The difference between Angelina's version and Beyonce's is the pain and hurt the storyteller is feeling comes across. Angelina's storytelling makes you want to punch "the boy" for hurting her. There are way too many artists with tremendous talent that go nowhere because they don't get those opportunities. From what I’ve read, after BC Jean and Gad completed the song, they recorded a demo. The song was to be on BC Jean’s debut album. The record company rejected the song and after Jean’s record deal fell through, Gad marketed the song, (as well as others they had written) to established artists. Beyoncé liked If I Were a Boy and recorded it with Gad co-producing. Supposedly BC Jean was not initially happy when she heard that Beyoncé was recording it because she did not originally intend on writing songs for other people because she considered herself an artist. In the end it all worked out.

On the piano is Toby Gad who cowrote this song,,,,AND is working with Angelina on new album and other songs.

No one can unapologetically bring so much emotion to a song like Angelina... She raises the bar so high, so easily! Her interpretation of songs is organic... "Magic" yes, but she put "a spell on us", what seems like a long time ago... She's excelled to a level others may chase, and never achieve.. She´s the best contemporary female singer in the world.

When Beyoncé sings the song, you hear her when Angelina sings the song you feel the lyrics, you feel her, you feel all of it straight to your soul. Although Beyoncé has a beautiful voice it’s just a voice. It doesn’t tell a story. It doesn’t grab you it doesn’t make you feel the way that Angelina makes you feel.

We know Angelina is a master storyteller. The emotion she sings lyrics with is special to her. On top of that is her one of a kind tone and texture that sets her voice apart from every other singer. Chills every time I hear this, and that final "if I were a boy" puts an emotional lump in my throat. I hope this is the song that finally puts Angelina on the air so the whole world can be moved the way her followers and fans are.

This song and the way Angelina performed it reminds me of her performance on The Champions where she sung "Someone You Loved" . She was just as awesome at 13 there as she is here at 18, Angelina is just a timeless talent at any age.

In this video the pianist is Toby Gad .. the Piano Diaries are a celebration of his hit songs. He invited Angelina to England with him to perform .. this is the fourth version I have heard. I am not sure if it is really a cover when a singer is standing next to the composer as they jam to create a different version of the song.

The same year (2008) it was performed by Beyoncé who did make it famous. And now Toby Gad invited Angelina to sing it as part of his new project "Piano Diaries". But there is more: Toby and Angelina have made another video with different instruments of this song produce and filmed by Toby Gad in the streets of London (UK). I think her vocals are the same in both videos, but the instrumental support makes the songs different. And I discovered: Angelina is one of the finest vocalists, but playback singing is not something she is very experienced in (no big deal: it's the music that counts). I had mixed feelings about this song when we were being fed all those teasers leading up to this release, but I kept listening and doing my usual with Angelina, falling in love with her amazing interpretation, and now this string/piano studio version in church venue, and I just get lost in her beautiful voice--a tremendous performance. I'm really expecting this to be a magical year for our barefoot princess. Angelina is a story-teller supreme, gifted with a voice like none other. I don't know your “princess Ariani” but one thing's for sure, I will never make this kind of “but without offense” comment under any singer's video. I have far too much respect for the courage it takes to sing with such vulnerability and soulfulness, as Angelina does here, to use that kind of cheap trick to push another singer. If your motivation was to promote "princess Ariani", it's a failure, just a put-off.
