspired by this complex well thought structured, not to mention they were built centuries ago with no technologies. On top of that, those heavy sizes rocks are not easy to moved. I am so grateful to learn and see these. It really give me the inspiration that ive been looking for.

I like fools like you who says "no technology", you fool, anything is considered tech, a hammer is considered tech, as idea to build something is considered tech depending on its engineering build. I am glad you aren't an engineer because the main concepts of tech is that.
Its sometimes so crazy to me that we cant do some things people did in the past, like carve the stones perfectly like the people who build these temples... That amazes me!

It's probably possible, but they used 300 thousand people to build that, we simply don't want to use that much men power to rebuild it. One might be able to make a couple of those blocks but it's just difficult to do it on a very limited budget on a scale like this.

Angkor Wat, located in the heart of Cambodia, has recently earned the prestigious title of the 8th wonder of the world, surpassing Italy’s Pompeii.
Angkor is undoubtedly the greatest civilization world has ever seen.. massive buildings, temples, canals, farmlands all give Angkor an unmatched place in history. It's really amazing how they chisselled such masterpieces on stone. All the monuments here are much beautiful than those in Egypt or the western world. But I think tourism could be slowly destroying what is left, the spirit of Cambodians to preserve their culture and history is really appreciable. Let us hope that Angkor shall rise again in its full glory
