    I think MLB should honor Angel Hernandez's career with a bobble head night at all stadiums. Not a figurine of Angel but a plastic strike zone that constantly moves when you shake it.

    @@blamtasticful Players consistently voted him worst umpire. We get a few breakdowns with Jomboy, but MLB does its best to hide conversations with umpires from the fans for brand reasons. Remember how tough they were on that one video with Syndergaard, Terry Collins, and Tom Hallion? I remember it being taken down multiple times. With all that being said, you don't see players consistently make as big of scenes as they did with Hernandez, so I imagine there's something else going on behind the scenes that we don't see. Jim Joyce was another umpire that is worse in accuracy on Umpire Scorecards, but he was ranked best umpire by players, and he was man enough to tell Gallaraga that he messed up the call by telling the world that he messed it up. Can you ever imagine Angel Hernandez doing something like that? Even when I played baseball in high school, we had our favorite umps because they'd be straight up and honest with us as players, they wouldn't take us asking where the ball was as an insult, but tell us what we needed to do to make that pitch a strike. We'd have others who would tell you to stop talking or you're getting thrown out. I can imagine those personalities get amplified once you reach that big of a stage.

    The fact that every pitcher knows there is a high chance he steals, that any movement at all will tip the steal, he likely has to stay still or he gets picked off at this point. The fact that he is so fast that he's safe at 3rd going from nearly standing still is impressive. Roberts I think would be correct, but this seems like something his coaches have already pinpointed.

    This may be completely wrong, but when I ran as a sprinter in track one of the things we would practice was being explosive on our starts. This usually involved throwing the arm opposite the push-off leg as far back as possible. Again maybe he just runs weird, but that’s what it looks like.

  • @cg2642

    @cg2642

    In track sprinting you start with your body already in line with the direction of travel. In base stealing your first step has to make a 90 degree turn. I would be interested to hear from someone who studies biomechanics what kind of effect that has and what the arms should be doing in that first step to be most effective. I was also really interested to notice how he said De La Cruz is already standing pretty much upright when he goes. He does lower after takeoff. But in track sprinting you start off low and leaning forward and naturally start being more upright, and I remember baserunning coaches pointing to videos of Ricky Henderson highlighting the same thing. Starting out forward lean and then slowly coming up. Basestealers only have 90 feet to maximize their speed, slow down and stay on the next base. In track the shortest sprint is 55 meters which is 180 feet and you run straight through after having twice as much room to reach top speed. So regardless basestealers will never be able to completely maximize everything sprinters can.

    @@cg2642you’re thinking of a sprinters stance and not applying the concept of sprinting movements. The above person was talking about using the backwards motion of your arms to help with stability and forward movement of the legs. It’s about physically “Pushing off” momentum on your favour. It would be harder for Elly to just turn and start running in the other direction. If you watch him, he almost instantly starting into a run, using other parts of his body to direct his momentum to align with the direction he wants to run. You can see football players and basketball players use theirs arms to help change direction.

    My 2¢ on the mobility mechanics of making a 90° turn and running to a sprint… as a goaltender in hockey we dealt with a lot of biomechanics coaches on figuring out the best and quickest ways to rotate, find our angles, and take up space as quickly and efficiently as possible. In this scenario of running from left to right, trying to obtain maximum power, get to maximum speed asap from a standstill, while also needing rotation, I would suggest a top down approach like in hockey. Head and shoulders leads the way, so upon the decision to steal, head snaps to 3rd, shoulders following. Nexts is the arms in question, it would make the most sense to me that the right arm should make an elbowing movement back towards 2nd base until it’s pointed towards 3rd in a straight line, while also establishing run path, this will begin to tuck the right side of the runner and start to align him with the intended direction of trajectory, while also loading up for an explosive start. The left arm tucks down and is ready for extension once the body is rotated and should be the first arm to shoot forward once the rotation is completed. Next is the hips, hips align to 3rd, once this happens, you’ve created a super explosive stance that’s primed and ready to head in the direction of the next base. Then it becomes a matter of rotating the toes as the trailing leg flexes the calf and extends the toe, pushing all the weight onto the lead leg with the help of the left arm, then your off to the races with an explosive right leg that’s been primed and ready with proper weight transfer, and a body that’s already in position to accept it.

    The Elly De La Cruz analysis is pretty damn interesting. When I was in my peak years of baseball fandom as a kid, the best base stealers were Rickey Henderson, Vince Coleman and Tim Raines. There were two different take-off techniques among them, although I can't remember which had which. Henderson's first step was for his left foot to swing past his right leg, which means he was pushing off his front foot, similar to a track sprinter out of a block. One of the other two guys pushed off from the left foot, making his right foot the first one off the ground. The idea there was that his first stride was much shorter, meaning the second step - and third and fourth... - came that much sooner. This kind of video analysis would have been pretty cool. There were always discussion as to which method was better vs. which was just being done by a faster guy. After all, technique only gets you so far: if you had me run off a starting block and had, say, Bobby Witt run pigeon-toed in a pair of Birkenstocks, Bobby will still beat me to second and have time to crack open a beer before I slide in.

    Davy Roberts comments seem pretty genuine. Couldn't help but think that the "back-handed" narrative originates from Davy Roberts stealing second against the Yanks in bottom of the 9th of game 4 of the 2004 ALCS - which was definitely the turning point of that unreal, perhaps best CS, series. Perhaps JomBoy still holds a grudge? Fun fact: Davy was 38/41 in steal attempts that year.

    Re: Webb, as a Dodgers fan those calls have long infuriated me. 2021 NDLS game 1, he got that call early leading to the Dodgers having to swing at just about everything. I was so terrified going into game 5 that I pulled the tendency data on the ump ahead of it and saw a scary zone on down and away sinkers and sliders to RHB. Luckily he had a good zone that day and it didn't end up being a thing for the 2nd time in the series. That game you pulled was just a rare case where he got the call and didn't do well, I think your thesis holds overall despite that outlier.

    Long-term your thesis about Webb's being helped is correct. It doesn't mean that each game will be better. As a former southpaw collegiate player, I always loved when I could get a call an inch or two off the plate outside to a right-handed hitter. Made the cutter far more effective.

    Elly's arm motion when he takes off is similar to a sprinter as they come out of the blocks. It looks weird on baseball, but that's why he doesnt need a shuffle with a start like that and not even coming out of blocks...

    CB is just as bad as Angel. Bad at managing people and situations, bad zone, bad calls in the field, etc... Now the scrutiny Angel was getting will be turned to him. Maybe we'll see another sudden retirement soon. Honestly, just getting these two singular guys out of the league will make a huge difference to the perception of umpiring. They're fighting for their existence with robo-umps on the horizon so its in the union's best interest to force the worst guys out to raise the performance floor of the whole profession.

    Ump scorecards makes an expected umpire zone for each game. I'd imagine if you took the raw data used to make that you could make a more accurate one over a whole season to get an idea of where each ump's weaknesses are, then match up pitchers accordingly. I tried to look for it on their website but I don't think you can do it on there

    Just looked up elly’s highlights - he definitely dabbed rounding third when homering off Miller, the Brewers hurler. So it’s likely a known tendency, but damn he seems great for the game.

    Webb was probably unable to locate his pitches after he was getting all those free strikes and then got lit up. Location, location, location. I think I remember that game, and Cuzzi was giving Webb all those pitches in the left-handed batters box. I was saying that he should just keep throwing it there if he’s gonna get those calls.

    I 100% get what Roberts meant about Elly. I watched Billy Hamilton play single-A where he stole 100+ bases in like 80 games. I remember having conversations with my friends about how his reads and jumps weren't even that great at the time. He was just so damn fast it didn't really matter

    I wonder if throwing the arms out behind you like that helps accelerate faster? if you're not low and digging in with your feet, throwing mass behind you might help with that initial push off. because he seems to be reaching top speed really fast.

    I learned this technique for stealing third in college. It is definitely not natural but taught. The secondary lead, or shuffles are meant to hide that you’re going. The key is this, you are guessing how many looks to second the pitcher will take. If I decided he was gonna 2 look me but he only looks once I don’t go. If I get the second look, as soon as he turns his head back to the catcher you start your secondary lead and you’re going no matter what. That’s the general idea.

  • @audrastea2297
    @audrastea2297Ай бұрын

    For a guy like Elly you don't look at him and say ohh ya thats a guy who can steal some bases. You say I expect him to try to steal every base every time he is on base, and I think that plays a part in how both he and opposing pitchers approach his leads. That sneaky little shuffle shuffle shuffle to extend your lead does alot less when everyone in the park knows your running and there is no sneaky to be had.

  • @jeb5137
    @jeb5137Ай бұрын

    EllyDLC is a tall guy, and I think that makes it hard for him to do that shuffle since it pushes he center of gravity towards third meaning he can't get back, so that's probably what he doesn't do it. Additionally his hands do that pose because because he's pushing his momentum towards the base as well. I don't know if his stature allows him to do a "normal" steal, I think he may need to do his odd stuff because he's so tall for a fast guy.

    the shuffle is about timing, not sure if jomboy did it intentioanlly or those are just the three but his hop was WAY early, the pitcher was watching and was like... o a free out just cause you timed it bad doesnt mean you cant do it right, which i think is roberts point? if he does it right, he'll be beating throws by entire bodies
