Angela Davis: ‘This moment holds possibilities for change we have never before experienced'

One woman intimately involved in the struggle for civil rights in the United States is the activist and academic Angela Davis. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
From a childhood growing up in segregated Alabama - she was with the Black Panthers and the Communist Party - while beginning her career in education.
Her involvement with a politically distorted murder trial sent her into hiding, becoming one of the FBI’s most wanted - she spent 18 months in jail before she was acquitted of all charges.
She returned to teaching - writing a series of seminal books on social justice and equality. Earlier she joined us from Oakland, California.

@Wisdom Child In 1970, guns belonging to Davis were used in an armed takeover of a courtroom in Marin County, California, in which four people were killed. Prosecuted for three capital felonies, including conspiracy to murder, and held in jail for over a year, she was acquitted of all charges in 1972.yes did she get off not because she was innocent ... the law is about what you can prove money gets good lawyers that's why lots of black Americans get locked up... no money plus bad lawyers = jail and by the way The judge and the three black men were killed in the melee so she has blood on her hands and is a former member of the Communist party look it upon on wikia also thinking that feeding the idea of more government plantations with taxes is going to help black Americans is crazy it will only make it worse I would read more thomas Sowell if I was you or Walter Williams black families and black REAl fathers matter they build communities, not the government and black strong communities raise good children and they invest in the local economy .. and that isn't propaganda its human nature proven with hundreds of years of growth of mankind look out your window and see for yourself but take your glasses of hatred off

@@Victor.Spoils Wow. First of all they used the words "more diverse". It seems that you're the one who has trouble seeing nuance, because if poor blacks and poor whites "always" got along, things would be a bit different. Have you never heard of "divide and conquer"? This is what Republicans have done, and successfully. Your last "point" is absolutely ridiculous and I would love to see that backed up with any kind of credible evidence. But there isn't any, because these protests are the result of long-suppressed and righteous anger and frustration.

@@PatrickPoet That's what they said, but they were pointing out how protesting against systemic racism in the UK doesn't make as much sense here since we don't share the same issues to the same extent as there are in the US. Standing in solidarity with America great and I'm all for it, but some of the British response almost seemed like vicarious victimization to me. I'm a person of colour and I couldn't help but cringe when I saw footage of the thuggery in the streets and defacing Churchill's statue. It seems like those are the sorts of actions that only invite more racism rather than fix anything.

I do agree police (per say) should not be called for mental health incidents, idk about weaponless though mentally ill do know how to use weapons too and often that is the exact situation. So you teach police better or you arm and instruct social workers with a weapon of some sort.

They’ve both been on the planet for the same amount of time. Does this not show the inequality in the current capitalist system? How many of them benefitted from the work of the oppressed? Did they have to face the same challenges that a poor black person faces? Were they judged on the colour of their skin, the way their hair looks, the neighbourhood they grew up in, the school they went to, the crimes or crime rates associated to their race?

Maybe you'll join us in the 21st c. when you get up to speed because you obviously haven't even learned what that means. The abolition of slavery sounded crazy to many in the 19th c.

The Spanish republic, especially in Aragon and Catalonia, before and in the Spanish civil war, until the defeat by Franco with the help of Hitler and Mussolini. That was a time were the complete abolition of police and prisons altogether was not a minority stance. Also in the 1917 Russian revolution, prisons were opened and all prisoners liberated. At this time getting rid of the police, prisons, the military and the state altogether were very popular among the russian population. But not in one day, as the uninformed would imagine. Lenin wrote extensively about how to achieve this in his very popular scientific work "State and Revolution " written in 1917, before the October revolution. Had the whites not used their capital and connections to outside capitalist and imperialist forces and risen up against the vast majority of the population, comprised of workers and poor peasants. And had not 14 countries headed their call and invaded the young Soviet Union and the overthrown aristocrats, capitalists and generals, sponsored by their friends in other countries and funded with their bowels, diamonds and gold, put together an army of mercenaries and enemies of the people and the revolution. Maybe then this would all have been achieved a long time ago and become the global normal. If,if,if.. But if the Soviet Union didn't have to put their focus on defending the revolution. If they were given the opportunity to focus on doing the revolution, then we would live in a very different world today. No police, no prisons, no wars, no racism and nearly any crime If we don't active some kind of socialism in the near future ,then we will first sink into barbarism and then vanish from thus planet.

Don’t be So ignorant. His woman has done more for black people and women than you could imagine. Without the likes of. Martin Luther and her and many more in the Civil rights Movement of the 50s and 60s you would still be living segregated lives with no vote for blacks, or any minority in USA. You go and get educated on the troubles of black Americans, and do something good to help your brothers, sisters and cousins. You sound like you have no knowledge of where you came from or where you could be. Knowledge is power.. please go and get some.

What a load of waffle. Sure take equipment away from the police. When criminals with knives come into your house the police will chase them away with a feather duster! The guy that died, very sad, it should not have happened but he wasn’t really a stand up citizen either now was he???
