I would guess that Mery handed the phone off to Mom so she could film her “approbation” to Angelina. That thumbs up gesture shows up on many of her early videos… those with Grandma behind the lens. I am of the opinion that many of these thumbs up moments are in response to her Grandma giving Angelina encouragement with a similar gesture. Angelina has said of her Grandma (who, incidentally introduced Angelina to jazz at around the age of 2 or 3)… she is very “inspiring”, she’s my “best friend”, my “everything.” Angelina’s mom says that Angelina gets her creativity and talent from her Grandma. Mery no doubt, helped Angelina with her wreath upon her head. I’m pretty sure it was created as you said, for her practice sessions, both here in the studio, and for her practice with the entire orchestra. 💚🎶👣

The first single of her new album will be released later this month and the whole album in early autumn. Then she starts touring in the USA and Europe etc. She finishes her high school this summer and Republic Records will start to promote her with their full capacity globally 😁 The whole world will know her soon ❤!!!

WOW that's awesome.

I believe the thumbs was her communicating with her grandma (who was filming) to get feedback. Her grandma has been very important for her both on a personal and professional level. BTW, Angelina was scrolling and reading lyrics from her phone while singing. At the end she said "Det var kjempebra!" which means "That was very good!".

Great reaction she is 11yrs here Billie was Angelina's favourite artist and she said there would be no Angelina without Billie. There is a version on her album Magic released when she was 12yrs. This performance by Angelina is my 2nd favourite vocal by anyone ever the 1st being ' My funny valentine' by Angelina at 16yrs and will only be better when she sings them again. Now of course her voice is even more unique, soulful, rich ,husky, raspy, jazzy, bluesy, breathy, smooth, velvet, powerful , subtle , delicate ,intricate and pretty much anything she want's it to do, for me there has never been another like her so natural, real and honest , so calm and poised even since she was tiny and the joy and love that pours out of this magical , sweet, humble, caring young lady is a beautiful and wonderful thing to experience. She is much loved because she is love.

I'm not certain, but I have the It's Magic album and I believe this is from the session that produced that album. Each of her performances are unique and this version sounds extremely close to that on the album. At the end of the video, you will also note that she is in studio with a full orchestra as she would have been for the album session.

@@michaelsoper3610 About half of the take we are watching her record here was indeed used "as-is" on the album (by which I mean that very little post-processing was done to her vocal, and what was used wasn't chopped up into little bits, as is often done with multiple studio takes, but instead was used in only two unedited segments: one relatively short and one much longer). You can verify this if you can sync up the two recordings sufficiently well (and balance their vastly different volumes). I did that once so _perfectly_ from the beginning of the song that when the two audios suddently snapped into sync I thought that maybe the cell phone video had stopped playing.😁 (It hadn't.)

Angelina is 11 years old in this video - she is in a recording booth and a full orchestra band is in the next room. Angelina's grandmother is in the booth with her shooting the video and that is who Angelina is sending her reactions to.

It is this performance that you can hear on the Magic album. The difference is that on the album there are a professional sound track and not the cellphone, and at the video with the professional sound track, at 3:44 in this video, they took out the little miss and overlaid the video with a commercial for the Magic album.

@@olekristiandahlen603 To be more precise, only about half of this take was used on the album (It's Magic). The first half, before the flubbed line, was not used, nor were two lines in the second half. But the rest of the second half was used as-is on the album. Also, since this isn't really obvious from the video, I'll point out that the band is actually playing "live" in the adjacent room(s). Some of the musicians can be seen when the camera pans around.

How is this possible? Channeling in and out of childhood. Everyday, I listen to Angelina everyday to sooth my soul.

e pluribus u-num With all the gimmicks that are used in what is known as music today it is so refreshing to come across a being that does not need auto tune, lightshows, dancers, outrageous costumes, bands, or orchestras to cover their weaknesses because she has none. AJ can perform a Capella, or with one or two instruments to follow her lead and give you chills with each performance. I have always enjoyed all genres of music, and being 75, I have experienced the best the industry has to offer, from the early 50s, to 2023, but I have never been moved emotionally in the past anywhere close to what Angelina Jordan does from 7 to 17. When I heard Celine Dion perform in a tint in Québec when she was a child, I predicted she would be the next world superstar, and the rest is history. Celine did not sign a record contract until she was in her early 20s. David Foster, who made Celine a star flew to Norway after Angelina wone NGT and tried to sign her, but her family wanted to stay in control of her future. Angelina, at 13, appeared on AGT and getting worldwide recognition signed with the largest record company in the world at age 14, Republic Records. The story is that Monty Lipman, the CEO, and known as the Star Maker, personally signed her even without meeting AJ, he was shown a video of her performance. Angelina Jordan will be the next Super Nova very soon. As for being her biggest fan, e pluribus u-num.

This is one of my favourite Angelina videos, it is so beautiful and truly shows her immense class. I loved the film " Lady Sings the Blues " with Diana Ross playing Billie Holiday, and she is definitely in the same league vocally as the two singers mentioned above !!! Love reaction as well.

She is more than a musical or skilled technical singer. The moment she starts to use her vocal cords to sing a line from a song the switch to the adequate emotion turns on. She can't help it! Angelina said that if it wasn’t for her love of listening to Billie Holiday there would be no Angelina Jordan. It was Angelina’s grandma, Mery’s love of listening to the jazz classics and artists that, from birth, Angelina heard the classics and thus developed a deep love and passion for jazz.

Angelina has said she wouldn't be the singer she is if not for Billie Holiday and this is a perfect illustration of that. when it comes to Angelina singing heartfelt ballads, the 'breathy', 'whisper-like' inflections she brings forth are all pure Billie Holiday, for no one until Angelina has eve been able to capture the true essence of Billie. The hair thing is part of the Norwegian May festival..an old tradition. Great analysis. That Angelina can even come close to capturing Billie Holiday's vocal style let alone nailing it is remarkable. Being able to perform this song in Holiday's style is like defending your PhD. for a scientist. If you can pass that test there isn't much you can't do. The finalised version appeared on her debut album 'It's Magic', which she recorded in 2017 (when she was 11) and released in 2018. Somebody has dubbed the album version onto the rehearsal video you just watched, which would have been cool for you to experience second time around if only you had known, but this is the one I personally like for its rawness.

Well, you hit my special word for the day: "channeling." And, you got there straight away. If you had to reduce all your comments to a single word, channeling would be it. You also avoided a common vocal coach trap of picking apart the anatomy of the singer's vocal track. Sound production matters, of course. But, it has its place. Technically, Billie Holiday was, pretty much, untrained. Yet, she was still beloved. Her lack of technical training led to damage of her instrument. She adapted and continued to performed and was still loved, maybe even more. Between her and Ella, you have the very definition of jazz singer. The emphasis that you put on styling, interpretation, and musicality is very well placed. Technique expands ones tool set, no doubt, and is important for vocal health. In the final analysis it is still all about moving the listener emotionally. You always seem to get Angelina in a way that emphasizes what this girl delivers every time she steps up to a microphone. Well done.

AJ was, I believe, 11 here, a mere(?) preteen. This song appears on her album, It's Magic, available on Amazon and elsewhere. There is also a version of this studio video on KZread with the final mix dubbed on top, like the difference between a rough and cut diamond, both priceless but one is shiny. My take on the thumbs up is AJ saying "nailed that" ... you will see Mery give a thumbs up at the end so it is the two interacting during the recording.

Now you need to watch the finished product. This same video but with the audio from a subsequent studio recording. It is superb... BTW she wears a flower crown in many of her videos it's a custom in Norway.

Angelina has said in interviews that, "without Billie Holiday, there is no Angelina Jordan." Angelina was 11 when she recorded this. The album wasn't released until the next year, so that's how the seeming gap in time happened. This song first appeared for Angelina's round to go to the semi-finals on NGT 2014. She sang it acapella and again destroyed everyone's limits of what an eight year old can do vocally, at least this eight yr.old.
