Fury on streets as Georgia approves controversial law
Protests have broken out after Georgia's parliament approved the divisive "foreign agents" bill.
The legislation is seen by some as threatening press and civic freedoms and there are concerns it's modelled on laws used by President Vladimir Putin in neighbouring Russia.

Would the Dream party be forced to register as a Foreign Agent? If so, then it's a fair law.
2024 is turning out to be a pretty wild episode of south park
Any foreign issue renders me sat waiting for the two interfering letters, US.

Pretty strong barrier that. I dont see anything wrong with the bill, foreign agents have to register their business interests if they want to conduct business activities in Georgia. Makes sense to me.
@UKR636

The proposed law is modeled after a similar one in Russia that the Kremlin has used to increasingly snuff out opposition and civil society. Many Georgians fear their foreign agents bill will be used to the same way it has been in its northern neighbor: to quash dissent and free expression by going after nongovernmental organizations with financial ties overseas.

@@UKR636 Well the bill will show who had funded the protests. The US has similar laws and the EU commission want to implement similar laws also!
Under the bill - which passed its third and final reading with 84 votes against 30 on Tuesday - NGOs and independent media that receive more than 20% of their funding from foreign donors would have to register as organisations "bearing the interests of a foreign power. This legislation has been controversial, with some arguing for transparency and others fearing suppression. Here's a breakdown of the key points: Registration Requirement: NGOs and independent media outlets relying on more than 20% foreign funding must register as organizations "bearing the interests of a foreign power." Government Oversight: The Justice Ministry would oversee these registered organizations. Transparency vs. Suppression: Supporters claim the law increases transparency about foreign influence. Critics fear it will be used to stifle dissent and independent media, similar to a law in Russia. There have been protests against the bill, and the Georgian president has even vowed to veto it. However, the current system is parliamentary, making the President's veto less impactful.

What about the Foreign Agents Registration Act (22 U.S.C. § 611) (FARA)? Is it undemocratic as well? "Quod licet Iovi, non licet bovi"?
Thought this was Georgia, USA, for until about 15 seconds in.
It won’t end up going through, it can’t. Just look at the people protesting & the fighting in the parliament 🤷🏻♂️
In 1938, Congress enacted the Foreign Agents Registration Act ("FARA"), requiring “foreign agents” to register with the Attorney General. As amended over the years, it applies broadly to anyone who acts on behalf of a “foreign principal” to, among other things, influence U.S. policy
