Angela Lansbury interview (1978)

From Cinema Showcase, a television programme aired on July 26, 1978, when Dame Lansbury was starring in a touring production of Gypsy at Atlanta's Theatre of Stars.

    Thanks for this. Obviously rare. I don't think I've ever heard Angela Lansbury talk so IN DEPTH about Gypsy before.

    I love the Death on the Nile poster. She was such a hoot in that movie.

    Angela was a good actress for sure. Also a warm and interesting person. However I notice that her acting got more hammy from the late 60s onwards. I wonder if this was the influence Broadway had on her? In her early films in the 40s to about The Manchurian Candidate, she was understated and fairly natural, then she went to Broadway in Mame etc and her film and TV performances suddenly got very large. Still, she was great.

    Do you have any examples of this? I've never noticed it but I wonder if she was a bit more hammy for things aimed at children like Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Ms Santa Claus etc

    She leaned toward more character roles later but she was still quite capable of bringing truth and warmth to any role
