Fury on streets as Georgia approves controversial law

Protests have broken out after Georgia's parliament approved the divisive "foreign agents" bill.
The legislation is seen by some as threatening press and civic freedoms and there are concerns it's modelled on laws used by President Vladimir Putin in neighbouring Russia.

Pretty strong barrier that. I dont see anything wrong with the bill, foreign agents have to register their business interests if they want to conduct business activities in Georgia. Makes sense to me.

The proposed law is modeled after a similar one in Russia that the Kremlin has used to increasingly snuff out opposition and civil society. Many Georgians fear their foreign agents bill will be used to the same way it has been in its northern neighbor: to quash dissent and free expression by going after nongovernmental organizations with financial ties overseas.

Under the bill - which passed its third and final reading with 84 votes against 30 on Tuesday - NGOs and independent media that receive more than 20% of their funding from foreign donors would have to register as organisations "bearing the interests of a foreign power. This legislation has been controversial, with some arguing for transparency and others fearing suppression. Here's a breakdown of the key points: Registration Requirement: NGOs and independent media outlets relying on more than 20% foreign funding must register as organizations "bearing the interests of a foreign power." Government Oversight: The Justice Ministry would oversee these registered organizations. Transparency vs. Suppression: Supporters claim the law increases transparency about foreign influence. Critics fear it will be used to stifle dissent and independent media, similar to a law in Russia. There have been protests against the bill, and the Georgian president has even vowed to veto it. However, the current system is parliamentary, making the President's veto less impactful.
